Hi there, this is a study done in 2011 by O Al-Kuran et al which wanted to look at 'The effect of late pregnancy consumption of date fruit on labour and delivery'. Those in the study ate 6 date fruits per day for 4 weeks prior to going into labour. This study only included 114 women. Although the results were good as with most research, part of the conclusion suggested the need for a randomised control trial. A systematic review and meta-analysis in 2020 of 8 further studies also showed that date fruit consumption can significantly reduce the active phase of labor. They also found and also it can significantly improve the bishop score. There is no denying that dates are filled with vitamins and minerals and are also contain a high level of dietary fibre which is super useful toward the end of pregnancy when constipation can become an issue. There is no evidence to suggest that eating dates will bring on or kick start labour but there is potential evidence that that eating dates can help with the softening of the cervix or cervical ripening for labour. So, I guess to round up, each of the studies has been a bit too small to be definitive. If you like eating dates though (& you can add them to smoothies) then why not go for it? Melanie x
What’s your thoughts on using red raspberry leaf tea or supplements to help induce labour? And are the pressure points in your feet also worth stimulating?
Hi there, red raspberry leaf tea is a uterine toner, so not likely to bring on labour any sooner than it would normally. Here is a great article listing pressure points in your feet and ankles: www.pullingdownthemoon.com/acupressure-points-to-induce-labor-from-specialists#:~:text=Bladder%2060%20Point%20(BL60),can%20massage%20for%20several%20minutes. x
