damn adam that was brutal. Good kind of brutal. Its been difficult for me to see the world in terms of poetry, artistry, to have the liberty and freedom to pursue a vision, a world. Far too often my fears bring down art to merely “the industry standard” the “objectively good” and the “employable”. Which are good things to pursue but its also shallow and draining. Imagine forgetting to have fun with art, what a silly thing. Thanks for this little reminder to pursue something a little more truthful and spontaneous. Fear clouds our vision and objectifies us, so thank you for this little bit of straight, courageous clarity
Even though I'm just a hobbyist artist...you words about traditional school system came through and applicable to my situation as well. I was in Canada for my highschool for 3 yrs and then US for my university...(the school in my country is not worth mentioning at this point since they’re just total failure. Didn't learn a thing from them). It really hit home for me. 👏👏👏👏
Bruh I’m so sorry, the US school system is a mess. Too much bureaucracy to serve a the money agenda for the top of the tops. It’s honestly all bull. Shoulda stayed in Canada for school, has problems like the rest of us but it’s probably not as bad as the US school system

Just want to finish it quickly. ...and the teachers....like i thought i was stupid cause i failed some courses. Then I retake them with a different teacher. And I passed with good grades. That got me thinking...ok so I'm not stupid. What happened ?? Like..the way they teach? The way the teacher engaged with the student... ??? I mean...now I look back and I thought...I should have stand up for myself.
Hey Adam, I’m a 17 year old junior in high school, I’ve been drawing since age 12 and studying art since fourteen. Within all the chaos of the last two years combined with a damaging workaholism, I found that I’d worked the joy out of my art through incessant self criticism and overexertion. For a while in 2020 I barely drew, only now have I re-entered the learning process in earnest. It’s coming back, though- and though I’m not yet back to the unbound enthusiasm for drawing I had when I was 14, I feel the drive to create finally returning. I just wanted to say thank you, watching your videos has become an act of self care for me. I may not know where I’ll end up (I’m currently divided between the potential career paths of mathematical physics and concept art), but taking your words in when I’ve been at my lowest has kept me drawing through the times when even picking up my pencil felt like a Herculean feat. For that I’m ever grateful. This 2022 I’m excited to further embrace art back into my life, this time with a less self-destructive mentality.

Wow, I needed to hear this. I am only a hobby artist, but it’s my life. Recently I have been feeling so frustrated by everything I create, putting me in a loop of not wanting to draw but being unable to stop trying, only to delete everything in frustration. Listening to you, I think I’ve become trapped by an idea of beauty in my art that constricts my inner voice and truth. I worry to much about what people think and pleasing them with what I draw instead of remembering that I do this to communicate with others instead of adopting what they say yet again … thank you for sharing your thoughts Adam. That part at the end really got to me. I am a healthcare worker who also draws and facing major burnout and art block. Seeing the works of others and how proficient they are really breaks my will to keep working on my art. Absolutely love this. I went to 6 high schools and have a hard time learning. When it comes to learning art, I have such a fun time. I never graduated, but art has kept me into learning new things each and every single day.
I have watched your videos all year and I love them. You really put your soul out to the world because you want to help and I feel and understand that. I'm not actually a drawing artist, but I am an artist with fabric and everything you talk about can be attatched to nearly any artistic drive! I started listening to your videos while painting a week ago and its so calming and therapeutic, like not being alone in a quiet room just painting and having your thoughts crush in on you, i bet a lot of people feel the same. I have recently started working on my career as an artist, I've held back for years. trying to work a real job and just never been able to hold. my passion has always been art since i was a child. Thank you Adam for these videos and talks! I appreciate them a lot, I’ve been drawing pretty much my whole life but haven’t really got anywhere significant. I’m in my final year for game art at university (UK) and I feel like I’m not good enough to be this far along after many years of drawing. I’ve never really taken it seriously, more so just looking at other artists and going “oh wow, I wish I could do that” like so many others do. I realise I don’t have the patience and I get angry quite a lot but with your videos they allow me to go at my own pace, realise I’ve still got lots of time to practice and get advice and help and make me want to draw again. I still don’t think I should be where I am after so many years of drawing but you make me happy with how far I’ve come and I thank you for that. I hope you enjoy your Christmas and keep these videos throughout 2022 as I’m definitely going to need them once I finish uni and study art full time to get better and better. Great video :) I always believed creating dark or melancholy art is a way to explore a side of yourself that most prefer to hide or mask. And once you manage to convey that side to others (artist or not), it creates a kind of mutual understanding.. not just of art but of those deeper fears and discomfort that we all share, but explored in a playful and safe way. It's hard to put your finger on.. but there's a reason many people are drawn to it. Happy Holidays :)

I remember Bobby Chiu from the late 2000's, when I lived in Toronto. He ran something called Subway Sketches every Sunday, a group would meet on the subway every week at Union station to draw the unwitting bystanders. Back then I had no clue who he was, I'd maybe heard about this gathering on Craigslist and joined up. Seeing him, I got the impression of a Jesus-like figure; plenty to say, lots of people paying attention to him, very calm, very wise and _not_ to be messed with if you have an ego. His (later) wife Kei was there too, very quiet. He'd go around, talk to you, see how your art is. There was also Theirry Lafontaine, also a Sheridan teacher, we'd laugh about good ol' Quebec.
Hi Adam, I feel like I can't say enough how much I enjoy your content. Often I feel like I am not as much of an artist just because I am being judged by a system. Hey Adam, I think your videos make me come back to my senses. You see, it's my last semister for graphic design at Uni with about six 1.5 hour classes each day + projects, assignments, and in the evening I'm attending bootcamp classes at one of the biggest videogame companies in our country (Russia) where we learn the pipelines and work in small teams with an assigned role (mine is an artist ofc) to create a fully working and polished vertical slices (it's actually feels like a real job). Sounds like a lot of stuff, right? Well yeah, but the only thing I was doing recently beside that was feeling guilty, because instead of practicing and learning to draw in my free time before bed I watched a couple of videos and went to sleep. This 'practice and grind non-stop' bullshit advertisement was really set into my mind so deeply it's crazy. It felt like nothing I accomplished mattered, if I didn't do as those cool 'professionals' had told me. You, on the other hand, are one of the small amount of people who actually mentally support when people struggle. And now I think I deserved a little rest on Christmas and New Year. I really like things a 10 year old would think are cool,like pokemon and tmnt,and i like wholesome things like listening to a friend playing guitar at a bonfire,while eating potatoes we wrapped in Aluminium foil and put in the bonfire (Family Recipe), i like anime,but shit like gurren lagann, i love story in every kind of form, im not really into depressing stories,but i still love them with all my heart, i really love story,especially when its visual,like animation or in comics(or graphic novels) i want to do stuff like this,i dont know if thats just an excuse to flee from reality,but i got nothing if i dont have that
I feel like i want to put out the things i love I really like listening to stories of ood people as well,or eating stuff made by my mom or grandma. I really love fireworks. I really like celebrations and holidays. I really love every kind of food,especially really hearty stuff with beans potatoes and a lot of meat. I really love drinking beer and whiskey,but not drinking because you want to get smashed,but drinking because you are with friends. I really like going out into nature,going hiking and camping with friends. I really love doing sports with other people,especially combat sports. I really love old german and european folklore (german here) I really love going into mountains and to the sea. I really love tea man. I really love old places,old houses and abandonded Chocolade Factories. I really love big trees. I really love dogs,if i had enough money i would go into a cold place like sweden and have a big farm with a lot of dogs,especially huskies. I love warm rain in summer. I really love junping into cold water in einter and how alive it makes me feel. I really love running and breathing in fresh air. I really love talking about things i love. I really love pokemon. I really love dinosaurs,and going to museums. I love getting to know new people and talking to them. I really like drawing goofy shit. I know its a disease some fish have,but i really like the fish in the one chinese restaurant have i know where their eyes are really big. People should talk more about what they love instead of talking about their past trauma and how shit their lives are,i hate listening to the same story from a friend for the 10th time,even tho it may help with processing what happened,riding around on your own suffering is so pointless
As an educator myself who found myself addicted to learning once I could distance myself from highschool, I really feel like its no coincidence that so many people identify with this and it pains me so much. I hope not only online education mediums such as Adam's serves as an alternative, but it helps shape public education going forward. This shouldn't be the exception, it should be the norm.

And once you manage to convey that side to others (artist or not), it creates a kind of mutual understanding.. not just of art but of those deeper fears and discomfort that we all share, but explored in a playful and safe way.

I remember Bobby Chiu from the late 2000's, when I lived in Toronto. He ran something called Subway Sketches every Sunday, a group would meet on the subway every week at Union station to draw the unwitting bystanders. Back then I had no clue who he was, I'd maybe heard about this gathering on Craigslist and joined up. Seeing him, I got the impression of a Jesus-like figure; plenty to say, lots of people paying attention to him, very calm, very wise and _not_ to be messed with if you have an ego. His (later) wife Kei was there too, very quiet. He'd go around, talk to you, see how your art is. There was also Theirry Lafontaine, also a Sheridan teacher, we'd laugh about good ol' Quebec.

Hi Adam, I feel like I can't say enough how much I enjoy your content. Often I feel like I am not as much of an artist just because I am being judged by a system. I will hopefully soon get a spot in a Design Study Program here in Hamburg, that I wanted since 3 years. Anyway, thank you for the encouragement.

Hey Adam, I think your videos make me come back to my senses.
You see, it's my last semister for graphic design at Uni with about six 1.5 hour classes each day + projects, assignments, and in the evening I'm attending bootcamp classes at one of the biggest videogame companies in our country (Russia) where we learn the pipelines and work in small teams with an assigned role (mine is an artist ofc) to create a fully working and polished vertical slices (it's actually feels like a real job). Sounds like a lot of stuff, right?
Well yeah, but the only thing I was doing recently beside that was feeling guilty, because instead of practicing and learning to draw in my free time before bed I watched a couple of videos and went to sleep. This 'practice and grind non-stop' bullshit advertisement was really set into my mind so deeply it's crazy. It felt like nothing I accomplished mattered, if I didn't do as those cool 'professionals' had told me.
You, on the other hand, are one of the small amount of people who actually mentally support when people struggle. And now I think I deserved a little rest on Christmas and New Year.

I really like things a 10 year old would think are cool,like pokemon and tmnt,and i like wholesome things like listening to a friend playing guitar at a bonfire,while eating potatoes we wrapped in Aluminium foil and put in the bonfire (Family Recipe), i like anime,but shit like gurren lagann, i love story in every kind of form, im not really into depressing stories,but i still love them with all my heart, i really love story,especially when its visual,like animation or in comics(or graphic novels) i want to do stuff like this,i dont know if thats just an excuse to flee from reality,but i got nothing if i dont have that

I really like listening to stories of ood people as well,or eating stuff made by my mom or grandma.

I really like celebrations and holidays.

People should talk more about what they love instead of talking about their past trauma and how shit their lives are,i hate listening to the same story from a friend for the 10th time,even tho it may help with processing what happened,riding around on your own suffering is so pointless
As an educator myself who found myself addicted to learning once I could distance myself from highschool, I really feel like its no coincidence that so many people identify with this and it pains me so much. I hope not only online education mediums such as Adam's serves as an alternative, but it helps shape public education going forward. This shouldn't be the exception, it should be the norm.

What are your thoughts on laminating artwork? Nobody does it, and so far what I've done works, but, I'm worried about the long run effects. Would really appreciate your impute.

Im a Scottish student considering doing an HNC (higher National Qualification) in illustration next year and according to my current lecturer,its one of the hardest courses to get into so ive had a look at previous and current student work as well as a few youtube videos about making a good illustration portfolio and since ive always admired you and your work then I was wondering if youd have any furthwr advice.
