- In this video I discuss The Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO).
I am guilty of this psychological phenomenon as much as anyone.
I hope to give the viewer a few practical tips that they can apply to hopefully avoid financial debt and the stress that accompanies it.

I'll add a couple of tips.
Buy samples. Sometimes you don't have to own a whole set just to scratch the itch of trying something, and it helps you decide which things you just kinda enjoy vs stuff you can't live without. Part of the fun of the hobby is opening boxes and smelling things for the first time, not necessarily using them daily.
Do mashups. It'll double your collection and give you variety.
Pace yourself. It's a marathon, not a sprint. You're always going to want everything now and then you'll be "all set." That's not how it works. You're always going to want new stuff.
When it comes to eBay, be very patient. There are millions of vintage razors out there. If someone else wants to outbid you, let them. I found a perfect condition fat boy for less than $50 by letting dozens and dozens of other ones go because it was more money than I wanted to spend.
Murphy and McNeil is awesome. Used items work just fine.
Well said! I Preach the Good News of Samples all the time to guys when they DM me with questions regarding which set to buy.
If you don't mind Lee I "pinned" your comment, it's full of Nuggets that could help a lot of guys out.
I have a few more videos planned, not exactly like this one, not this topic. But geared at helping guys out, especially new wet shavers and if you don't mind, I might bounce a few ideas of you.
I was chatting with John Venturino about this the other day. I never worry about getting outbid on eBay, and I always set a limit what for what I think is reasonable. I only bid on something I've thought long and hard about, and I do have a Saving Budget for certain purchases.
@@Tobins_throwbacks Thank you! And feel free to get in touch any time. I've made enough mistakes to hopefully help people avoid making a few.
Problem is some companies don't do samples, so you're pretty much forced to purchase a whole tub. Another thing is not knowing if certain soaps will ever come back and if they do, we don't know when. I've just learned to accept it as part of the business.

Great job Tobin..
I shaved for over 30 yrs with a 1975 Gillette Super Speed and Barbasol to save money. Being the only source of blue-collar income. And I was content.
I jumped in neck deep this past year into the wet shave craze after my wife had established her business over the past three years.
Don't get me wrong, I love all the artisans and the wonderful diversity we have, and I want to continue to support them.
But at the end of the day, my shave with my 1975 Gillette and a tub of Mikes Natural soap and homemade aftershave is all I need.
Great reminder to keep our relationships as first priority, our budgets in line, and our hobbies as hobbies.
God Bless!
@@shandor589 That's a great quote I don't believe I had ever heard it before.
I love super speeds!
Mike's is a great product!
Absolutely, relationships! Well said Shannon!
Have a great week!
Thanks Tobin your advice and support is taken as I fully understand your advise it is well taken
Thanks Jeffrey! I struggle with it on a weekly basis, having a budget has been my biggest "safeguard".
Have a good one !
I did something very important very early on that has allowed me to negate FOMO. Given that, in my position, I just can not have most things, even items that people in Europe or the US would look at as being trivial. I turned my jealousy around and reframed it as vicarious enjoyment and happiness for my shave friends.
I remember discussing this with you in the past and it's just Reason Number 54 as to why I love that bald head of yours SO MUCH 😊
@Tobins_throwbacks ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️you are a beautiful ginger Squirrel Lord, Tobin. Love that bundle of squirreliness
Wow Tobin, this is an eye opening message and very much needed.
FOMO is a tool the advertising industry has used forever. In our hobby, FOMO, is promoted by phrases like “limited run”, “only 100 being made”, “one time offer” and then the blatant “don’t miss out, buy now”
My control factor is the size of my shaving storage area. I’m limited to x number of soap tubs and splashes. I use the replenishing rule. Only when something runs out do I replace it, filling the open space, many times it will be an item from my wishlist.
Thanks Al! You are absolutely correct sir, 100%
And I like your control factor, Ive seen it work very well for guys.
Have a great week sir, I'll be in touch!
First year I dove in 10 miles deep, but once I found the razor/blade/brush/soaps that works best for me, I'm done and will only stick to those products.
All purchases were made after obligations were paid and savings added to.
Now, I'm in full blown debt reduction and only giving myself a tiny allowance. If I do make any purchases in the future that tiny allowance is going to either have to be saved up or I start putting budget get started kits together for friends.
Yeah, it took some coin to find what best worked for me, but now that I have I'm appreciative of what I do have...and hopefully what I can do to pay it forward to help others get started in the hobby.
That's the way to do it!
I'm with you in seeking debt reduction, the wife and I aren't getting any younger and have started considering our retirement savings more and more.
We have been fairly diligent in the past, but now that the boys are grown we can afford to contribute more and an easy way to do that is continuing to find ways of "trimming the fat" .
Have a good one Jonathan!
Agreed 100%. Thanks for making this, Tobin. I’m sure it wasn’t easy.
Luckily, I’m on the back 9 of this experience, I’ve sold off my huge personal brush collection (I had over 100). I’ve also bought and sold hundreds of razors finding what works best for me, plus, what I kept. I’ve shrunk my razor collection down to about 8 - 10 razors.
I also have a confession to make;
I almost became a whistle-blowing de shaving RUclipsr, because of the marketing bs misleading people, bad advice being shared en masse and also, like you, the yes-men content creators where every product reviewed is amazing.
Then, I discovered your channel and realized Matthew is a straight-shooter too. I’d probably be the least popular one because I’m not good at candy-coating things. You cover what I was going to in a more relatable manner, so thank you and keep it up brother!
@@Lahey1579 Thanks James! It's an epidemic on RUclips. TONS of content creators in ALL communies pushing crap that they don't believe in as they claim and then buying tons of stuff and showing it off to induce FOMO.
AND, It wasn't easy to make I hesitated a few times.
Hope you're doing well brother
Now that Im retired i have to watch what I spend. I enjoy your content for a lot of reasons, one of many is that I never feel like you are pressuring me or that you are "pushing a sale". Thank you once again young man for your videoa
🙏👍
Thank you sir!
I try my best to not make it about sales, and focus on the product and hope to guide the viewer into a decision as to whether or not that product is for them.
This is where Hendrix took issue with me.
Have a great week!
Good advice. Everyone generally seems to be enablers but nobody really reminds folks to stay within their limits.
Ive noticed the same thing, ive spoke up a couple times in forums and comments and was basically treated like a leper.
Thanks Steve, it's something I think about often and it was past time to do this video.
Hope you had a great weekend!
@@AdamBarbarathat sucks, I've seen this happen to guys too. Keep on keeping on brother
Great video Tobin You put a lot of work and thought into this and it shows. Keep up the great work!
Side note I purchased Greenwich because of your review and it did not disappoint my fiance and I both love it.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! Greenwich is a great scent!
Excellent video and advice, Tobin. Thanks for raising the issue. It definitely covers way more ground than wet shaving, but is right on point for us in particular. Find myself having to resist the urge on all aspects of the hobby, so the tips on how to avoid are most welcome! Haters are gonna hate, so don't be discouraged by negative comments. You've done the right thing once again. Have a great week, brother!
@@RHDaveShaves hey Dave! For me, having a budget with a monthly allow for shaving has been huge for me.
Thanks Brother, i was hesitant to make the video, but I'm glad I did. Hope you had a great Monday!
Absolutely did, thanks. Hope you did as well.
@RHDaveShaves it was a long nearly 12 hour work day, exhausting but good.
Thank you for making this video. I have fallen into the trap of FOMO because of social media. My wife has cut me off and told me no more shave soap 😂. I appreciate you.
😁 thanks! We all do, I am tempted every day and thankfully now days I avoid IG and FB and that makes it easier.
Have a good one brother!
Great advice Tobin! Early on in my wet shaving journey, I knew I had to set a budget.... I have done quite well doing this and I also highly recommend it to others. Sometimes " out of the ordinary things happen", ( washing machine goes out, vehicle needs mechanical work done, etc.) At that point, common sense and practicality goes a long way. Anyway, have a great weekend!
Thanks Nathan! A budget is the best advice we can give anyone. We just bought a new washer and dryer two years ago, hoping to get some good mileage out of the ones in the garage 😊
Have a good one brother!
I really appreciate you doing this video and it will help some folks including me realizing FOMO is happening. Some great advice Mr. Fetters. I know it probably was not easy putting this video out but it is much appreciated brother.
Thanks Ronnie! I struggle with Fomo almost daily, whether it's a tool for the garage or backyard, Oregon Duck Merch or wet Shaving. So many things fighting for my attention and dollar.
I hope I raised a little awareness with this one.
And yes sir, it's the kind of video that's not easy and for a few reasons.
Thanks brother, have a good one!
The pitfalls and the rabbit hole is real. Never looked at it from the aspect of "FOMO", but it is very real. Thank you for speaking up in the community.
You bet! Thanks Robbie, I appreciate you brother! I forgot to ask you, how was movie night, was Sonic 3 as good as the first two?
@@Tobins_throwbacks well, my son was bored and wanted to go play with his toys, so we never finished it.
Absolutely! I try to bring similar topics up on the Facebook groups occasionally, that you don’t need the, “latest and greatest.” A small selection of hardware and software really is all one needs to get sooooo much joy out of this hobby. 😊
100%
It really is! If you are getting joy from your shave setup, you're doing it right! And it doesn't take a million pieces of hardware to do that. Ive learned from my own mistakes lol.
Have a great week!
Tobin, I appreciate this video. There are a few sets I’ve held off on purchasing due to financial obligations, but the temptation to purchase is there. It takes a ton of strong will to resist the urge to just charge everything to a credit card. 7 years ago my wife and I were damn near 50k in credit card debt while she was finishing school (she went back as she wanted a career change) and I was the sole provider. At that time I was making peanuts compared to today. It took me creating a part time landscaping business while working my full-time job to clear us out of the debt. I refuse to ever go back into debt. Having the cash to pay for things is essential to a stress free life and has helped our lives tremendously as far as happiness. Although credit cards kept us going during that time of need they almost destroyed us, and it was a very hard climb out of that hole once it was dug. Thanks for this video. Its a great reminder to people within the community to stay within their limits. The temptation to purchase will always there, its all about being in control.
Thanks, it's easy to get sucked in, and you're right, it's not worth it in the long run. Getting out of debt can be a real struggle, I'm glad to hear you were able to find a way and that you had the fortitude to achieve it.
Have a good one brother!
Tobin you hit a flipping homer, aka HomeRun with the U-Tube on FOMO, you are so gutsy to post this, as I am sure you will get blow back from so retailers, who you might slow down people lining up for the latest, greatest biggest, largest, or product everyone need. Keep the great content coming, be safe.
Your comment Spence words of wisdom could not been explained better by. Victor David Hanson. IMHO
Thank you! Victor Hansen is a name I haven't heard in a while. 😊 Thank you!!!
So far, the only hate I've gotten is from viewers. I think most retailers will appreciate it.
Have a good week brother and thanks again!
Tobin thank you for your heart felt plea to help others who are buying products they don't need or can’t afford. FOMO is an acronym I wasn't aware of until now and know I know. The concept has been around since time. I think you have a personal experience with the pitfall and now you're speaking out to help others. That's very noble of you. Personally I went into wet shaving to save money not spend it. You're right about separating what you need from what you want. Think about your next purchase for a month, like you said, and don't go over your budget. It's just shaving. Again, I commend you on your honest and straightforward advice and I hope it gets to the right people. Thank you again.
Hey Harley, thank you! I hope it brings some awareness and helps people avoid some stress in the New Year and years to come.
Have a great week!
There's no one else more genuine than this guy right here
Thank you sir!
Tobin. Well considered & well raised/discussed. Good man. Well done!
Thank you sir, hope you had a great weekend!
I hope you don’t get any heat for this video, it’s spot on and people watch you because of your honesty! You rock brother! 🤘🏻
Thanks Sean! So far just one negative comment and one DM both from viewers. One guy was telling me "that my video is like the pot calling the kettle black" and I straight up responded with " No Shit Sherlock, tell me you didn't watch the WHOLE video without telling me You didn't watch the whole video" 😄🤣
That was the point of the video... Speaking from personal experience lol.
Have a good one brother!!
Great video Tobin and much needed! I'm sure we've all fallen victim to FOMO, I know I have many times. I had to stop and take a hard look at what I needed to spend on and what I wanted to spend on. The need list is always so much shorter! Thanks for supporting the community through the good and the bad. And also for not being afraid to say what's needed. Have a good one my friend!
@@jeffdenker145 Thanks Jeff I definitely struggle with it almost daily with different things. I appreciate you Hope you have a great week Jeff!
I think there should be more creators talking about the risks of FOMO. With this video you showed a lot of wisdom and courage, it's truly inspiring.
Thank you, your comment means more than you may realize.
I just woke up and already people are throwing shade at me in private messages and in the comments. I knew I'd take heat for it, I hesitated several times prior to recording this.
In the video I'm speaking from personal experience. I've fallen prey to overspending and impulse buying myself.
Thank you!
Have a great week!
@@Tobins_throwbacks Man I know what you are talking about. I am an italian shaving tuber and months ago I talked about this thing as well and I was a bit lynched in the comments (and not only). That's why I really appreciate your video. Let's stop feeding the fat cow.
Appreciate the real talk sir!
Thanks John, hope you had a good Monday sir!
Great video. In the last month I have gone overboard with shave soap and aftershave sets. I have to get back to ordering samples first if available or just the aftershave and use an unscented or neutral scented soap that I already have. I have enough razors and brushes and have been able to not order more for now anyway. I am trying to stick to a budget but it's not easy. Have a great week. 👍
Thanks William, the struggle is real! Samples are your friend! 😋
Have a great week brother!
Great video Tobin. I have fallen into the FOMO trap on a couple of other things and I have learned not to jump immediately on buying something, Have a great week.
Thanks, it's tough to resist the urge to buy new stuff! Especially when its related to the Oregon Ducks, Star Wars and wet shaving 😅 Im a sucker for those 😊have a good one brother!
Great video Tobin. As the sole income in my household I have a budget set in place, and I’m into wet shaving and beard care. It’s easy to go down the rabbit hole and spend money. I learn early that there is always going to be another new fragrance or new wet shave/beard related product. Key is to stick to the budget and yes make your wish list and stick to that also. Have a good Sunday Tobin!
Thanks Manny! A budget is the best advice we can give anyone. It's something that has become foreign to our society today.
And you're right, there is always going to be another "must have", always.
Have a good one!
Coming into this hobby, 2 weeks in and I definitely needed to hear this! I already spent $400 on just Razors
It's a great hobby and community, Tobin does a great job of keeping it real.
@AdamBarbara yup, one of my favorite wet shave creators
I feel ya, it happens to the best of us. It still gets me, setting a budget was the smartest thing ive ever done (financially).
Have a great week brother !
Real shit
Thanks Conner! I was hesitant to do the video, I'm glad I did tho, I struggle with Fomo more often than I care to admit, have a good one brother!
Probably a great reminder for a lot of guys. My wife just recently took inventory of everything I have gotten in the last year and gave me an estimated value at about $2K. However, when she ran numbers through the bank, I only spent about $1100. Made her feel better about it that I had at least been purchasing wisely, but it was a clear reminder of how much I had been spending, and to rein it back a bit. Ironically, I just saw Rich Hansen is offering up brushes to the shave dad’s group, but it’s something I have planned to get at some point, so I’m still good, right? 😂
It adds up and our families are paying attention as you pointed out.
The Rich Man brushes will go fast! I bought one yesterday while talking with Rich in the phone 😊
Have a great week brother!
Great topic Tobin! I was just talking about this recently with Matthew in a round about way with some advice he was giving for new wet shavers. Oh man, FOMO is so real and if you're in more than one hobby it is compounded like nobody's business. It's super easy to get upside down and find yourself in a hole that takes years to get out of. Being a maker and wanting to do different things, every path you go on can become a problem. 3D printing, resin casting, wood turning, metal casting, metal working, CAD drawing, air brushing, on and on. Also every material requires some different tools to work with it on top of the different material costs. Yeah, it's kind of a nightmare trying to navigate everything and then you add FOMO on top of all that-hahaha! I told someone the other day that as much as I'd like to get that razor, I had to get a belt sander instead. It prevented one FOMO by being a FOMO, as it was almost 1/2 the cost it was normally and a tool that I needed. Hahaha! Hope you're having a great one bro!
Thanks Ian! Glad you choose the Belt Sander, I know it's a tool you'll use.
Multiple hobbies really makes it a struggle and in a lot of guys are also struggling with addictions like alcohol and money really starts to run thin.
Back when I drank I would spend tons of money I didn't have on Amazon and other websites 😉 get a good buzz going and throwing my money around 😅
Have a good one brother!
Glad to see a new video, cant think of anyone better to tackle this topic
Thats kind if what i was thinking

You are a real one Tobin I have tried to go to scentless soap and just buying splash unless I just have to have the matching soap
Thanks Daniel! That's a great approach my friend Enrique does exactly that and it works very well for him I've considered doing it with a couple different splashes.

Well said Tobin, and even if one can afford it, do we REALLY NEED it should be one of the first questions we should ask ourselves. Excellent video and information, good sir! 🇺🇸👊😎
Well said! Thats something that often runs through my mind, with a lot of things these days I ask my self.
Do I need it AND will it benifet my channel and viewers. What i mean is, is it something that if I review it will people get any value from it.
Hope you're having a good week brother!

Great video Tobin!
Thanks brother!
@ most of us get into wet shaving for 2 reasons. 1. Save money ( those dang cartridges are too expensive for what they are) 2. Better shave ( those cartridges don’t do a good job)
Good information..I had to stop buying because I had so much soap and splashes that I was not getting the enjoyment out of what was being bought. My enjoyment has returned with the appreciation of what I do have and working my way through product I have.
Thank you! Enjoying the shave is what matters.. Have a good one!
Thanks Tobes!
You bet! Thank you!
Well done brother!

Great video, for myself I only buy vintage razors and thats 5 in total , sure I'd love modern new razors but I know I'm happy with cheap vintage and injoy them, and for the same reason most of my soaps were purchased used or sampled only.
Thanks Paul, I've suggested many Gillette Techs and Super Speeds to new shavers, due to the price and that they deliver a great shave. Your approach is a smart one, have a good one brother!
Excellent video Tobin. Completely agree with your advice. It's easy to fall into fomo traps, and I applaud you for making this video - especially as we're in that time of the year when there's a lot of den clearing going on.
Thanks Lawrence! I hesitated making it, but after recording it I was glad I did.

Fear Of Missing Out, or Razor Acquisition Disorder , or Soap Acquisition Disorder affect some people but not others. Guessing, does not affect most people. Behavior problem, or something , impulse control problem. Person should only have maybe three good razors, no more than one or two soaps at a time, and maybe other practical limits on other product categories. I have for a basic example, one soap which is somewhat hard , and one in a squirt-can, and one in a tube. The reason for the somewhat hard soap is that it is a main soap. The reason for the other two is that they were alternates I selected for other purposes, like some situations of "just in case...". NO plans to buy another soap soon, because I still have several weeks worth of shaves from the somewhat hard shaving soap.
🙏
This video made me purchase Greenwood Envy 😂 jk
I'm all seriousness, as usual, an absolutely excellent video. The psychological effect is absolutely real. If left unchecked, any hobby can become a full blown addiction.
🤣 it's so good tho! 😂 My conversation with you was one of main influences for doing this video. Thanks Enrique!
Bandrew from the Podcastage RUclips channel has similar guidance. Great tips on focusing on quality products vs quantity and high frequency.
Thanks, I don't believe I've seen that channel. I'll search for it.

Things just got real😊
😅
After a Christmas splurge I sort of took January off from buying anything new. I want a few more scents and maybe I'll get them on or before April 13th when I turn the F word (40). I will say that I get fomo from the holographic lables PAA does.
Taking a break after Christmas is wise, I always spend too much. Between family and the cost of the holiday it self .
The Holo labels are cool! And they are super expensive to make, so it makes sense to me that they are limited. But I feel ya brother!
40 yikes... 😜
This reminds me of when Beaver Cleaver asked Wally why credit cards were invented and Wally said that it’s so grown ups can buy things that they can’t afford 😂😂😂
😅 He was right lol have a good day sir!
Well said and NEEDED to be said Tobin. Another consideration in addition to the MONEY that we spend on wet shaving, is the SPACE required to store our goodies. Having your stuff packed up in corrugated cartons in a basement or other storage area does nothing for the enjoyment of this hobby. If you can’t see it, smell it and love it whenever you want to, you are truly missing out. (Unless you are one of those SEASONAL folks who actually divide your stuff by Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall).
Thanks Glenn! I had put this video off for too long.
And that's so true, boxing stuff up is not the way to go. So far I've only done that with brushes but I rotate them. Currently my badger brushes are out for use.
Have a great week my friend!
Went a little crazy last year so I should be good till the year 2300 😂 fortunately we had no problem handling it, but once I got to the point where I could use a difference soap and razor every day of the month, I had to shut it down. But let me just say, every soap you said was a banger was a banger. So would we be called a wet head?😂
Yes, you would be, haha! 😂
And thank you! Hearing that you agreed with my reviews means a lot!
The fragrance im reviewing today won't be for everyone, but oh brother, I love it!
Have a good one Dan!
We are wet shavers, consumers… unfortunately hobbies suck you in… if we weren’t spending it on soap we would find something else. It’s a slippery slope.. no one needs 20 razors and 50 brushes but we’re damn proud of them haha!! When I see something fresh often times I think about the pile of stuff just collecting dust and the soaps that probably aren’t even good anymore… have fun but don’t be wasteful.
Amen😊 you're spot on too! That's one thing that helps me, is remembering the hardware and software that already isn't getting any love
Have a good one brother!
The bank balance dictates what I can and can't purchase, and keep out of the red, simples, if I can't afford it this week, then so be it, might be able to next week, if not the week after.
Don't do credit or loans, as above 👆
Have a great weekend 🕉
Avoiding credit is a GREAT idea, I actually no longer have any credit cards. I couldn't avoid the temptation, so like you if it's not in my bank account I can't spend it.
