    is it not possible to turn the head to the side in that position to avoid being "suffocated", or is that not possible because your arms are too close to your head and prevent you from turning?

    • @brandoncoffey4492
      @brandoncoffey4492 10 месяцев назад +4

      I think its more than just having your face smothered, Lo's face is right between each of Meregali's pecks so even if he does turn his head he is still being smothered, if he is able to turn his head to a 90 degree angle he would still be getting smothered by his own arms and/or the gi constantly breathing in his own carbon dioxide, it is such a miserable place to be that just slowly sucks the life out of you.

    • @raiklaub975
      @raiklaub975 10 месяцев назад

      @@brandoncoffey4492 Thanks for the answer. I didn't think about the gi's of both of them, which impede the fresh airflow on all sides. Even if the pressure isn't that strong and Jo can turn his face, all the fabric around the face prevents him from breathing. I prefer Nogi. Does that also work there, just because of the relentless pressure?

    • @rtasi2000
      @rtasi2000 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@raiklaub975 in no gi its much more common especially from meregali's team at new wave who specialize in it. go look up daniel manasoiu of new wave ( nicholas's team mate ) and he has done it countless times in no gi matches. its much more common in no gi. meregali is the only one in gi that does it and has submitted a couple people so far in the gi with it.

  • @christophermoriarty7843
    @christophermoriarty7843 10 месяцев назад +8

    Claustrophobia/panic/sense of helplessness. It’s so hard to just relax there when you’re already losing by a lot. It feels like it will never end and you’ll be trapped there forever. To be able to stay calm there in that type of situation requires so much emotional control that few high-level athletes have.
    For guys that are used to losing all the time in practice and have never been able to win enough to be invited to a tournament like this, it’s probably no big deal to just get smothered there. For an elite athlete, who’s used to winning (at least 75 to 80% of the time) and rarely losing (usually by slim margins), it’s a totally different ballgame. It is a tough thing to train as well. You can put yourself in shitty positions when you’re tired during practice, but to be able to stay calm under the pressure of a tournament situation like this (especially when you are the underdog against the favorite) is just different.

      Totally. Once I had the heaviest purple belt lean on my chest in kesa gatame, I wanted to tap so bad but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I survived. Ever since then, pressure doesn't really phase me anymore because nothing is close to as bad as that.
