I’m typing this from my tent in Glen Nevis at the end of the trail, absolutely brilliant experience. What made it most enjoyable for me was going with the flow and not having a set in stone plan to camp at specific places or complete it in any set amount of days. It’s good to know where the best, most convenient campsites are in case you want to use them but I just went with how I felt in the moment and ended up with some amazing wild camp spots that presented themselves at the right time and not having planned them it made it more special. One practical bit of advice though is making sure your sleeping bag and spare clothes stay dry. I got some wild thunder and hailstorms and my rucksack cover blew away resulting in my pack getting soaked. Good job I had the important stuff in dry bags or that could’ve been a big problem. Doing it in the first week of June midges have been an annoyance here and there but not that much of an issue overall. This Glen Nevis campsite is top notch btw, amazing facilities so great to come to at the end and stay a day or two extra in comfort if you finish the trail early
Excellent advice about the dry kit mate.. really important to not let that get wet! Glad you had a brilliant experience mate.. it’s a great trail and i’m sure i’ll do it again 1 day!
Good advice Liam, especially about footwear/liner socks. One thing I would add, take 3 or 4 pairs of plastic foot bags that are used for pedicures, they're basically sock shaped plastic bags. Once you stop for the day, power your feet, put fresh socks on, then place the plastic foot bags over your socks and replace your trail runners, your socks stay dry, and the heat off your feet dry your shoes out while your around camp/in the pub etc 👍🏻 I'm doing the Pennine way at the end of this month again, this time with my daughter, watch this space as they say (on my channel obviously 😉) I've enjoyed watching your journey on the whw, I'm also following hiker sheep and bobo, she's walking over 500 miles round Scotland... respect.
Hi. I had to drop out at Balmaha this week due to wearing Solomon hiking boots. I’ve had these boots for years and never had issues but after 25km on the first day I was in so much pain, and had 3 blisters. I went to Run4It this Thursday and picked up Hoka Challenger 7’s. Going to retry in September.
Loved doing the WHW iv did it 2 times and thinking doing it again , did it in 6 days , next time im doing it solo , we had baggage transfers tho , on the first day we were carrying out own stuff untill i got a massive nail thro the heel of my boots and i could feel every crunch going in my heel but kept going , im hooked on your videos even got my mum watching u to
A small container or small ziplock bag with some athletes foot powder or talc realy helps with damp feet. Looks a bit dodgy though but it's well worth it.
I live close to you Liam in the Calder Valley. I don't get chance to get out too much because of my job. I do about 30 to 40k steps per shift and those moreno wool socks are a game changer. I love your videos Liam, proper down to earth. I do love it when I can get out on the moors near me, Ogden water and the climb up to withins on the Roman Road 👌
Very decent advice, starting with doing it in your own tempo. I prefer gtx boots and tough merino socks, (can't stand wet feet and need the ankle support). With 3 pairs, I change into dry socks after lunch and keep a clean pair for sleep. Zero blisters on WHW and GGW so that works for me. (Not going into the liner-debate, never tried it and apparently it's also a sensitive military issue). Had a full 2 days of food left after the WHW, there really are loads of places to sit and eat well or to stock food. +1 for smidge and my 'midge-net-hat'. Agreed much on emphasising 'Leave no trace'.
I’m at glen Rosa campsite on arran Watching this. Just started raining on my x mid pro. First night in it. Love the thing. U can easily wild camp on the top of goat fell. Just too windy for me. Hope u try it Liam. The views are like lord of the rings No joke !
Wore a pair of Altra lone peak 6 when I did the Way in 2022 and have a brand new pair of Lone Peak 8s breaking in right now for when I re-walk it this September. You cant beat that big toe box.
Don't think you forgot anything mate, pretty much nailed it. The only thing I'd say is the permit zones along loch Lomond if you're thinking about staying on loch Lomond are only £4 or £4.50 for the night and the spot I stayed at was on the loch side, it was stunning.
Another great video mate👌 great advice,i live on west coast of Scotland and i think we take what we have for granted sometimes, our country is one of the most spectacular places to be alone in,the southern upland way looks good one aswell 👌👏👏👍
For me the most important part was getting pepared in the gym three months in advance, traning cardio and muscles. I had no muscle pain when I arrived in Fort Williams. I was exausted of course and on the last two days I had two blisters, but beside this, perfect.
Myself and my sister are doing it in september and im juat about ready for it. Juat need to get skme more hikes in just to keep the fitness up but otherwise im ready to go
Loved your vids. Coming from across the pond and starting Oct 12. Wildcamping all the way taking 7 days. Do I really need a water filter? Or is it just convenient when you are passing streams to know you can get water anytime ya want. Cheers
I did the WHW year before last. Absolutely loved it. I stayed at camp sites though cos as a solo female it just felt less scary. Love your vids!! Do you think you will ever do something like the appalachian trial? Would love to follow you on that.
Ey up Liam I’m fairly new to the channel and I love it… steadily catching up on ya videos and just watched this one… and can I ask what undies do you wear when hiking? 😂🤙🏻
plaster vaseline on your feet evrery morning to prevent blisters for long days walking the WHW works brilliant stops friction picked that tip up few years ago its spot on 👍
Bro I love my camping and got a vwt4 camper as well started watching your chanel your the guy top man brilliant videos that blot outdoors is a sausage 😅 his videos get up the welsh 3 peaks if u can ill send the list to you bro thanks Alex from swansea
You beasted the WHW, mate. April to mid May and end of September into October is best for avoiding those wee midge toerags. April can have some surprisingly good weather these days. Spread it out to 9 days and take it wasy and have a pint nearly every night.😂 I wear an isocool liner sock and a thicker sock as well. Never get blisters. I wear both boots and trail runners. Boots for the shit weather and trail runners for the hotter weather like in France. If Im doing point to point in the highlands, I wear boots. I dont like peatbogs in trail runners.
You were lucky with the weather Liam as well, and sound advice on the midges, a couple of your utuber mates didn’t fair so well with the weather a few weeks at the back of you, but that’s Scotland 4 seasons 1 day and as we say yir skin is water tight🤣🤣👍
Apologies for hijacking this thread but today Lidl have a limited offer of a set of four different sizes collapsible containers that are ideal for what we do. OK with boiling water.
Did you say "never had a tick touch my wood . ! Don't want a bugger down there but they do like to find places of being secure . Warm n moist .. down there under armpits and possibly crack of an arse too .. 😵💫 enjoyed the highland way vlogs .. and where you had that banging Chinese .. beats camping rations for sure .
