    Very interesting! I am a long time horse person, and I still have some of my Breyers in my real life stable with my real life horses. Thank you for your comment about the cruelty to horses in all the disciplines. So true. Humans seem to always push everything to extremes. We are a stupid bunch.

      Your comment is so true. Look at what has been done to the beautiful Arabian horse. The face is so dished now that its truly deformed and can cause breathing and eating problems. And look what we've done to dogs. Some of the flat faced breeds can't even have normal births anymore. Talk about a red flag. Yes , we surely are a stupid bunch that care for own pleasure above all else.

    My grandfather worked for Breyer back in the day and used to take us kids to work with him. Needless to say we have many old models. I also owned real horses most of my life, primarily QHs and Appaloosas. My last QH was a great grandson of Impressive (double negative) well built with excellent conformation and temperament, and lived to be 28 yo. He looked a lot like the Orren Mixer poster. Now, looking at Impressive, he doesn't appear to have had 1/2 of the extreme muscling of InTuit. I can totally understand the controversy and wish breeders would truly be more ethical and humane breeding for both quality and health, not just looks. Form should meet function. I doubt Terry would have been a successful QB if he were built like Arnold.

    I call the modern halter horse a "lead and feed". That's all they're capable of. It's truly a disgrace for the Quarter Horse and associated breeds. These horses are supposed to be the epitome of a versatile using horse, such as racing in the morning, halter class midday, jumping and cattle work in the afternoon and evenings. These over muscled freaks are incapable of doing any of these tasks. The model actually looks better than the real horse it was supposed to represent. Well muscled yes, but capable of doing anything asked of it. (Jan Griffiths).

      You’re right. The model is not an accurate depiction of the real horse. It’s as if the model maker knew that he or she should slim the contours of the model down to avoid negative criticism.

    This is a great video. Informative. I do think Breyer as a company made the best decision. There’s been a lot of western horses as celebration horses but never a halter western horse because the model horse community in general does not like them. They’ve made multiple portrait models of halter horses but choosing one as the celebration model feels a lot more like it’s defining of the whole event, if that makes sense. I think if Intuit had been a guest model (store special) INSTEAD of the celebration horse, there would not have been so much backlash. Believe me, I have Tennessee Walking Horses, I’d like nothing more than for my breed to be represented as a breyerfest celebration horse but Breyer is reluctant for that due to how many people don’t like them (even the pleasure horses!). The closest we’ve gotten is a portrait of bluegrass bandit and she also attended one year. There’s been some other TWH guests at breyerfest but they have not gotten portrait models. They’re still a company that wants to make ungodly amounts of money off of their fans. They do it in the way that will give them the most likely return of money.

    I've had real horses for 50+ years, primarily QH, TB and paints. Bitd, the QH you saw in halter classes, also competed in performance classes.
    The halter horse facet of the industry exploded in the 90s due to attractive tax write offs for owning high level competition horses, disposable income and people who didn't ride well enough or at all wanting to "compete".
    Impressive was a game changer, in that he was a naturally, heavily muscled horse that didn't require conditioning to be that way. He passed that trait on to his progeny. Sadly, much of this was due to the genetic disease HYPP.
    We humans tend to think more is better, which is where line breeding comes in. That's what it's called when it works, if it doesn't it's inbreeding.
    So breeders started producing horses that were related through impressive. The halter industry and AQHA knew about HYPP long before it had a name and knew the impressive bloodline was the cause, yet did nothing because of the money involved.
    So they came up with a genetic test for HYPP, but didn't stop breeding or registration of carriers. They actually wanted horses that had one copy of the disease because they'd get that look without active disease, even though breeding them could result in active disease!
    What AQHA should've done is not allow registration of horses unless they tested negative to being carriers. That would've stopped the disease quickly and completely because you can't show an unregistered horse at association events.
    These days we test for 5-6 genetic diseases in quarter horses and yes horses that carry one copy of disease gene can still be registered and bred.

    • @olive_eq08
      @olive_eq08 5 месяцев назад +1

      I didn't even realize how bad line breeding was in AQHA until I poked around looking for studs to possibly breed to my mare in the future. I could not find one that was not at least a bit related to her.

    • @tracyjohnson5023
      @tracyjohnson5023 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@olive_eq08 a little bit is ok. When breeding, I always think about what I want the horse to be good at, then I look at whether they would compliment conformationally.
      Some quarter horse bloodlines have become very specialized for specific events/purposes like halter horses, western pleasure, English hunter classes, cutting.
      However, you can still definitely find all around athletes. I've found cow bred or ranch bred crossed with running bred to be good. Athletic but have a brain. Hope this helps.

    Im building a model horse museum down in Virginia, i live in Alaska, my personal model collection is over 25,000 models, over half are Breyer. Though do to health I am mostly off the internet these days. I took on a partner 4 years ago to ship my collection too. Alaska just isn't the place to build such a museum. When it's done it will feature it's own yearly even kind of like a Breyerfest, but open to all makes and models. A yearly horse show, again with classes designed around all makes and models from breyers to stones, hartlands, to safari, schleich, mojo and cheval, best talking horses and even grand champions and of course Resins and micro minis. There will be a lecture hall for artist to come and give seminars and classes. Were even thinking of an on property motel so people can stay on property for the smaller events. And a camping site.as well.and areana for live horses. The works. All built around the Museum. I have over 38 companies represented in my collection so far.

    Wow...I did not know about this. I'm a bit out of the loop on Breyers, but I used to be really into them, and I still have a modest collection (Although most of them are still in storage at my parents' house...I don't have a lot of room in my small apartment, haha...Every time my parents come to visit, I try to get them to bring me more of my collection, heh.) I have 2 customized horses that are signed by their artist, one original finish signed by the owner of the horse it was based on, and 2 that I myself have repainted (one is still unfinished). I was even in a model-horse club as a teenager, and they held periodic "live shows" that I would go to. They had various 'classes' people would enter their model horses in...some of them were "halter" classes (just the horse standing there...(And, thanks to this video, I now understand why they were called that, haha.)), and others were "performance" classes, that had the horses in scenes and/or doing things. I haven't gotten any new model horses recently, as I'm still trying to get my old ones back, haha...also, they're expensive, and I don't really have the room. :P Also, I don't know of any local model-horse clubs where I'm currently living.

    Potato on toothpicks!!! Sigh. Sadly accurate for a lot of quarter horses, and others. I have a friend who loved her OTB mare who had lovely conformation right down to her knees- and then it was like her legs were barely visible. She had the tiniest, brittle feet...
    Anyway. AWESOME video. I was appalled at the footage of Intuit trying to walk. He didn't look all that good when he was swanning around his paddock, either. Poor fellow. Lovely markings and probably a sweet guy but wow. His body. :(
    Liked and subscribed.
    Edited to add that I'm a life-long horse lover, rider and champion of animals of all kinds. I prefer English riding for my own uses (mostly for comfort and trail riding) but I'm less concerned with what kind of horse a person rides or what their horse is wearing in terms of tack. As long as the horse is treated kindly, with respect and for their best health I'm good. Breeding only for looks is reprehensible no matter what species one chooses. I love Arabians, for example, but honestly I'd never buy a purebred in the US, unless it was of Polish descent, or crossed with another breed or two. Actually, mutts are my favorite, generally speaking! My two favorite childhood horses were a POA who was one inch too tall to be a true pony and an Arab-Morgan-TB mare. Both were gentle, super smart, kind, willing and just wonderful to spend time with. Riding them was such a dream...

    This video was so informative, I had no idea. I was very glad I hapoen to stumble upon your video. I got my first Breyer in 1969, when I was 7, my first Hartland at 6. I have a small collection of Breyers, and participated in the hobby in the 2000s while owning my own horses. I was subscribed to Quarter Horse Journal and Appaloosa Journal when the Impressive bred horses took over halter classes, then the whispering, and the articles that would mention a genetic mutation, but wouldn't say the stallion responsible. I still own those magazines. Those who choose to breed horses that will live their lives in pain, only see dollar signs.
    I have also been a die hard football fan since 1973, when I was 12. I remembered Terry Bradshaw playing. Yes, I am that old. And yes, he really is an idiot. Its obvious he doesn't care about the horse. He really wants accolades to feed his ego.
    Breyer has gone from a company that I looked forward to, even as an adult, well into my 40s, what model are they going to make next, to one, how much stuff can we make to bleed the consumer dry to fill the " I Need, I Want" monster.
    Thank you again for making this video. I shared it with a couple of my active hobby friends, including one that goes to Breyerfest every year in Kentucky.

    And we can see the snipey muzzle came down from Impressive. There is no way Intuit could put in a day's work as a cow horse. Dear gods, he is so overmuscled I don't see how his skeleton can continue carrying it. This is the first I've heard of this. I collected Breyer horses as an adolescent, and stored them away with my favorite books in my mother's attic when I grew up with the intent of giving them to my own children. But my mother had an attic cleaning frenzy and gave my childhood things away to her friend's child without consulting me. This is honestly the first I've thought about Breyer in decades. I did grow up into a career in dog training, and the whole animal politics world, with the occasional ride out on friends or family's horses. I'll stick to my can do a day's work that they were intended to do animals.

    I like telling this story as a way to show how insane model horse girls can be. I really wanted that model, dammit! I consoled myself with Ambrose. But Thoroughbreds break down WEEKLY in America, WEEKLY. Ruffian is famous for her breakdown, which was truly awful, and you know who has a Breyer model? It felt a bit hypocritical to me, to target one part of the equine industry and not another. To say nothing of plastic horses being Cthulu in the first place, no ethical consumption under capitalism BUT THEY'RE SO PRETTY I WAAAAAAANT THEM! If you want to get into the morality of model horses I'm game. XD
    Whether or not the model was made, the conformation inbreeding machine continues unabated. America is infamous for breeding shittier versions of horses from elsewhere.

    I had no idea about this, I think mainly because I don’t belong to their (Breyers) horse clubs, and I don’t go to Breyerfest. I have collected model horses since I was 7. I started buying them at Woolworth a long long time ago when I’d get my allowance. At the time, as it is now, I could never even dream of having a real horse, but I could make believe with a toy. I really find it incredible that it went so political, but I guess that is in all walks of our lives! Can’t escape it sadly. I do however fight against animal cruelty especially with horses, because of my love for them. These horses on steroids (if they on them) is cruelty, but then so are stacks and weights on the Tennessee Walkers feet to get them to step higher! There is no sense in it when there are breeds that naturally step high, why want the artificial lift?? I’ll say no more, this isn’t the place to fight that, I’m just making a point. These models are toys!! They are for make believe they are for dreaming, not a basis for political fights, that’s just insane. Rant over…..thank you for sharing!! Take care.

    I’m gonna be honest, sometimes people deserve to be cancelled. I don’t normally agree with the whole mob mentality thing, but there are times when it is useful. If something is actually wrong, it should be called out. If the people who feel called out and feel that their business is being threatened don’t like it, well that is exactly the point, and maybe they should stop their bad practices. It does not matter how sweet or kind or show savvy a horse is. If it has such large physical problems, it 1. Should not be promoted in the show ring, and 2. Should not be used as a breeder. I do not care if “that’s what the halter shows call for nowadays, it’s not the owners’ faults” because yes it is, actually. The owners are the ones breeding the horses. If every breeder suddenly stopped breeding those horses, then the show would be forced to go back to its true basics. But no one is going to do that because they are selfish and don’t want to miss out on the cash grab. It is the fault of everyone involved that these horses end up leading such miserable lives. And the people defending it sound just the same as the racing industry does after another horse needs put down on the track. It’s pathetic to say the least

I would love for Breyer to make an Impressive model mainly because he is an amazing horse a champion, but due to his mother who was the one who actual started HYPP he is shamed. He was just recently added to the AQHA hall of fame. I agree the halter world is out of control. My horse who is prefect for the ideal AQH was pushed aside for not having the muscle. But why are we blaming the horses? A halter horse deserves just as much right to be a celebration model as a race horse
