9S is one of the most tragic characters I've seen. His initial personality was an optimistic and caring android that became twisted after the heartbreaking events that followed. He loses 2B, forced to kill his own operator who was in love with him, learns the truth about YorHA's purpose, mankind's extinction and comes to the realization that everyone and everything was meaningless.
What confuses me is when people say they feel so sorry for 9S but can't stand A2. A2 went through multiple losses similar to 9S' loss of 2B. That is the reason she practically went feral with rage and went on a lengthy rampage of killing. It seems like 2B's memories' influence finally began to snap her out of it to where she began to regain her humanity. She endured horrible trauma. She has the attitude and bitterness that she does because of all the traumatic experiences she endured long before the timeline of the game.
Cool thing is you can do a sidequest where you learn about the existence of Executioner Units, and its sort of implied that 2B knew that they were a thing. Its almost a very, very subtle hint at the end twist.
Half Aluminum Chemist I actually found that side quest before the cutscene with A2 and 9S so when A2 said that 2B official name is 2E I went "that explains a lot" because 2B was always trying to not get attached to 9S
She was not neutral. She was VERY attached to 9S. She tried not to get close again as a defense mechanism because she couldn't stand hurting him anymore. Watch any cut scene of 2B witnessing 9S in pain or at risk of dying or losing his memories, and she falls to pieces emotionally. If Adam killed 9S, he'd just be reset to where he was last had his memories uploaded to the Bunker. 2B hunted down Adam, killed him, and physically CARRIED 9S all the way back to repair him just to avoid that.
Also, one of the units who 2B flies with in Route A's opening is an openly designated E-Type. There's also an H-Type, so I'd assume that's Hunter-Type like the ones who help you in the battle versus the giant sea machine lifeform. The others are B-Types afaik.
Route C/ending E is the true canon mainly because in ending E when the pods are rebuilding 9s and 2b you can see that 9s doesn’t have a stab wound through his chest.. this implies that that route c is the correct way that things went down instead of route d, where 9s and A2 die next to each other
his acting was the best, between the JP and ENG actors.... the game must have connected with him on some deeper level because he went ALL out like a beast with the acting.
@@zenocopy7580 is it just me or the jp va get paid well on anime projects compared to video games? because on video games it was like they weren't trying their best (they just done it decently) while they did great job in anime (with passion). its like ENG va but the otherway around (being really good on video game but shitty on anime)
Holy shit dude, I always thought 2Bs obsession with 9S was a little weird but apperantly it was part of her programming. No wonder she was always willing to kill him when he asked instead of finding an alternate way to save him. It seems that 9S really was the one that suffered the most from all of this.....
This was by far the best ending because A2 got what she wanted. If you didn't know A2 on one of her first missions was sent to go destroy a enemy server. All of the androids decided that they were going to die and all agreed to die together. A2 miraculously survived and had no more purpose but she saved 9S, fulfilled 2B's mission and was reunited with the androids
9s, a2, and 2b got revived by their pods in true ending E. Not directly stated, but you could assume that's what happened based on the conversation of the pods.
We all did the same knowing this help was just illusionary as not everyone is willing to sacrifice their data and in this situation there wouldn't be enough ships to help everybody. But, does it matter?
I've seen people saying that 9S shouldn't have been able to keep up with A2, but the reason he could is quite simple. Being infected with the logic virus also removes all limiters in a unit, allowing them to fight until their body cant. This info is revealed through A2's story if you find the documents for her and Amenome's backstory.
Limiters bein broken is also referenced to the book in Nier Automata called YoRHa boys. Where someone got knfected with a virus, they not only perform well in strength wise but also able to not make the same mistakes again in combats
After the release of stage play and the novel YoRHa Boys, it was revealed that male models were superiors in combat capabilities, but they were put into unfair test and eventually it's decided that all male models could only refurbished into Scanner type. The reason why the "mastermind" was doing this is unknown, but probably to ensure Project YoRHa would ended with all of them dead since male YoRHa combat units would be hard to put down
Between C and D I've always preferred C. A2 gets so little screen time compared to 2B and 9S and it feels like this is only ending where it gets some resolution. Her telling Pod 042 he's alright is a moment I really like after their interactions.
I picked C the first time. Even though we don't spend as much time with A2 as with 9S I felt she was right. The game did an incredible job of making that fight a hard decision.

Adam Bishop I actually didn't have a problem with hacking (except for the fucking SOUL BOX UGH). My problem was how slow and limited his combat was, but lore-wise it makes sense.
Fair enough, I get why he was the way he was, non combat unit and all. One attack button got old quick. And YES, Soul Box was like top 5 in worst moments of gaming for me. Holy shit that caused some rage quitting. I specifically remember beating it once, then dying on that memory boss after forgetting to heal. Then...seeing myself respawn outside that waterfall before I'd gone inside...AAAAAAHHH!!!
Interesting tidbit about the fight, if you choose to play as 9S, the plane will be two-dimensional, but if you choose A2, it'll be three-dimensional. I think this is meant to reflect the differences in their mental states: 9S is so consumed by rage and loss that he looks at the world in a very surface-level way. Without 2B or the humans, he sees no other point in living other than just getting revenge. He could've forgiven A2 and tried to live out a normal, fulfilling life, but he no longer could. A2, while objectively wrong in that there was nothing left to save of humanity, had a much more calm and understanding demeanor here. If 9S didn't fight her, she would've probably become his partner, at least for as long as either one of them had.
I didn’t notice that! Wait. I thought it was just to keep level design consistent, but it was more than that. It also aligns with the blindfolds Yorha units wear. The blindfolds represent how Yorha units are blind to the truth, but with A2 not having one, she’s more calm and collected after realizing everything was pointless about the war. If you also played the Wise Machine sidequests, 9S’s psychological state worsens gradually and gets damaged. Both of the pods noticed this and Pod 042 obliged to hacking into 9S because Pod 042 and 153 were very concerned for his wellbeing. Even though 9S constantly rejected help from Pod 153, he still knew something was wrong with himself, but was so driven by revenge. TLDR: Nice analysis! ✌️😌
A2 really doesnt get the love she deserves. Everyone likes 2B cuz she's the most fappable one, others like 9S cuz they feel bad for him? or something i guess. Yet A2 gets ignored so much when she's the one that goes through the most emotional growth. How she starts off hating machines but then has to make that hard choice for Pascal, really hits hard. She deserved more playtime or at least more cutscenes
Much of the stories of A2 and 2B have to take place before the timeline of the game for the narrative of 9S. Also, I believe you're intentionally led to initially have a very negative perception of A2. She's a rogue and enemy of YoRHa who has killed several androids, and you even fight her as an enemy boss. She kills just about anything that crosses her path. But you can eventually start to learn her background of horrific trauma, loss, and betrayal that shaped her personality and attitudes, and absorbing 2B's memories appeared to trigger her gradual recovery of her "humanity." (or whatever equivalent androids have)
Sean Legghette There is no "true main character" in this game. 2B, 9S, and A2 are all the main characters in the game. One isn't more important to the story than the others. Just because 9S went from innocent to insane doesn't make him any more important than the others in the story.
If you really think about, how would you feel if you we’re sent on a mission and your Command you trusted abandoned you to your death with your allies. And then send Yorha units after you survived the trauma, to go kill you bc you know too much. What? You want A2 to let them kill her, even though they betrayed her. You want her to forgive her command. Shit, I would go rogue too.
Morishima Haruka Except for a little detail that they forgot to add the sweetness in 2b's voice when she talks to 9s after a few story missions and during some sidequests.
Certainly A2 is the most noble character in the game, I mean, 2B knows the truth, and doesn't mind even in her own feelings just to finish her duty, 9S turn into hate and revenge for feeling used. But A2 knew about she was for disposal since the beginning, and still help 2B and her final wish, and try to save 9S. She even sacrifice her self for everyone when for everybody she just was a wandering, forsaken and dangerous android

Here are some things that could have made this fight even better; -Special theme for 9s/A2 that differs (slighty) between choice OR -Allow for the level of 9S/A2 to be always slightly higher than yours, so you can replay the fight.
Honestly just done my second playthrough and I absolutely love this game. Just the story is unreal. It's like choosing between a2 and 9s is essentially choosing between love or hate essentially. You really can't help but feel for 9s at the end because he just doesn't care anymore. He's just so broken and full of hate that like he says just none of it matters.
Is that confirmed? Because honestly I'd assume it's been even earlier than that. He's been tangentially connected to the machine network since the events in the copied city.
I just finished the first light novel of Nier Automata and it was great...I almost cried.... chapter 6 till the last chapter is so freakin' emotional..
When it goes to the moment that I have to choose between A2 and 9S, I choose to fight as A2 without any hesitation because I wouldn't want to see 9S continue to be like the way he is. But still, it is just so heart wrenching for having to choose between them. The fight makes the whole thing even more sad..
This game is an absolute masterpiece. I don't think any other game has made me go through so many emotions throughout the entire playthrough. The voice acting, the music, the story, everything was just great!
I know that to get the true ending you have to fight A2. But I picked A2 because I really wanted to end 9S's suffering. I'm sorry that he had to die or at least be stopped, but though he has every right to be angry, he became the villain as he was.
Seeing as how A2 has turned herself away from hatred and anger after meeting Pascal is one of the best things I love about her. She viewed things more brighter throughout the C route and led her to be the true savior of mankind. This game is so special to me
This scene blew me away the first time I played it. The emotion from 9s, the ability to choose who I sided with, and the crazy hacking mechanics were all done so well!
As I went through this, 9S didnt get to hack me. Though several hack attempts were initiated I won each of them. I was disappointed at the lack of being hacked.
The first time I played this, I picked A2 INSTANTLY. I was under the assumption she was going to kill, him, and I figured it would be mercy at this point. The boy was simply too far gone.
What the fuck, I had no idea this game was this deep. I literally only played Ending 1 and said good game, I'll need to find time to play through the rest of the endings...
I'm surprised you were satisfied with finishing Ending A... When I defeated Eve and the credits play, I was so pissed because it was too short, so I went to google... And discover that there are 5 major endings. Playing as 9s was easier than 2b because of hacking abilities, but it was a lot of fun to play as A2 because she's like 2B but faster. I played Nier because of 2B's ass! Damn, I left it with a broken heart.
People in the comments saying people hated A2.. I found her cynical nature kind of relatable. I loved 9S too because I get it, I understand him. I loved 2B too and not cuz shes bootylicious but rather I understand how hard it is to fake it to make it. She acts cold toward 9S but not because she doesnt like him.. rather her duty forces to.
I honestly can't get a straight answer on this ending even after playing it myself, is 9S supposed to have survived it? I was told he lived in Ending C and E, but it seems like hes dead, and my save just keeps trying to trigger ending E, which starts by saying "All Yorha black boxes offline".
Stonecat92 Unit 2E, 9S, and A2's consciousness data were recovered by Pod 042 and 153. With the help of the pod network Pods 042 and 153 were able to commence repairs on units 2E, 9S, and possibly A2. The machine structure known as "The Tower" launched the remains of the machine network into space, which includes data necessary for the replication of machine life forms designated "Adam" and "Eve".
I'm kinda confused on ending c too, did 9s survived but kill himself at the end? I think that because of how his sword was reminded me of 2Bs grave at that flower cave.
Im glad I picked ending c. I found out ending d both died. Funny enough 9S died from stabbing A2 bc he fell on her sword. Makes sense he is literally unstable and unbalanced.
I think this is actually a 'bad' ending in a way, A2 destroys the missile/tower that was actually an arc with all the remaining YorHa android's memories hence the name meaningless code.
But thanks to A2 androids examined tower's ruins and discovered a truth about humanity. Who knows, maybe they will finally find their own life's purpose. So i think the best ending is C -> E. Androids find out the truth and three characters go back to life.
According to the stage play, C->E is the main ending indeed. 9S dies primarily because of the most of him was left in the now destroyed machine network as happened in routes A/B. Who cares of the Ark if it has N2 on board so is messed up anyway... Loved a _massive_ DOD3 reference here btw :)
I just noticed... "I never quite realised how beautiful this world is" It's the same quote... from the Mermaid boss. I know that the Mermaid it wasn't exist until Replicant but still...
poor Kyle McCarley pours his heart and soul into this role and people just think its yuri. Granted he said in an ama he was actually really honoured to be compared to yuri but doesnt think he sounds as identical to him as others.
Mam this fight is sick with all the hacking and the use of abilities... But through the two playthroughs I did, I had done all the side quests so even on hard 9S was a pushover. When you're over leveled it really takes the kick out of the cutscenes too.
Super Ultimate RUclipsr 2B or 2E was a unit designed with the sole purpose of killing YoRHa units that discovered the truth. Due to 9S' cunning, the commander knew he'd find out the truth eventually, and had him paired with 2B so when the time came, she could kill him... over and over and over. It's implied she's been partnered with him and killed him many times before the start of the game, and during the actual game finds herself unable to kill him due to the feelings she has for him. Remember the ending of route a, when she breaks down in tears and says, "Why does it always end like this?" That was supposed to be a hint that this isn't the first time she's had to kill 9S.
LightAndDarkMdness02 ok can you explain the final words right before the boss fight....9S: either confirm the death of myself or unit A2*....A2 died before ?
after the end in C . they show you a sword in a Forest , are we supposed go find it ?? and that talk about going to talk to a lady that will tell you something. ?!?!?
Tbh...this ending...it just shows that A2 isn't that bad as she seems at first glance. She literally does everything to save 9S who just kills her at first moment he gets in ending D. Playing this ending first, makes ending D even more tragic. Anyway. Anime is released now. I hope. I hope it won't end the same way as In ending D...or C or...tbh I don't want to see A2 2B or 9S to die. I heard anime ending will be different than game after all.
I remember trying to delete all my data for the true ending it never happened because my account was banned and I couldn’t do the final boss without help

You really can't help but feel for 9s at the end because he just doesn't care anymore. He's just so broken and full of hate that like he says just none of it matters.
"shut up" must be a running gag, 2B, 9S and A2 constantly lash out x)
Niklas Nordbäck Shut Up!
It's official I'm in love with A2 ❤
anyone would
ZeroBeys she's cute and amazing!
yep, yep she is
***** Yes, 2B was the best doll for me
***** Thanks for you too, dear Yorha, may the gods be blessing you
The fact that you can choose who to play as is amazing to me.
For me it was horrible, I almost burst into tears when I saw that I had to choose which of the two I should kill TT_TT
@@e254ep2 I chose 9s
best ending
@@e254ep2 Who did you choose?
@@tonytan5945 I choosed to fight against 9s
yeah best ending
@@e254ep2 Same, didn't look like it would end well for 9S either way. Glad she didn't end up killing him.
9S really lived long enough to see himself become the villain... This boss fight was truly a duel of the fates
i love this dudes voice. its so powerful.
Other than the true ending this is my favourite....Cherami Leigh never fails to make me cry with her emotional lines
8:19 makes me want to cry 😥
"I never quite realized... how beautiful this world is." T_T
Fun fact : 9S has actually been infected with the Logic Virus since the Soul Box.
Is that confirmed? Because honestly I'd assume it's been even earlier than that. He's been tangentially connected to the machine network since the events in the copied city.
"You killed 2B. That's all we need to kill each other."
no pls don't kill each other
2019 anyone?
U know I m alone
Just got here, so glad I am
i'm here lad
howdy
FF 14.
im here
I just finished the first light novel of Nier Automata and it was great...I almost cried.... chapter 6 till the last chapter is so freakin' emotional..
Man Kyke McCarley poured his soul in 9S. Best voice acting I have heard in a long time.
What's cool is when the BGM turns 8bit when hacking.
Every other song has an 8-bit version when hacking as well
When it goes to the moment that I have to choose between A2 and 9S, I choose to fight as A2 without any hesitation because I wouldn't want to see 9S continue to be like the way he is.
But still, it is just so heart wrenching for having to choose between them. The fight makes the whole thing even more sad..
This game is an absolute masterpiece. I don't think any other game has made me go through so many emotions throughout the entire playthrough. The voice acting, the music, the story, everything was just great!
9s was a harder boss compared to A2.
It's 2020 and i still watch this end
For me it's the best end
I know that to get the true ending you have to fight A2. But I picked A2 because I really wanted to end 9S's suffering. I'm sorry that he had to die or at least be stopped, but though he has every right to be angry, he became the villain as he was.
Why didn’t A2 just tell 9S that she had to kill 2B because she was infected?
9s would’ve just ignored it, and seen it as another lie
More likely he was to angry to listen still though I agree with you.
tbf in the novel 9s already knew that 2b was infected, it's not like a2 explaining would do any help
because he was infected
0:35
Turns out not only that server is real, is actually very important for the revival of the Human Race
they're dead. no revive
Seeing as how A2 has turned herself away from hatred and anger after meeting Pascal is one of the best things I love about her. She viewed things more brighter throughout the C route and led her to be the true savior of mankind. This game is so special to me
wdym true savior of mankind
"As long as there are two people left in the world, someone is going to want someone dead."
- Sniper.
All the music in this whole series of games (Darkengard saga included) it's a true masterpiece
This scene blew me away the first time I played it. The emotion from 9s, the ability to choose who I sided with, and the crazy hacking mechanics were all done so well!
I just realized in this fight 9S is wearing the blindfold and still has his normal hand
9S life is so tragic he lost 2b who him loves so much, Only those who have felt this pain know how much it hurts
As I went through this, 9S didnt get to hack me. Though several hack attempts were initiated I won each of them. I was disappointed at the lack of being hacked.
The moment 9S saw 2B's death he became eve too they became crazy about the loss of their love one that they wanted to end it all
The first time I played this, I picked A2 INSTANTLY. I was under the assumption she was going to kill, him, and I figured it would be mercy at this point. The boy was simply too far gone.
9S full Shinji Ikari in that point of the game,
What the fuck, I had no idea this game was this deep.
@@JoshuaESantos311 typical nier, at least from what I read. Their previous nier titles are also incredibly sad
@@iLiekLemonade you finish the game now?
@@daffanier Nope haven't had the time with it cuz of Uni, but I'll finish it during sem break and keep you updated!
@@iLiekLemonade Ok, i'm waiting for your thoughts about the game!
Stonecat92 ending E is a follow up to ending D
But u have to finish ending C and D to get access to E
Same thing in the original nier
muhanna basalem sounds fucking fun!
I'm kinda confused on ending c too, did 9s survived but kill himself at the end? I think that because of how his sword was reminded me of 2Bs grave at that flower cave.
I can feel A2's presence and I love it. 🤩
9S is the new Inuart
Rick Ross Replace Furiae, with 2B. "2B, 2B, 2B, 2B, 2B...."
God but I hated inuart and liked 9S, he’s much more interesting
I love this game so much I just finished c literally shed a tear 😢
My god. It's just a game but why do I feel really nervous of those really high platforms they're walking/running/fighting on. XD
I thought I was the only one lmao
Hardest Choice In video games history
Choose’d ending C or A2 for my first playthrough cuz 9s went Wacko
Not really
Just complited the game im i the only one who cried?
How to get this ending???i have A,W,G but i wish to unlock this ending
@@gold1861 after you get ending where 2b is with 9s its not a real ending keep playing till 2b dies and 9s fights a2
What's that OST playing during their conversation at the start before the fight?
Even though 9S is weak compared to the likes of 2B or A2, he still put up quite a fight.
Anyone knows the background song when A2 hacks into 9S brain? please I'm desperate
Steven Wijaya Chant, same one that played during model E side quest
It's called *Mourning*
I just noticed...
"I never quite realised how beautiful this world is"
It's the same quote... from the Mermaid boss. I know that the Mermaid it wasn't exist until Replicant but still...
5:05 thats the "im gonna f u up bad" look
I forgot Yuri lowenthal is actually a great voice actor.
Not Lowenthal.
it's not Yuri
poor Kyle McCarley pours his heart and soul into this role and people just think its yuri. Granted he said in an ama he was actually really honoured to be compared to yuri but doesnt think he sounds as identical to him as others.
My apologies. I found out it was McCarley. He is a great voice actor.
Sean Legghette Yeah it's a shame. Lowenthal in an AMA admitted it's because voicing in Anime doesn't pay a lot of money.
the pods were the real hero, protecting the world by protecting their androids, and they got no recognition.. the pods are basically batmen
Mam this fight is sick with all the hacking and the use of abilities... But through the two playthroughs I did, I had done all the side quests so even on hard 9S was a pushover.
When you're over leveled it really takes the kick out of the cutscenes too.
I'm a little confused about the whole 2b killing 9s thing
Super Ultimate RUclipsr
2B or 2E was a unit designed with the sole purpose of killing YoRHa units that discovered the truth.
LightAndDarkMdness02
Ah.
I see. Thanks
LightAndDarkMdness02 ok can you explain the final words right before the boss fight....9S: either confirm the death of myself or unit A2*....A2 died before ?
KoTheSaVage
He didn't want the pod pissing him off during the fight
Super Ultimate RUclipsr so he was talking too the Pod...I'm still confused
5:06 "Goddamnit, that's the third time already !"
Killing one of them will make the other happy. This is why I prefer this ending.
If you are coming here from FFXIV, looks like this is the most likely ending which leads into that...
i cry every single fucking time
I just got childhoods end
My fight lasted less than ten minutes, because I was level 62. I wondered if there was extra dialogue but unfortunately there wasn’t, unlike Ending D
How easy it is to beat 9S as A2 in comparison to vice versa just goes to show that 9S was never meant to be put in situations like this. Truly tragic
my all time fav ending in any video game
after the end in C . they show you a sword in a Forest , are we supposed go find it ?? and that talk about going to talk to a lady that will tell you something. ?!?!?
Alexen Marrero De La Osa after ending c u get access to A2 back story by talking to anemone
muhanna basalem so after I started the game again, I just go talk to her and I get to do the story
You need the one with machine head in resistance camp. She will sell achievments. Yes.
muhanna basalem its not after ending c is during route c
Alexen Marrero De La Osa sadly u only get to read it
But it's quite deep as u understand why A2 sacrificed herself
This shit went harder thsn anything ever.
Man seeing this and comparing it into part 2 opening from the anime it totally make sense now
in ending D they both die i made the wrong choice
im am crying right now its so sad
you say you'll fix everything and you leave me to your FCKING POD?!
i'm just wondering how these guys were able to play if this game haven not been released yet. do you guys know how ??
roberto jose gallo zambrano if you import it from Japan it has the English version on the disc
tea z thank you brother...!that makes sense
im not a "brother" or male
tea z my apologies.
I think every game Platinum Games is first released in Japan but already with English to choose from the options
I love how the last battle soundtrack is literally "The sound of the end"
It's well chosen and I like the soundtrack anyways Lmao.
I remember trying to delete all my data for the true ending it never happened because my account was banned and I couldn’t do the final boss without help
This animated us going to be nuts
Like: Choices A2
Comment: Choises 9S
This fight by far is the best fight in all of the entertainment industry both are right yet both are wrong
Neil Druckman should have taken notes from this game...Brutal , sad and not a one sided story where the hero is just the hero, fuck TLOU2
Did 9S survive? And what does the sword at the end mean?
They dont need to fight anymore.
@@johnsilver6396 Ah okay
