How Sinker/Ram EDM Works: Part 1

Carl Sommer, president of Reliable EDM, shows how ram, sinker, or plunge EDM works. He describes the sparking process, how the electrode erodes materials by means of spark erosion, and what transpires inside the cut. He also speaks about the power supply, servo mechanism, chiller, filter, C-axis, and the various angles ram machines can cut.
Sommer, president of the largest EDM job shop in North America, has also co-authored with his son Steve, a mechanical engineer, Complete EDM Handbook. The handbook is free at their website.

Fascinating. I worked as a tool and die maker 30 years ago. The shop I worked at had an EDM machine. It was rather new at the time. I really enjoyed learning how it worked and making the graphite electrodes.. Your videos are fantastic. You explain the concept and process really well.
