  • Ever since Donald Trump’s election in 2016, the media and public figures have been sounding alarms about an alleged “crisis of disinformation,” a panic that was supercharged during the Covid-19 pandemic. And now, a vast “fact-checking” industry has emerged to combat these undesirable ideas.
    But what these companies are really doing is attempting to censor political views they find unacceptable.

      I stopped reading the Times in 2017, after 20 years of it being my go to source. The lexicon shifted so rapidly; belying the Times own bias while at the same time all the Times seemed to talk about was BIAS everywhere else but themselves.

      Except we don’t see them going against the WSJ, Forbes or The Weekly Standard. Your point is not without merit, but the level of dangerous misinformation has been coming from the established right wing media, not the left. If liberals had invaded the Capitol, killed cops, and MSNBC was defending them, then you’d have more of a point. BTW, I’m independent, but I find the left’s rhetoric to be annoying and enervating. The rightwing rhetoric has been dangerous.

      @@thesilkpainter That sounds like the battle cry of somebody who wants to pointlessly argue for the fun of arguing.
      I'm not sure where you live, but I have had the freedom to say pretty much whatever I want, but there are consequences for saying things that people don't want to hear. Freedom doesn't mean freedom from all consequences. What it means it that you would be allowed to say things with very little legal consequence; that your right to speech is protected. In some nations, you legally cannot say anything bad about the leader of the country. In my country you can.

    When I read stuff I disagree with I think of the reasons I disagree. Sometimes I change my opinion because I see a point-of-view I didn't see before. I love it when I'm proven wrong - it makes me feel alive!
    We live in a society of zombies: people who are asleep-walking through life. They follow the rules and processes completely blind to what's actually going on around them. This attitude has brought airliners down, as an example.
    Debate is healthy and human. As a black man I would give my life to defend a white supremacist's right to say what they say. I'm being sincere. I would not offer my life to defend censors. Freedom is everything.
    What we need is solid values. Honor, integrity, work, kindness and compassion. Love. We don't need censorship. It is the tool of judgement and hatred.

      I agree! White supremacy and other kinds of racism aren't just evil, they're illogical, indefensible, and don't stand up to criticism. But we have to have free speech in order to show how wrong those ideas are. Just silencing racists doesn't stop racism.
      Sunshine is the best disinfectant!

    Respectfully, I DISAGREE about the NY Times. As an Indian American, I am very offended by that paper allowing Muslim authors to make derogatory opinion articles about India and the Indian government. It was 1990, and Muslims in Kashmir went on a rampage of genocide against Hindus and either killed or expelled most Hindus from Kashmir which had been their home for thousands of years. The western media like the NY Times didn't have much to say. Go back 500 years, and the first Mughal king Babur destroyed a Hindu temple and built a mosque. It was only after the BJP government came into power that Hindus were allowed to rebuild the temple that the Muslims destroyed. Oh my, that surely strongly displeased the NY Times. The paper continues to be anti-India. I wrote to the management and told them I was canceling my subscription which I had maintained for years. And as to Public Radio and PBS TV, the Republicans have been on the warpath against them for years now. They think they are "biased" whereas Fox isn't. Hmmm, did I miss Fox TV on your disinformation list? No, I didn't. You missed Fox? What a shame.

    • @MJM17
      @MJM17 Месяц назад

      Fox is absolutely biased but it’s a private company. The reason Republicans criticize NPR and PBS is because they’re (partially) funded by the government and should therefore be an unbiased source for all citizens across the political spectrum.
