The 20-year-old Israeli singer sits down for her first in-depth interview since performing amid death threats and jeers: “I turned it into my power.”
Amid the Israel-Hamas War, a campaign was mounted to boycott Eurovision for allowing Israel to participate. Over 1,000 Swedish musicians, including the pop star Robyn, signed a petition calling for Israel’s exclusion. In Finland, 1,300 artists signed a similar petition. Bars here in New York announced they wouldn’t screen the competition in protest. Israel was forced to revise their song after its original entry, “October Rain,” was deemed too political by the EBU. This was all before anyone took to the stage.
Despite calls for boycott, 163 million people tuned in to Eurovision this year to watch Golan and the other performers. She placed fifth, and snagged the number two spot when it came to the public vote.
I sat down with Golan in New York, in her first in-depth interview since the competition, to talk about how she handled the pressure of being the most-hated performer in Eurovision history before ever singing a note, how it feels to represent Israel since October 7, and what comes next.

I think the same thing each time I meet a young person from Israel or Ukraine. I think it’s the compulsory military service. Teenagers and 20 year olds in israel seem so much more mature and well adjusted than kids in the UK and Western Europe. It’s like not having real problems has stunted the growth and maturity of our kids.

She said if Eden wasn’t there, she’d have a better chance to win. Eden’s voice is up there with the Streisands and the Dions of the world. No way the Irish or Greek entrant could claim that. Joost is a piece of work. My money is on him being outed as another Ellen DeGeneres, who has this wacky dancing happy-go-lucky "give love and joy to all" persona that, at best, is overcompensating for something. At best, he has acute anger management issues. At worst, he's something out of a horror flick.
That's my takeaway of everything I've seen about him.
Regardless, he didn't force Eden to do anything. He just made a noise during the press conference that did nothing but reflect negatively on him. Eden did her thing regardless.
Not Israeli, but thanks for your comment. When I see the rabid mobs shouting "justice for joost", it doesn't feel like a bunch of enthusiasts doing their thing. It feels like townsfolk hunting for a witch. (Nowadays, though, you can screech that you're a witch and get cheers, so...... whatever. Ireland's tears at Israel's success are a contender for my favorite moment of the whole debacle.) so every comment about Eden that just focuses on her and her performance and song is so refreshing to hear, especially from those who don't have a vested interest (other than possessing a human soul)

@@nicholasdemetriades3480If she was sick or depressed, she should have behaved like an adult and withdrawn from the competition instead of acting like a petulant spoilt brat and reflecting poorly on her country.
As for Israel, there have been Jews living in that country for 3700 years. They were colonised by the Romans and Ottomans and many were displaced to other countries. A minority remained in Israel. In 1948 Israel was returned to the Jewish people and they will not be removed again. You seem to be unaware of the meaning of 'Israeli" vs "Jewish". Twenty percent of the Israeli population are Arabs.

Eden Golan was a Pearl in Malmö who coped with the pressure and showed the world how Music really lives in her. That everyone was against Israel at this competition is insane, but Eden showed them all with her Strength and voice that they are all wrong. I will never forget her, her charm and lovely personality. Everything is so strange in our world today that we need more people like her. She is my Blue Angel wherever she is, and I hope to hear more songs through her soon. Delle in Sweden

Yes we were there for you Eden, first time I ever voted for anyone in Eurovision, like many others I voted for you 20 times and then in the final 20 times again, and not only for your beautiful performance and the music but also to help you and your country who were being bullied! Keep being who you are, you're amazing! 💙🤍

nothing but respect to her. it's tough standing onstage and singing live for millions while so many people brainwashed people can''t differentiate between theyre hate for jews/the government and a performer from Israel.

I'm from Malmö. This is the most embarrassing thing... I am so sorry, Eden, I am so sorry, Israel. We are many normal and sane people who love you here. I hope country votes helped show that a little bit. They had to have snipers on the roof tops in the arena area for protection because of these loud terrorists in our city... The SWEDES in Sweden are with you...
When I saw the clips from social media (where you could hear the boos - we couldn't on TV) I started bawling. I will never forget the night my city tried their absolute hardest to break this girl and she stood up strong, smiling. Inspiring class act. Eden Golan won that night.

It was really disappointing that Eden was treated the way she was. She is a 20-year old girl who represented her country. Think people forget that she didn’t start the war, nor is she a representative of the government.
People also forget that this is a song contest and is apolitical. The fact that Eurovision fans booed all the performances, I think was appalling. Like I say she’s 20, no one should go through this, never mind a 20-year old.
It was disturbing to see her delegation preparing her with boos whilst she practised her song. How on earth did it come to that?
Hurricane is a stunning song and she performed it beautifully. Still listening to this song, one of my faves from this years contest.

Btw, Israel didn't start the war - I'm stating that because your comment implied it did. That aside, I agree with your comment.

Having just watched this video I realised that what Eden Golan did by showing up singing and facing a hostile audience was of itself amazing with such grace and style. However even more than that Jews and Israelis understood that by coming 2nd in the telephone vote was that people around the world were with Israel unlike the small body of mean minded judges and contestants and that was a huge gift to us.

The Polish journalist’s question was victim blaming, not surprising as Poles have always been antisemitic, not surprised he was rude enough to accuse you of causing other people to be in danger considering the ProHamas crowd was threatening your safety and life.

Thank you so much for doing this interview with Eden. As a big Eurovision fan and a supporter of Israel in the contest, as much as I want the contest to remain apolitical, but I am so grateful that the Israeli delegation didn't withdraw (and EBU didn't succumb to the noises to ban Israel) because it is so important for Israel to show the world they exist.
And also, Israel could not have asked for a better representative because Eden is just so amazing and graceful despite all the hatred she got. Her tenacity is going to get her go far. I am so proud of her and I am sure Israelis and Jews around the world share the same sentiments.
