- Orson Welles and Oliver Reed descend on Merv Griffin on April 25, 1980. They discuss an unfinished comedy they made together called "Rider," and a surprisingly sober Reed plugs his movie "Dr. Heckle and Mr. Hype."

He was always an arrogant dick, but he was usually drunk. Here he isn't drunk here and you can see his intelligence and verbal skills. He's still an arrogant dick. Lol.
He was still great at the end in Gladiator, unfortunately his arrogance was still there and he died of alcohol poisoning challenging a group of UK sailors to a drinking contest in a pub on location. Very sad and embarrassing end to such a talent.

Met Ollie and Hurricane Higgins (snooker player) walking into Ulster Television Studio in Belfast mid nineties, both were drunk! said hi to Oliver and he said "piss off sonny" but threw me a smile and a wink!! I just laughed and just loved the guy, favourite movie as a kid was Hannibal Brooks, we'll never see his like again.

Wow! Orson Welles and Oliver Reed. Two exceptiona actors who know and practiced their craft while being very aware of where they stood in their time by knowing their pasts and history.
You just don't see such interviews these days. It's not about the glitter with these two gentlemen.

CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT has been hailed as having one of the greatest battle sequences in cinema history; TOUCH OF EVIL begins with an opening tracking-shot that is like film-ballet - and has been ripped off continuously through the decades.; Truffaut said CONFIDENTIAL REPORT was one of his favorite films that nobody knows about.............Orson was so much more than CK. That's like saying SGT. PEPPER was the only great album the Beatles released.

I really love how spontaneous and vivacious talk shows of the seventies and eighties were. Modern talk shows seem too packaged and artificial. Orson was uncharacteristically quiet in this interview. It seemed like his mind was somewhere else.
I agree, watch this or Parkinson and you get real conversations and insights, watch kimmel or Norton and you get sycophancy

Yup ~ Orson the sober fellow of the two seemed very much on his guard set up, as he was, against a known drunk of possible uncontrolled blathering Orson might have to parry with Orwellian muster ~ although Ollie Reed does seem to be more uncharacteristically coherent with the two, Wells and Reed, managing to play each other off with ping-pongs of contrived controlled repartee.
Watch Graham Norton - a breath of fresh air.
This is amazing! Oliver Reed AND Orson Wells? Great conversation. We can really see how intelligent and thoughtful Red could be. He was not just a drunken fool.

People are easily bored now due to cell phones and social media. Letterman is and was amazing but the real last type of this conversational format was imo Tom Snyder who was on after (and directly because of) Dave.
Merv is like the announcer at a tag team wrestling event. He introduces the guests and gets out of the way when they go at it. When things get out of hand he interrupts and changes the subject. Very clever.
Oliver Reed was fantastic in Women in Love, Triple Echo, Oliver! The Devils etc SO lovely to see good old fashioned aura and charisma informed by intellect and native wit. What have we lost?
Don't forget - The Three musketeers and The Four Musketeers. Also, Gladiator.
@@Inglese001 3 and 4 were work - Gladiator was a long overdue tribute/ performance/ Reed in his day would have had that portly Aussie gentleman's role and made mincemeat of him. I just wish we would have got the ending of gladiator that Ridley wanted ...reed was supposed to go out fighting like the old gladiator he was but unfortunately he died .Might I add after arm wrestling half of a pub and drinking plenty .I'm sad that he died because he he still had some great performances in him ...but it seemed a fitting death and one he would probably laugh about if there was a heaven .

Why listening Reed and Welles is a great pleasure? Their English sounds amazing.
Reed was already an accomplished hellraiser when he met and befriended Keith Moon, of whom he said, "I knew the way to the bar, but not to the bizarre. His shadow is always on the sunny side of the street with me, always, because of that path that he showed me."
My goodness me. This is spun gold ! Notice when Oliver gets asked who is the greatest actor... I bet he and Orson exchanged a look... They both knew . Its all about the craft... and the cinematic theatricals. And the tinsel and dust......
One tidbit Orson and Ollie failed to mention about the trouble they had getting paid by producers in Greece: Not only were they not paid - they were stuck with an outrageous hotel bill. Upon learning of this, Oliver Reed promptly went down to the hotel nightclub/disco in the basement and proceeded to smash/rip apart the place with his bare hands. Welles said everyone was standing around, mouth agape, in awe of Reed's violence (including the police who were called). Ollie simply walked out of the place and no one dared getting in his way...
I could not decide whether Orson and Oliver actually like each other. Certainly mutual respect.

But to your point, I did pick up a bit of frostiness and disconnection from Reed in this interview; apparently Oliver had a talent for messing with people to the degree that it was impossible to know if he was putting you on or not. A Sexy Beast for sure. You may want to check out "My Lunches with Orson" if you haven't already - it's a fascinating read and chock-full of anecdotes including the aforementioned "Greek Tragedy" haha

I miss Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas. Great daytime hosts.
I always remember Merv on at 8:30 pm in the 70's. It was a 90 minute show I recall. Was there a time his was a daytime show? Maybe in the 60's. Mike Douglas, along with Dinah Shore, were back-to-back afternoon shows I remember. Great shows, all of them.
Oliver is a damm good actor and an honest man. He also has a temper and will not shy away from a confrontation. Or son is more social but has those same qualities. Today’s so called actors seem to spend their time looking at press clippings and going to the gym. It all depends on what one prefers. I love these guys and gals of the past because they move me in many ways but with today’s celebs they put me to sleep and I wake up with a migraine.

The film project of which OW and OR speak is Rider (which was never completed), and the referenced producer/director is Andrew Sinclair (1925-2019).
Reed one of the very few people that could over shadow Welles at least for a few minutes .
Orson was never overshadowed unless he choose to let someone else have center stage. Reed seems fairly sober for a change.

This is the only interview I’ve seen with Olly where he’s not a belligerent drunk.
I saw him interviewed by Max Headroom and as Max was straight with Oliver the interview was fine. I also saw a more typical interview, playing up to his reputation, by Des O’Connor, and it was awful.Des sniggering like a school boy as he asked provocative questions in anticipation of some sort of reaction.

I met Oliver Reed in a hotel bar in Doncaster, England, approx 1991. It was 8.00am and we were coming down for breakfast. Oliver was totally drunk with facial cuts and abrasions. It was sad to see him like that.

Such an interesting contriving of theatrical toings-and-froings of 'congratulatory' and 'you're the greatest' between Wells and Reed with a brief bizarre bubbling of the cartoonish sweet foreign-speaking wedding-gown dressed girl. Who was she? Reed seeming to be relatively sober in this USA show of yore was impressive with his Russian history on Peter The Great anecdotes of which of Peter's time in London were detailed and charming for a drunk to so eloquently relate. Loved it. After visiting and staying in London Tzar Peter went back too his homeland and built the mightily impressive St. Petersburg 'the Venice of Russia'. Despite present Ukraine situation I believe as a UK citizen Britain and Russia are linked in and within inviolable histories, and should continue to remain so. 🙂

You obviously don’t understand british humour, Oliver wasn’t being nasty to Charo it was simply a bit of humorous sarcasm that a lot of American people think of as nastiness or disrespecting someone. It was nothing of the kind, he said it in sarcastic jest.
