Android uses RCS by default not SMS. But both iPhone and Android have the capability to use SMS which they both do use when interacting with one another. Hence the drop in quality. The only true way to get rid of the drop on quality is for Android to have access to iMessage ( which Apple will never allow) or Apple to adopt RCS (which they can easily do, but probably won't) just use a third party app like Whatsapp

Does the android user have to have an icloud account to see it? The android user got the link but couldn't open it without an icloud account.
