    Excellent video - worked like a treat. Only tricky stage was replacing the metal clip for window handle at end. I stuck a small piece of plastic (instead of metal strip in video) and this worked fine.

    Just picked up a Punto with the same fault. Back door jammed. Could not open the door (child lock was actived, so inside lever not working) until I watched your video showing the sharp tug on the door. Now door is open and I can effect this repair. Many thanks!

    great video. But i wonder, could you not just remove the door card and super glue a metal block on top of that part, without taking anything else apart?

    Thank you for your video! I follwed every step and the problem has been fixed! But another issue appeared...
    When I close the door now and press central locking the door will be locked properly but when press central unlocking button again the door is still locked. And the only way to open it is from inside.
    What could go wrong?

    Thank you very much for this video. Now I know what the issue is - wear on the (plastic) operating cam - I'll fix both my infuriating back doors!
    PS For anybody else with this problem, it's not a question of giving the mechanism 'more room' but less. (Since the contact point has lost material it needs that wear 'putting back' - hence the cable tie (or a shim of suitable thickness stuck to the appropriate surface).
    PPS It is possible (on my Punto) to open the doors when they're stuck - by pushing hard on the door just above and to the rear of the handle, and opening it just as you take the pressure off. Works 95% of the time for me. I'm guessing that the push takes part of the latching force off the latch, and so allows the worn cam to do its job - even though it's not applying its full design force due to the wear.

    • @michaelwarwick9930
      @michaelwarwick9930 4 года назад +2

      I tackled one sticking door today - and glued a plastic shim to the top of the latch operating lever to eradicate most of the 2mm clearance between it and the handle's 'cam'. And...the door still wouldn't open. Ouch!
      (NB By 'cam' I mean the 'nodding donkey' lever on the outside half of the handle mechanism; the thing that activates a second nodding donkey lever on the inner half...that then pulls a short cable (about 100mm long) to open the door latch.)
      After a bit of investigation - with the reconfigured handle refitted - I realised that the reason the closed door wouldn't reopen from outside was that it wasn't really closed at all...so the handle wasn't properly operating the latch. The door felt closed, and looked closed, but wasn't. I'm talking 1 to 2 millimetres, by the way.
      Proof of this: I moved the door strike plate (a rectangular hoop on a backplate, screwed to the doorframe) 2 mil 'outboard' - and voila! - the door opened no problem! I then moved the DSP back again and the door wouldn't open. This explains why my 'pushing' fix works; the click I was hearing on pushing at the 'closed' door was the door actually closing fully. Ta-da!
      I therefore found that if I SLAMMED the door closed, it would reopen from outside every time; but if I just pushed it closed or closed it with a 'soft slam' - it would never. I'm not in the habit of slamming car doors, so I never previously realised that this was happening. (As an aside, these millimetres I'm talking about don't make the 'door open' warning light come on.)
      So...
      What I believe it comes down to is a combination of a) miniscule wear of (predominantly plastic) components, and b) the way the door latch mechanism is designed. It uses multiple 'uneven' levers (i.e. designed so that a very small movement somewhere creates a larger movement somewhere else - and vice versa. The problem with this is that without compensating for wear, tiny lever movements that are supposed to (always) magnify movement eventually stop doing so.
      Use (i.e. wear) causes slack to develop in every component of the door locking mechanism...and in the end one has to do something pretty drastic to compensate for (i.e. get rid of) all that slack in one fell swoop.
      In Rick's case someone had already glued a 3mm thick chunk of metal to the 2nd nodding donkey, but evidently it still wasn't enough; Rick had to add the cable tie (with curvature, another 3mm?) to get it to work. I had a 2mm gap between the nodding donkeys so I added 2mm of plastic shim and it didn't solve the problem. (I think the short handle-to-lock cable is a major weakness, because it's not a Bowden cable and isn't tensioned either.)
      To close, I got the door to open via a different fix...though ironically it left the door looking as though it wasn't latched closed - when in fact it was. I prefer Rick's solution, but if you can handle your door not looking perfectly shut, it'll save a lot of time. :-)
      Drop a line if you find an easier fix to this perennial Fiat Punto problem. I'll post this on the Fiat Forum too.
      And remember...don't be a Covidiot!

    Hi. Would this procedure work for the front drivers door? On my punto I can open the door from outside when I press the central locking to unlock. But to shut the door I have to hold open the inside door handle and slam the door. So when leaving the car I have to get out the car. Walk to the passenger side. Climb in the car and lean across to close the drivers door. Would the process shown in this video fix that. Or do you think I have to buy a new door mechanism? Thanks.

    This a great reference for how to get into the door and access the lock. However looking at the mechanism I'm not sure your fix is the best way to do it. I reckon the problem is that the cable from the handle mechanism to the latch is slightly too long so what I did was make up a small C-shaped piece of ~1mm steel wire and twisted the cable once through it to effectively shorten it. Works perfectly.

    • @Litesnip2022
      @Litesnip2022 5 лет назад

      Chris Alger I have same problem, it’s defo the cable that’s to long, what did you use to shorten the cable? I’ve tried a L shape piece of pipe it worked but it’s starting to play up again, just wondered what you bought to shorten the cable

    • @andreasvukman
      @andreasvukman 4 года назад +3

      @@Litesnip2022 If you want to do it properly you have to take out the whole door handle mechanism. On the part the author of this video left inside there is a screw that regulates the 'tightness' of the mechanism. You just have to tighten the screw clockwise and voilá, your problem is solved and back door opens normally from the outside. No dirty hacks. Obviously, many car mechanics would rather replace the whole door handle mechanism than to tighten a simple screw. Interestingly, even Fiat car mechanics don't know anything about this screw and they blame Fiat for the (Grande) Punto back door handle problem.

      No, just folow these instructions. I just did my back door today. I couldn't find a thick cable tie, but it worked with a thinner one.
      If your back door doesn't open, you cannot get it through the MOT. This video inspired my to try it myself.
      It took a while but I managed it and the door opens now. Just one cable tie.

    it works for my car but there is a problem. when i lock all the doors by key it doesnt open from outside. i have to open doors from inside first. if i open it from inside then it becomes able to open from outside allways until i lock the car by key again. i search it and someone says i put too much thick material over that plastic thing and i should use a thinner something. i will try it too.
