Wish we had it here in America Well, honestly, wish I could move to France. I sure hope the UK & Europe gets their 💩 together and protect themselves from my country 😢
I think Renault have aced this one. I have been driving for 30 odd years and never owned a French vehicle, and if I was inclined to get a EV runabout (I’m not) I would consider this one. Relatively affordable, looks cool and has had a lot of positive reviews. Thanks for the review Pete.
i hear what you're saying....and i get it....BUT there will be quite a lot of folks out there for whom the small battery, small range, cheaper one will be perfect, i.e people that only potter around town a few miles a day maybe go open road to the next town 10 miles away etc and can come home and charge in their driveway as required etc, for them, its new car/price perfection. sidenote, i'm 3 weeks into my 1st ever Renault...a Scenic Alpine, 87kw, love it, makes me want to go for a drive just for the hell of it
So I am no lover of EVs, but this car looks good, runs well, is properly priced and is the first one to actually appeal. Brilliant move by Renault and an example to all. I'm sure it will sell well.
Renault and its design team have got back to producing modern fun cars with a retro feel. The R5 is the EV I’d buy it just put a smile on my face every time I got in it.
How refreshing to see an interesting EV. As a second car it’d be something I would genuinely consider. Well done Renault, it’s everything the electric Mini isn’t. Good video 👍
Great review, great car I have the new Scenic EV which is very good and lots of people comment on the styling inside and out. Considering the R5 for the Mrs as her car goes back in early April.
I wonder if a change of tyres would do away with the Torque steering and possibly reduce wheel spin. Knowing how rough that bit of road by the Open Air Museum is I was impressed by how the suspension dealt with the bumps. The advice to go for the larger battery version makes sense. 200+ miles is a good break point in the search for mileage, ask your self how often you drive more than 200 miles in a normal day, you can always fill up at under 2 pence per mile at home!
Hi ped I have to say after see your video when you you were at the press launch I fell in love as well I do hope you got a picture in the dream garage keep up your great work thanks James
I've configured the Techno version, large battery in Pop Green with the black roof. Just over £27K, so competitive in the EV sector. My concern surrounds real world range, which we all know is inflated by manufacturers.
I think Renault have knocked it out of the park with this, and I haven't owned a French car since a POS 206 GTi 25 years ago! Price point is great. It''s the only thing that I'd consider to replace our BMW i3....... 👍👍👍
11:44 I tend to look at 2 or 3 year old EV’s.. we got our Zoe ze50 for £14500 when it was less than 2 years old sub 9k miles on the clock on a 0% pcp deal..
I bought my Model 3 Performance with 500hp, 3s 0-60, 11.5 1/4 mile time, with 22k miles on odometer for just £35k. Paying the same price for 150hp little hot hatch is mental.
I couldn't live with the minimal rear room and small boot but if it gets more people into EVs then great. If anyone said to me you could have an R5 or a Mini it would be the R5
Once again a very good review Sir Peter. I think if I needed one it would be the one to go for. Such a shame Renault are not putting a ICE in it 😂. Now for the chastisement, you are on the way to a demotion from Sir Peter to just Peter, it’s been 3 weeks since a Mid Week 180, it’s what you are famous for come on we need a regular fix of the 180 please 👌
Looks brilliant and a very compelling price point. At last re name of an iconic car that resembles the original, unlike the Ford Capri... Will be interesting to see how it sells in the UK. Hopefully we'll see them on the road.
I love the R5 design wise and it’s great to hear your enthusiasm for how it drives too. Are they doing a GT version? This car with 250-300 bhp would be mental. That said, that would kill the range and I suppose there’s only so big a battery you can stick in one of these.
I'm not a fan of evs Sure they make sense in cities & for short drives But they are an absolute nightmare on long distances But I am also a big fan of the old Renault 5 had a fair few GT TURBOS in my time & I have to say I do actually like this R5 Looks really good Bit it would be even better with a petrol engine or even a hybrid Battery for round towns & petrol for the longer drives Although I do prefer the alpine does look better with the front fogs
Most people do under 15 miles a day, so unless you're an old school travelling salesman then range is a non issue 99% of the time. What you would benefit from however is how cheap EVs are to run. Charging overnight is so cheap it's virtually free.
I’ve crossed Europe in my non-Tesla EV - “absolute nightmare”, not even close, it worked out just great ⚡️😊 No one needs a fuel powered car for day-to-day use !
@johnnodge4327 that's all well & good if you dont mind waiting around at services Me I like nothing more than stopping at a petrol station & spending 5 mins max filling my diesel car up & not having to worry about stopping for at least 580 miles lol Going full ev is just not the answer
That looks an interesting car and I also like the yellow as I had the MG ZR in yellow and everybody that had one always flashed in acknowledgement as you drove past which was good. I think I would probably get the Alpine though if I was seriously looking at the car.
Enjoyed the R5 review , not so much the advert for the dash-cam !! Hopefully we won’t have to endure other such adverts in the future unless Ped’s fallen on hard times and we know that isn’t the case.
You happily watched the video for free though right ? I try to choose organic commercial partners to work with to help support the running of the channel and the making of the content you guys get to enjoy. I have bills to pay just like you do 🤷♂️
@@PetrolPed thanks for the reply Pedro. I watch numerous car posts on RUclips , including Matt Watson etc , but can’t recall the post being interrupted by an advert for some product. However , I do enjoy your posts and look forward to the next one. Cheers , Paul
I think it's a really nice runner !! I think he sounds like C3PO 😅 the price is great !! Pricing is all over the place, in a world where people are dropping 150k, there needs to be better options for lower budgets.
I adore everything about this car! They didn't seem to dilute it from the lovely prototype you reported upon. It's PERFECT for me! However...I'd have to turn off Microsoft Clippy whilst driving it.😆🤣 Love the nippy, hate the Clippy.
Great video and pleased that you enjoyed driving on just the kind of roads where I do most of my motoring. I hope to be able to drive a demonstrator in about 6 weeks time when I am told that the first rhd cars will arrive in the UK. My heart though is set on an Alpine A290 although like you a yellow nicely spec’d R5 might be a more head over the heart choice. Having a Megane E-Tech I have got to love the built-in tech which I think has largely been carried over to the R5 and A290. I think I would though miss the better performance (and range) of the Megane and I don’t really want to trade the comfort and refinement of the larger Renault model which I have come to appreciate. Having been a serial Mini Cooper S owner the new J01 electric model just doesn’t interest me. I don’t like the minimalist interior, the reports of its poorer quality and its bulbous shape. I know the SE is faster and has sportier handling but it is 200kg heavier and substantially more expensive. IMHO BMW have seriously dropped the ball with the Cooper and the Aceman. Perhaps BMW have been a bit too complacent. Who would have predicted that it would be Renault who would be making the Mini look decidedly old school.
These look the dog's bananas. Would definitely consider one as a 2nd car. Great price. Although that Renault version of "Clippy" needs to be consigned to the automotive dustbin. It was terrible in MS Office, it's terrible here too.
Whilst I love the look of these and need to have a go, to see if it would sway me towards electric. I love the channel but it seems to be going a bit commercial I don’t know if you are worried about saying anything bad about anything you’re lent, but it sort of feels there is no negative points on a lot of reviews and leads to a false sense of security
In the EU where I live this is quite a bit more expensive than the Citroen C3 and the Hyundai Inster. I'm not really sure it's worth more than these cars though. Right now I'm not really considering it but maybe if it gets to the price of the C3 and the Inster I might.
It's intriguing, but I can't get my head around the finance. The chunky deposit seems to be because (based on that bubble payment) they expect the car to be worth around half of its original value after only 2 years? That seems insane to me.
More akin to the ze50 Zoe, same 52kwh battery but more “HP” than the Zoe and thats a nippy car! Apart from styling the Zoe & 5 seem similar under the skin!
People should have a choice, ev or petrol, l Know which would sell more and it's not ev. I love the car would only buy if it's got a engine not battery's.
I watched another review of this with the bigger battery, and in 'real world' driving conditions, in our cold weather, the efficiency readings were resulting in a 'real world' range of around 150 miles. That, combined with the practicality of the almost 2+2 interior, makes it a city runabout. Looks great though.
@@greggpedder If you're happy to spend £20k+ on a city runabout (a city, where you probably have no off road parking to charge), then fine. But personally, I would just buy a used VW UP or similar for less than half the money. Just as roomy inside and big enough for the weekly shop......and will lose practically nothing in value. The R5 will lose big money like all EVs. As I said in my OP, it looks great though.
@@malph9216 yep I'm happy to spend that on a "city runabout" although the R5 is more than just a city runabout, it's quite capable for lots of other stuff as well. And I have a garage, drive and off street parking so that's not an issue either. As a second car to my i4 the R5 is almost perfect.
Some other reviews of it with the bigger battery got more range out of it and it seems that in summer conditions it's actually pretty close to the official range. Most reviews do show that the efficiency is pretty good so It will probably do better during winter than the other new EVs around the same price point that are arriving around this time as well. I ordered an R5 and I do drive mostly out of city to get to my work and I do not think range will ever be a problem for me.
I prefer the Twingo, but we'll see I guess. Not about to buy an EV anyway. Maybe in 5-6 years, these will have depreciated down to nothing once new battery tech arrives.

That's the fault of the WLTP system, not the manufs per se. The EPA ratings for the same cars in the US are much more realistic compared to EU/WLTP

Works for me in terms of styling. Maybe a panoramic roof would help lighten the cabin, as the dark headlining seems to dull the interior a wee bit.
