      @@hannibalbarca2939oh dawg, I wish I did the same lol. Got an nx8 2.5-20x50 as my “modern improved” seal recce rifle because the 2.5-10x24 and 32 were not an option. Looking back I so wish I waited for a less expensive second hand 1-8 ATACR (I really wanted one), or went with 4x16 over how cool extreme mag range can be and got the ATACR 4-16x42 for the same price I paid for the nx8. I love my scope and it’s amazing but I knew nothing about it’s eye box and super sensitive parallax range. Lesson learned, when you wait a year for a bonus and the opportunity to spend 2k+ on an optic just know that although all scopes in that range are amazing they all have their quirks and those tiny little differences will make you so sad lol. Don’t order anything you haven’t seen in person either.

    I had a Razor 1-10 and I'm one of those guys that thought it was an excellent 1-8 and I didn't care for the big center dot in the reticle. I sold it and picked up a K18i. You're correct that it does not have daylight bright illumination, but I love the glass clarity, low light performance, eye box, weight and FOV.

    I was going to get the ATACR recently as everyone raves on them. I finally got my hands on one a few months back to see it for myself. Honestly, I was a little disappointed. Glass was clear, turrets were crisp, eyebox was ok, everything was good but personally, it didn’t feel like a $3k optic. I ended up going with a Leupold MK 6, 1-6 instead for $1500. It’s almost as good in every category but significantly less money. I know people love Nightforce but for the money I feel like Kahles and Schmidt and Bender are a significant step up in quality for a little bit more. I mean, if you’re already spending $3k on an optic, what’s another $500? In addition, I know there is a bunch of new stuff out there but I still find that the Vortex Razor gen 2 1-6 with that simple bdc reticle is still really good. The only problem with that optic is the weight. Anyway, that’s my two cents… what are your opinions on price vs performance on the Nightforce?

    The eyebox is a lot more important when you are moving, in close quarters or shooting in non-standard positions (on your back/side, around barriers, etc.). During those times the eyebox really matters as it may take you an extra 2 or 3 seconds to line up you eye behind the scope, acquire the image, line up the dot and take the shot.

    • @JohnSmith-yx8kf
      @JohnSmith-yx8kf 11 месяцев назад +2

      This is why everyone has started to just run dots alongside LPVOs as a matter of course. Even the best LPVO at close distance will never be as good as a dot.

    • @mavrikmavrik3032
      @mavrikmavrik3032 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@JohnSmith-yx8kf I run an offset dot on my 18” heavy barrel build but it has a 4-16 scope. The dot is very easy to use. However it really sticks outside of the envelop of the rifle and is not only a snag point but is the first thing that hits if the rifle is laid down (or falls) on it’s right side. It’s a liability if you have to use the rifle somewhere not on a range. I use it because for that build it makes sense.
      I don’t like using extra red dots with an LPVO. If the 1x on an LPVO isn’t good enough then I don’t use it. That’s why right now I’m only using the Razor II 1-6 on my rifles with LPVOs. It has pretty much a true 1x with a wider FOV than any of my red dots. It has a bright dot and is excellent for close range shooting.
      The rest of my rifles have some type of red dot and QD magnifier.

      That’s why training consistency is key. Practice till you don’t get it wrong not till you get it right. It’s a non issue with enough dryfire drills. I have a dot solely for NVGs to avoid needing a laser.

    I've been issued the NF and worked extensively with it, but I bought a Vortex 1-10 for personal use and like it better for several reasons. The coating on the actual scope is better, in FFP, I can see much better with the Vortex at longer distance due to a better reticle, and I can obviously see further. The NF has a slightly better 1x but its not enough to justify getting a NF and losing capability. Price NF wins if you dont have mil discount.

    Been running the Leupold Mk5 2-10 on my .308 LMT MARS-H, very nice optic very nice is a “DMR” type of role. I do agree that the reticle is a little thick at 10x and is definitely geared for dialing elevation, but it does mean the reticle is very usable throughout the entire magnification range. The turrets are very nice so that helps too. I didn’t feel the need for a offset dot, but it hasn’t been squeezed into much close range shooting yet. I don’t think I’ll need an offset rds though, the 2x presentation didn’t mess with my eyes all that much.
    I’ve been behind the vortex gen 3 1-10, not my cup of tea, it didn’t agree with my eyes well and the image was very dark. Also got to sit behind a Kahles k16i, that thing was wicked as it produced an excellent image, but it’s reticle was strange to me. K16i or razor 1-6 might be the best lpvo put there for most people that say they want an optic for a “general purpose rifle” without getting caught up in features, imho.
    I found 1 to 4x optics (Steiner p4xi and Elcan Spectre DR) and RDS with 3x magnifiers have been what I fit to most of my carbines with the Mk5 2-10 to fill that longer range role. That gets my carbines out to 400m with most ball ammunitions.

      thanks for this comment, I have a LMT .308 as well, I currently use a 3.5x LED ACOG and I am happy with it in every way except for max magnification. I would really like to take advantage of the distance of the .308 and 6.5. I have used a NF 2.5-10 / Trijicon accupower 1-8, Elcan 1.5-6x, they were all alright.
      been thinking maybe Trijicon VCOG 1-8, if not, maybe something in the 10x+ range. the mk5 was just recently brought to my attention, seems like a nice scope 2-10.

    Interesting that you'd choose an ATACR over the gen 3 or even a Kahles. Almost everyone I know, myself included, hates the ATACR for what it gives you at the price point. Sure, it's a high quality optic, but a little dated with an eye box and eye relief that's finnicky at best and problematic at worst. Eye box and relief cannot be stressed enough since you're never just engaging under perfect conditioins on a flat range. If you've got a secondary sighting solution, good on you but you can have the same with the others. We find ourselves relying more on the piggy back or canted dot than running the atacr on 1x. The nx8 is an absolute cash grab too. If you want FFP performance and have the money to burn, S&B is the way to go. Other than that, I'd save the cash and get a gen 3, or stick with SFP and japanese or german glass. 6T looks cool but I'd pick it last from the big boy lpvos. SIG makes better lpvos with japanese glass than they did at the price point of the FFP 6t tbh.

    I still don’t get who draws the line between LPVOs and IPVOs. I know 3-9, 3-12, areI PVOs but 2-10 be one too? I know 2-12 are. Shit is kinda dumb because theirs no definition for where the power classification falls, does the low power decide, does the high power decide? Nobody knows because it’s not standardized. To me a scope is just a scope. This whole LPVO vs IPVO vs MPVO vs HPVO is wonky.

Nothing else even comes close to it. You're getting too technical in your descriptions. It would be better to explain why anything over 3x9 scope is not good for a sniper rifle. Or tricks to range a target. It becomes blah blah explaining torques on mounting a scope. People coming here want to know how a bug crawling up the crack of your .....! Doesn't affect your aim or shot. How you remain statue like and always make that shot??????? And how you become invisible to anyone in hunt of suspicious people. How you blend in???? Etc. Etc.
