  • We are re-tinting a regular old maple neck into a really nice vintage amber version. I explain how to do this properly with just a few items. No spray booth or other expensive gear required to get a very professional final product.

    I do a very similar thing with pre-mixed amber lacquer from Home Depot and I apply using a French policy method. I put blue painter's tape on the rosewood, sand down the maple, and put about 3-5 coats with very light sanding in between. You have to cut it with some alcohol (I use regular 70% isopropyl) so it's easier to apply. My last few projects (jazz bass, P-bass) look fantastic! I've got two Teles and a Strat coming up........super easy!

    Boiled linseed oil will accive the same result for those who don't want to pay a ton for tinting a neck, do the same prep, I prefer to use a finer sand paper for a smoother feel, but you can leave it rough,apply two coats and then take steel wool and rub it after it dries, wait a day before applying the second coat, I actually think it has a more transparent look than the stains, comes out the same color though,it's a lacquer free method.

      A little late, but would normal linseed oil work, or does it have to be boiled linseed oil? I tried using linseed oil and it didn't really change the color of it, more just added a glossy finish to it.

    • @2dazetake
      @2dazetake Год назад

      @@jackiechan7288I use boiled linseed oil, it dries a lot faster, it only tints slightly, not a full on amber tint, but I imagine you could add a few drops of brown leather dye to get more amber, I think the regular linseed oil takes a couple of weeks to dry, between coats, I've never used it,I basically was trying to add something to the raw wood after sanding the thick neck down,this was the best option for me,really didn't want to put more money into it.

      Ever try TruOil?
      I've used commercial tints, but also having gone to school for visual arts, I've also mixed my own stains using artist's oils, and finished with the wipe on T.O.,- which dries rock hard, with no tack, and a natural light amber.

    Appreciate the video. And yes I certainly agree, StewMac wants too much for their product. The guitar market hasn't been nor is likely to be what it once was over the last 20 years. Yet his luthier accoutrements are all astronomically priced - still. Gee; ya think that he could sell a lot more and make more profit with volume rather than making a killing on each can? This would encourage sales - rather than discourage them. His business - his problem.
    I did see something that I see in soooo many woodworking vids that are driving me bonkers to this day. Woodworking 101: ALWAYS sand WITH the grain - NEVER against the grain. Examine the flow lines of the grain and let the paper be guided by that alone. If you do not do that; then you will incur scratches that will be harder to get out until you do. Save time, effort, fewer headaches, and get a better professional result. End grain still matters too; so be judicious.

    Ik a good and cheap way that actually works first you go out and you buy 1000 grit sandpaper then you scratch up the surface of the headstock and then you put kiwi brown shoe polish do about three coats and make sure there is no noticeable smudges or blemishes then you take a lighter hold the flame about an inch 2/2 inch away and then go over real slowly and make sure that some suit gets left behind because that is your blending agent that'll go into the burnt shoe polish to make it an Amber really dark yellow color and just keep on going over until you get your desired color oh and another tip don't use a rag that has scratchy stuff on it use the softest material possible a good thing for this would be glasses cleaner cloth hope this helps

    • @2dazetake
      @2dazetake Год назад

      Yeah I just used boiled linseed oil, of course I sanded the whole neck down,including the fretboard,so I was working with raw wood, when I applied it, it dries fast but I waited a day before adding another coat, it's as good as a satin feel now,the indio strat neck, had a fair amount of sealer that I had to scrap off with a razor blade, before I even sanded it, but yes boiled linseed oil does leave a satin feel.

    The best way is to spray it and let time do its' trick to the finish. I have put colourants in my paint before but I don't do that unless I am touching up. And as far as tinting - you can do the same thing with Tints-all pigments dissolved in acetone or with RIT dye. RIT can be removed with bleach if you go too dark or don't like the colour. With chemical stain once it's on there - it's just on there. And I do not put FAKE Fender logos on guitars that are not made by Fender - ever!! This is piracy and is illegal. I don't understand why people think that a Fender style guitar needs a Fender decal to make it legitimate. I've only ever seen these on LICENSED COPIES - rarely have I seen an actual Fender guitar with a replacement decal. Putting a Fender logo on a non-Fender guitar no more makes it any better or more officially a Fender guitar that me standing in a garage makes me a car!! I've played MANY wonderful instruments that weren't Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Martin or other guitar makers. It doesn't make that guitar part any better or worse simply because it doesn't say Fender on it.

    • @solarismoon3046
      @solarismoon3046 Год назад

      @@mtp04987 No - just HAVING these illegal decals is ILLEGAL!! Both to make and to have since Fender owns the trademark and the copyright to their name and logos. The people like me who want to buy LEGITIMATE guitars and not PIRATED guitars care. Your attitude is truly piss poor towards this subject and it is the reason for so many lawsuits.
