  • The bigger, the scarier - spiders, scolopendras, scorpions, and cockroaches induce fear. Today's bugs are microscopic compared to ancient monsters. Want to test your nerves? This video explains how insects appeared, why prehistoric bugs were huge, their connection to oxygen and coal, the possibility of giant insects returning, and the Carboniferous period's impact on bug size.

Sorry no. experiments were done with raising roaches in a high oxygen environment - yes, they were bigger but only by about 10%. the reason explained was that they had genetic adaptations to small size which are unrelated to oxygen levels. And those DNA mutations override the growth size.

10% in just a generation or 2 is actually pretty huge. It's kind of obvious if you have way higher oxygen levels and they CAN get bigger than if there is a reason for evolution to select for size they would start to evolve more size.... that's the point of those kinds of experiments. They probably WOULDN'T evolve to be bigger today because humans would make that a deleterious mutation. But with higher oxygen levels back then and no humans and higher temperatures it's not hard to see how and why bugs got super-sized.

9:06 60 CM is more like two (some British kings feet) right? I guess it deppends though, you might be using baby feet (so a Prince maybe).

I'm glad someone else spotted the blooper when it's said that 60CM is 5.2 feet when it's more like two feet

Has anyone or you ever done a test in a lab and found that your theory is very true?. Very entertaining joke ....I am very amused.

What is the joke? And how would you "test" it?
I learned of this in a basic geology course over 40 years ago.
It's also necessary to be able to grow the large dinosaurs.

It’s sad that the younger generations have no clue about how the earth worked back then. The education system has changed so much in 40+ years! Back then we were taught more about science and chemistry

The air can only be the one density it is on earth because it depends on gravity

Wow, what an enlightening presentation... Thank you. The visuals were breathtaking and the narration was superlative. Although, at times I found it to be jumping back and forth between certain periods of our planet's history and had to refocus on what salient point was being made and in which period. Overall, I enjoyed it immensely.
