    Have to say, from this American's perspective, pretty outrageous UK laws only allow a top speed of 15mph. I own two high power ebikes that will do 40 mph....one a roabike with drop bar and another a 29er, both I built myself with Bafang BBSHD mid drive motor and 52v battery.
    I was at the grocery story the other day, I visit in my car and saw an ebike with no cranks that looked like a Harley Davidson soft tail with feet forward foot pegs....with fat tire 26 inch wheels. The owner who works at a local ebike shop I found out was just coming out and he built it. It had a 72v 40 amp-hr battery with '100 amp' controller and 5K watt rated rear hub motor. I asked him the top speed and he said 65mph. I asked him if the cops ever gave him any trouble and he said no.
    So called legal top speed in the US are class III ebikes sold locally that will do 28mph. I have never had a problem on my high power ebikes because I ride sensibly.
    What is silly is...the UK is cycling centric. I come from a bike racing background and at 70 y.o, I often ride 20-25mph on my carbon fiber race bike with no motor.
    Ridiculous, your onerous laws, but the people there make them.

      Its embarrassing to be honest. I build e bikes with a 1000w motor a twist grip throttle and I make them switchable to 250w to offer the ability to comply with 15 mph regulations when on the road. But they are still not legal for road use because I fit them with a twist grip throttle rather than the regulatory thumb throttle and I make the pedal assist switchable so you can turn it off for off road use. These bikes are not illegal to own in the UK but if you were on the road and were unlucky enough to run across a jobsworth in a uniform, you could have problems. The UK is a nanny state.

      UK / EU laws are a responce to lobbying from manufactures that make 50cc petrol scooters (big sellers in these areas) that are most peoples 1st mode of motorized transport. They have a 30mph limit & the basic test to ride them is easy. If E-BIKES could do 30+ mph big company's Honda / Yamaha / Vespa / Gilera / would loose 100.000s of sales

    • @tivvy-xf4kz
      @tivvy-xf4kz 2 дня назад +1

      The EU/UK ebike laws are to distinguish the rules between a bicycle and a moped or motor vehicle.
      It was also about safety by restricting the speed especially in crowded streets with irresponsible riders with no training or or licence of any kind being let loose on what could be a dangerous vehicle to pedestrians etc.
      Anything over that restricted speed and it becomes a motor vehicle and is subject to the same rules as mopeds/motorcycles eg licence, insurance, helmet.

    What happens to the bikes you review?, do they go back to the manufacturer or on to another reviewer. Just had a look on their website, the bike is very heavy at 51kg, 13.65 kg for the battery alone. My sister has a similar bike and the battery went flat when we were in the hills, (battery was faulty, got replacement) very hard to push up hill though, and this bike is heavier, but I suppose you can always phone a friend.

    • @scottharvey9764
      @scottharvey9764 2 дня назад +2

      Power comes from 3 things battery voltage / motor watts / controller amps. For your info i have run my bike on 36V / 48V / 52V / with the same motor & controller amps. Top speed was not really much different but pull away torque from a stand still increased & time to get to top speed decreased with each step up in voltage. As most UK available off the shelf e=bikes are 36V or at a push 48V getting a 52V is not that common so worth mentioning mistaking Torque & power is quite common a bike with more torque will feel more powerful even if it is no faster at the top end.

    • @nickwinn7812
      @nickwinn7812 День назад

      @@baconbuttties Sorry, you're not really correct there. The speed of any particular DC motor is indeed governed by the voltage applied. However, the speed of a particular motor relative to the voltage applied to it is dependent upon the design of the motor. This is normally given as a K number, indicating rpm per volt applied eg a motor with which is rated at 100k will spin at 2000rpm when 20 volts is applied. It is perfectly possible to build a 24v motor which spins just as fast as a 52v motor when both are at their respective rated voltages, however the 24v motor would be spinning at over twice it's rated speed if 52v were applied (if it didn't self destruct first).

      @@rhysmuscle2329 No it isn't. A 230v ceiling fan has a tiny fraction of the power of that Ebike, but five times the voltage.
