Exploring cool sounds bell plates at LAPR: of interest to composers, sound designers, ensembles

Please wear headphones! Bell plates are sometimes used as a substitute for tuned bells. However, they stand on their own and have a certain versatility due to their shape and thickness that tuned bells do not have. We ship these bell plates all over the country for orchestras and other types of ensembles. Also, film composers, interactive and game composers, and TV composers use them to layer in for unique audio textures. They cross the line between music and sound design.
A few minutes of experimentation with mallets and other implements, combined with different striking techniques, provides a wide range of timbres. Low-end and resonance can only be heard with good speakers or headphones. Many of these bell plates have incredible overtones as well.
Currently we have a chromatic set at C2-Bb4 (as of 2023).

So this may sound crazy but it was just iPhone. The BTS is that we took this video was an afterthought when we had to set up and take new photos of the bell plates. 😱
