He did EVERYTHING wrong, he could have accepted the help of his friends, instead of riding off to the lake and using the Behelit.
I don't know about the "accepting help of his friends" part. He would pretty much never be able to fight or walk again and would just be in bed constantly reminded of how he failed to achieve his dream. In the end he became a God and I'm pretty sure he doesn't regret shit considering what the alternative of his life would be
