I did my first laptop motherboard fix thank's to 15 minutes worth of your videos. It's quite simple once you get grasp of what you need to find. I plugged 19V on the power connector and got 19V on the mains so the connector and PSU were fine. Next I measured what voltages I get across the PCB, turns out I get 0,8V here and there, but not 5V on USB so that means that power isn't getting pretty from the mains. So I go and check the first 2 mosfets that 19V goes to and 19V didn't get past the first mosfet. I took it off and used a jumper wire and the whole laptop woke up.
It's amazing how simple issue can cause the whole laptop to not function. I'm pretty confident now that I can take on even tougher problems if the situation needs it, hence if the laptop is worth saving.
Even on this video I get the idea what you are trying to do and while experience helps, I assumed you would just go trough each component until you hit nothing and start taking suspicious parts out. I don't still have the hot air station required for this job to be easy, but I most certainly are gonna buy one now.
    Thank's and keep it going!

      @london4983 4 года назад +3

It would be your first fail if you use jump wire on upper mosfet and in that time charger IC doesn't work properly. In this case all 19V would get through the whole motherboard...

@@london4983 Totally wrong, it seems you do not understand the principals of voltage rails in a notebook. The shorted MOSFET is not an UPPER MOSFET because its not part of a switching buck converter where upper and lower MOSFETS exist.

Very impressive, Sorin! Power supplies are a pain and it is rarely a solid state device that is the initial cause of failure; capacitors are always suspect.
I often used that technique of checking the temperature of components. The difference was usually so small that I would check them on my upper lip until the day that a component was so hot that it caused a painful blister that I remember to this day!

I enjoy watching your analysis and patience sharing your methodology with us. it's always replace with most techs. But why the failure in the first place. I can't ever give up attempting to repair rather than replace. work on car computers/controllers. Circuit boards. But only after they've been replaced for upwards of $1,000.00. I repair and then they're passed to the next unsuspecting customer. I've gained plenty of information and techniques from you. i will add the motherboards and configurations of HP laptops are ridiculous. Thank you again.

    Checks:
Power indicator light is on, which means 19v, 3.3v is present.
Press the power button, not turning on.
Replug bios battery to see if the laptop is frozen.
Power button has 3.3v, press to pull to 0v, indicates power button is working.
Concluded that all power supply is good but the laptop is not turn on.
Suspect super io chip MC KBC1126 is mulfunctional
After taking apart, found blown first mosfet near charging port
    Procedures:
Clean out the mosfet, pad is ripped, so bridge from next component to second mosfet
After that check with DC power, found charging port + is taking 2.4A, indicates a short to ground.
On the second mosfet, using the DC power and found there's something takingpower.
Solder a wire to the soldering pad on the second mosfet, and found there's power supply group getting hot.
Take off a mosfet, check shortage on the capacitor, still short, put this one back; take the second one off, still short, put this one back as well.
Take off the capacitor near them, found one of them is broken.
Put everything back. Connect the power and check if 19v is presenting; YES
Connect lcd and everything, got a picture, repair is done.
    CONCLUSION:
THIS IS BASIC, YOU DON'T NEED SCHEMATIC FOR THAT! --- Sorin

YOU KNOW WHY HE CAN FIX ANYTHING.
because he is romanian, and in romania you HAVE TO FIX IT OR SOMEONE ELSE WILL..SAME IN africa or india...not like in england where people just replace stuff or throw million pound laptop in bin....them romanians man...they fix and build anything......they can do anything. the mechanics there can hook up a volkswagen engine to a ford gearbox. all inside a citroen body..no messing.

He omits parts, removes & reinstalls chips with NO flux nor cleanup nor fresh solder, and fights a soldering iron tip that looks 100 years old... WOW. He would save a lot of time with a FLIR camera, as he spends a lot of time hunting hot spots. I should be appalled, but I'm truly facinated.

What is the American equivelant? I've been trying to bring my motherboard back to life for a week. I've fixed a short, and now I can plug in my charger without it shorting out. However, I still cannot power on my laptop and I'm trying to identify the next fault. Your videos make learning an adventure, and I love it! Thank you for everything. Keep doing what you do!

@@electronicsrepairschool So, my motherboard is pretty soggy now. I've drenched my motherboard in Zippo lighter fluid and I cannot find anything. Am I performing this test correctly? I have applied 19v past the 2nd MOSFET because this is where I stopped reading 19v from the charger. I have my ground connected to one of the various screw holes. I've tested a multitude of the double MOSFETs on my motherboard and they are all reading ground on both sides. I've removed one of them and I'm still reading ground on the solder points on both sides - so this rules out the MOSFET, yes? I'm assuming something is bridging the ground and power circuit somewhere and that is why I'm reading ground on both sides? I just feel lost now. Any guidance you could supply would be greatly appreciated. I was hoping that this video would point me in the right direction, but now I'm just at a stand still and do not know how to troubleshoot this next.

Congratulations! You are excellent in what you do! By the way, what's the name of the liquid transparent you use before weld? Also, how much temperature you use in your soldering iron and the other of air (I believe)? You desolder the components very quickly! Thank you
