Firstly, when I buy HiFi gear, I try very much to buy from companies where I can actually speak to the owner/CEO/designer. I did this with Eric Alexander who was extremely helpful when I bought my Pendragons. We just chatted for close to an hr about HiFi and which speakers would be best for me. He didn’t even try to upsell me. I also spoke with Scott Reynolds at Tavish when I bought my phono stage, etc. I’ve bought many “open box” or demo models, and used gear, but I always went and checked it out first. That’s how I got my turntable. I’ve made many friends here online through the VC (vinyl community). We all give each other records and just keep the hobby going. Great vid. Thanks Jay!
Great suggestions. The two most important words that you mentioned: Patience & Respect. They go a long way. I was able to buy a pair of DynAudio Contour 20s for $2950 new-in-box. Cash. The 20i had just come out, least popular color (but my favorite)..I asked for his best price “cash" out-the-door. The speaker retailed for $5300 + tax. He gave me a price $1000 less than I was expecting! 😁
Did not know a promotional contest would ever happen in this youtube age of Hi Fi reviews with so much gear and stuff. It puts some of the fun back in the hobby. I have a lot of vintage gear that I bought decades ago and just moved with me after a 20 year residence at my old apartment. that stuff was vintage then, like my Harmmon/kardon 330c. I bought that in 1995 at a used/vintage hifi shop in my old Philly neighborhood. And my Polk floor speakers that I bought new in the 1980s. Can't wait to try out some stuff from the 21st century. thanks!
Most of my audio collection was purchased in the 1970's as a twenty-something. As I lived in NYC there were dozens of hifi stores/shops to pick from. In those days if you couldn't get a "bargain" you weren't trying very hard. Nobody sold MSRP. My first graphic equalizer was a demo model Sound Shaper Two (with the VU meters) from Stereo Warehouse in 1978. Got a swell price and this thing still functions. My first component hifi system was purchased after military service (and broke) in 1975. It consisted of a Pioneer SX-434, BIC-920 and KLH model 31's. Got it all for under $250. Nice interesting video.
+1 on the friendship. My first set of speakers was from some who gave me older stuff from his collection and it got me on a good path towards the better appreciation of music and the components that go with that journey.
Jay is getting better and better... Most informative, intelligent and knowledgeable reviewer, EVER! Keep it up my dear friend... Thank you for your hard work
Neighbors - talk to them. One gave ne a mint set of Quad 57 ESLs - I had to rebuild the electronics, but cosmetically mint and in the factory crate. Another neighbor gave me a McIntosh C 26 preamp and a 2100 power amp (it was toast, though) and a pair of Thiel CS3 speakers. Another lady neighbor gave me about three systems - nothing great, but she had six systems that her late husband had collected. I ended up selling her my ZU Dirty Weekend speakers and hooking her up with a PS Audio sprout amp and she loves that system . The gear is out there, you just have to find it.
Some excellent points for beginners and veterans as well. I once got an Adcom GFA5500 (Nelson Pass) for 500.00. It was completely checked out and calibrated. The key is as you say Jay, be patient and I say, learn how to search and find.
Patience is such a good virtue when looking for good used gear. But also research and the will to act quickly when a good opportunity does finally arrive. So when a refurbished Denon PMA-1060 amplifier showed up, I went to the seller the next day, tested it and it appeared to be a very good match to my Wharfedale Lintons. Of course it's no PMA-A110 but at just 1/10th of the price it does a damn good job.
I have bought my entire main system from ebay :) Fellow audiophiles will often look to sell gear when the time comes to try something new again, when that audiophile itch kicks in... And audiophiles typically take good care of their gear, so I have gotten all components looking and performing like brand new but for a fraction of the price. Definitely great tips Jay also when it comes to buying new and talking to dealers...
Some good tips here!! I bought my amp "used" from a dealer. Pretty much in that 50% off MSRP...14 years later still loving it. Bought my phono cart from CAM and got a great deal there too!!
I have built a very nice system by buying and selling (sometimes after refurbishing) used equipment and slowly working my way up. It is a lot of work and the return vs the time spent isn't always great but if you enjoy doing it as a hobby anyway it can be worth it.
Hi Jay grettings from Sweden =) My whole system is bought used. It's under half the price. I'm from Sweden so i exchange it to dollar. Bushardt s300mk ll - 500$ Musical Fidelity M6si - 1400$ Topping D90 MQA - 700$ Raspberry pi4 with case (volumio) 50$ Ifi power X 5v to the raspberry 60$ Rega RP3se with Exact Pu 500$ Xindac FS-1 Speakercables 70$ Almost all cables are bought used, but trying out Mogami XLR right now that bought new. Don't know how mutch I saved, but it's way under halv the price 😊
I live in LA area, not exactly Mayberry. One has to be careful about person to person sales. A friend who has been burgled has some precautions he takes. He never deals with emails or texts only. He talks to every potential buyer on the phone to vet them. He finds out what they know about the the gear they want to buy, audio in general, their system etc. Make sure it's just not a burglar trying to get his address. Once he green lights them and to make sure they are serious, he gives them an address a couple doors away from him and has them call when they arrive. Thats when he gives them the correct address. He also doesn't show people his system. He gives them the item in a box. They can examine it but he's not going to do a dealer demo for them. Paranoid? Don't judge until you have been ripped off. There are a lot of people on Craig's list who play games.
I've owned a ton of Samsung smartphones and I think the technology is too new to buy one of the new flip phones, but if they wanted to give me one, I'm in. Thanks Jay; always love your content.
You speak the truth on matters of Hi-Fi. I commend you on your mission. There is hope yet in millenials and Gen Z’s getting into real good audio and caring about how their music sounds, if you’re one indication.
I started my path as a beginner audiophile when I bought. an used Ifi dac black label from a friend . It cost me $ 250 dollars less than a new one. It came with its original package and all the accessories. I haven’t had any problem with it.
Great stuff Jay. I too have made friends on AudioMart where we've each bought things from each other and even outright exchanged things because we trust the other person has taken care of the gear. It's also a great way to try things out you wouldn't otherwise be able to.
I will turn 20 years old in 2 months and love learning about the big world of HIFI and beeing an audiophile. Jay, you really inspired me. I know am confident i will one day in the near future own a good quality 2.1 music system. I currently own klipsch 600m and am selling them. I m saving money to buy kef ls 50 meta + atoll in 200 + bluenode streamer or a kef ls 50 wireless 2. I love your channel and the fact that you are so honest and give so good advice from all the experience you have had. I hope Im gonna win something so I can come closer to my dream! Im looking forward for the sweepstacking event, I hope I did write that correctly. Also Im a big fan of Samsung and Android in general. Im buying a samsung tab s7 to replace my laptop using samsung dex, the most underrated samsung feature in my opinion. For studiing its perfect. I can draw, I can surf the web, its compatible with microsoft services etc etc. Sidenote, this is my first time that I enter a giveaway on yt for witch im not like 3 years too late and its also the longest comment i ve ever written. I want new audio gear so badly, or at least a discount! Feel free to contact me if you got smth interesting❤
Great advice. Just did this over the summer for my family room system (wish I had known for my main system). Got the Totem Skys, Hegel Rost and heavy stands, all used but in great condition, all in matching white finish, and all for $2150 CAD. It sounds amazing. The retail price would have been $6,800 CAD including taxes. I live in Toronto, the speakers were from Ottawa, amp from Hamilton and stands from Goderich. Got to meet some nice audiophile too.
Bought a Hegel H160 and Martin Logan esl's for less than half price used about 7 months ago. Never had imagined it could be so good on the cheap. Can't see myself ever buying retail when the gear is taken care of.
Well elaborated Jay! I'm more into Black Friyay and other sale days, New Old Stock, used gears, Display Units, Clearance Sale and sometimes I pre-order new audio gear to satisfy my gears acquisition syndrome.
Seems like most people with hifi shops are always passionate about what they're selling and almost always try to give a good deal, hifi shops definitely have some of the best customer-seller relationships purely from relatability
You are right about most gear losing 50% of its value when it leaves the store. At least that's the way it was, unfortunately a lot of people don't agree and are trying to recoup up to 85% of what they paid in the store when they are selling on the used market. The tragedy is that every time some one gives them what they are asking it reinforces these high prices for used gear.
Great advice! as you said second hand and vintage are good deals. right now I am using a vintage sony receiver as a pre with an arcam poweramp that I bought as a second hand. For me this journey has ben fun
Waiting for the right moment and participate in every free gear stuff. Those are tips that I learned with time. Thanks for sharing! Can’t wait to see what this partnership with Samsung will bring to us! Keep the good work Jay!
Thanks for all the great content. Doing the giveaways are for sure a nice bonus though. Appreciate all the time you take to review items to share your feedback and thoughts with the community.
Looked at their stuff love Samsung, we have their items where I work also But most of all I'm an audiophile myself. Don't have any dedicated music speakers but I have Martin Logan, marantz, svs, sunfire, monter cables, Sonos, Sony, and Samsung, sennheiser, creative labs, Aune, and Apple products just to name a few. Love your channel keep it up.
It's always great to hear how just a bit of resourcefulness, persistence, and a sprinkling of tenacity can yield the right results - in this case: a potentially great-sounding system for half the price. Looking forward to all the giveaways and accompanying videos.
Jay, i'm from Brazil and here...we don't have much choice for audiophiles itens. We have to buy it from out of the country. BUT, your tips are absolutely great and thanks for your videos
Hi Jay The continued helpful videos you provide on a weekly basis goes a long way in navigating the minefield that can a does exist in the world of "Audiophile" and understanding the pitfalls. Personally, along with yours and a number of other "select" RUclipsrs I've started to understand and come to enjoy the knowledge passed in by you guys and for that I/we are greatful. Looking forward to the Samsung event and seeing what and how Samsung will effect our futures. Keep on doing what you do and keep on in the groove. Peace to you and yours ✌🏾✊🏾🥃
I bought a NAD T787 (2013) flagship model AVR for $350…. 120W x 7 all channels driven. Then I upgraded the modules for network, 4K and 11 channels of atmos for $1000. Now it’s as capable as the 2020 flagship model which is $4000. Definitive technologies BP-10 bi-polar tower speakers plus the center channel $250.
Could you make a video on how to disrespectfully ask for discounts? like name calling, the best profanity to use, and maybe the best way to come off entitled? Maybe also talk about how to scam friends out of audio gear too that would all be very helpful.
I needed new speakers for my computer now that I'm moving and my current system goes to the living room, and these KEF would be a good solution for me, specially coming at no cost. For the Samsung events, the one related to the Z Fold3 seems to be the best one.
It looks like Samsung is having a sweepstakes too. However, I'm much more into hifi gear than a new washing machine at this point in time. The Starke review was very interesting. Thanks for giving away all this amazina kit Jav.
Used gear is my go-to, love hifishark! If you buy it 2nd hand at a good price there's usually zero write-off when you want to sell it again. I bought a Violectric V200 yesterday for €400 including some crazy power cable, no haggling it's just an early model from 2010 yet still works like a charm. Couple years ago I got a 2016 Audeze LCD2f for €750. It's almost impossible to sell both these for less than what I paid for.
Great advice Jay. Buying second hand is a great way of being able to buy, try over weeks and sell if the unit doesn’t work for you with minimal $ lost. I’m sure Samsung will have some sweet deals in their “offer of the day.”
Great stuff on not bargaining too hard. Remember most of these guys loved their purchase (condition shows it all), so it's a bit hard to pass. Need an audiophile network in Sri Lanka!
Hello, bought my Luxman DAC, Luxman Headphone amp p-750 and Empyrean headphones used. They feel as new, saved a LOT and got the exact gear I wanted to. I also got my ls50 new for 700 Eur after the Meta was launched... As you said, be patient (and open), the right gear in the right condition will come.
Good information in this video Jay and more videos like this would be good , 100% agree in buying used gear and being respectful when asking for discounts , cheers dude!
Really looking forward to those bundle offers, but mostly excited for the gear giveaway! A nice pair of bookshelf speakers is all I'd need to complete my nearfield listening setup!
My vintage Pioneer rack (with budget dac) will now rest after more than 30 years of service. I’ll soon buy a pair of towers (Wharfedale or Fyne audio) for about 500/580€ and an all analog integrated (Cambridge audio axa35 or Rega) for 350/550€. And keep the Pioneer cd player, the dac and the Apple tv box. Nice system for about a grand
I wish I'm a beginner audiophile. There's so much more to explore in the budget hifi world compared to when I started out. BTW, thanks a million for the giveaways.
Another piece of advice is to be flexible: if you're planning to buy a DAC first, but have an opportunity to pickup the amp or speakers you want at a good price, you should probably take the deal and accept getting the components in a non-optimal order. My weakness is impatience.
Great suggestions! Luck was one of my things. I purchased an Anthem MRX 740 but was given an MRX 1140. I tried to return it but due to being out of stock of the 740 they let me keep the 1140. The audio gods were looking out for me that time!
Thanks for this opportunity Jay. Your channel has been indispensable in informing my buying choices. If by some slim chance I win this will be gifted to my blind son who just got his own apartment.
I always gently ask for any month end sale or discount if available of the audio gear and have been able to get 5% off on most of my purchases. Thanks for tips Jay.
Checking out the samsung event this week and like I said before I am excited about the sweepstakes from both them and yourself. Any new piece of gear would be amazing to have and especially a new set of speakers. Running these Celestion SL6's I was given as my first real pair has been an amazing start to this hobby but I am super excited at the chance to hear something else I otherwise wouldn't be able to!

Hi Jay, tried to register to the Samsung using this link but it only accepts ZIP code. No CDN postal code.
My next purchases will be a TV and hopefully a power amp. Since Samsung doesn't make amps, the Samsung TVs interest me the most.
Thanks for the giveaway Jay !

Great vid. Thanks Jay!
Thanks for the advice! Also, you are the first one of the Hi-FI RUclips community that gives something back to! Thank you for being awesome!
Getting a great system doesn't have to be expensive. It just takes time and research. I like the video.
Hi Jay pls continue to make these tip guides. They really help any audiophile on how to improve their sound and be a savy buyer
Very nicely constructed video to help budding audiophiles get their initial setup moving without burning a hole in their pocket.. Thanks Jay.
I am now advertising myself as a consultant because I watch your videos so much. Thanks!
+1 on the friendship. My first set of speakers was from some who gave me older stuff from his collection and it got me on a good path towards the better appreciation of music and the components that go with that journey.

Used gear. Used gear. Used gear. Yes yes yes!! Almost half off on my first dap. It was such a good deal.
I'm a fan of used audio. Less trash to the world and you build connections with people to share your passion

Definitely one of the best "budget HiFi" videos available. Thanks Jay!

Maybe also talk about how to scam friends out of audio gear too that would all be very helpful.
lmao. In terms of your "friends," nudge them a little to purchase more expensive items shrug xD
🤣 😂 😆 😱 🥴 🥸 😝 🥺 🤬 🤯 😳 🙄
I needed new speakers for my
computer now that I'm moving and my current system goes to the living room, and these KEF would be a good solution for me, specially coming at no cost. For the Samsung events, the one related to the Z Fold3 seems to be the best one.
It looks like Samsung is having a
sweepstakes too.
So much good info for beginners and seasoned vets
Appreciate the chance to win all of this great gear. Happy to comment.!
Great advice Jay! Thanks for the giveaway series!
A good video to prove being an AUDIOPHILE isn't expensive...👏👏👏
Great tips to reach the goal of owning a quality hifi system
Good information in this video Jay and more videos like this would be good , 100% agree in buying used gear and being respectful when asking for discounts , cheers dude!
Thanks for the chance to win, Jay.
Great advice Jay. Keep up the great work!
Looking forward to their promotional deals and sweepstakes. Thanks for doing this for the community Jay.
Patience and respect go a long way in any transaction.
Thanks for great giveaways Jay!
Finding deals on eBay is hugely gratifying :)
Cheers Jay,
Looking mostly forward to the Bundle Offers.
Thanks for all the tips.
Key takeaway is patience. Basically all of these approaches are centered around a patient approach to purchasing. That and luck.
Respect is definitely key. 🔑
Support your local dealer when you can. Great video, thanks!
Great suggestions! Luck was one of my things. I purchased an Anthem MRX 740 but was given an MRX 1140. I tried to return it but due to being out of stock of the 740 they let me keep the 1140. The audio gods were looking out for me that time!
Looking forward for more videos. Thanks for the giveaways Jay!
Jay convinced me to spend more money 💸
Hyped for the "offer of the day" part of the event... samsung monitors are super compelling
Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten.
Hi Jay. This was super useful for a beginner like myself!
Thanks for the tips Jay!
