  • No commentary playthrough of Doom3, Veteran difficulty, using the Dhewm3 source port for better compatibility with modern systems.
    This is my new Doom3 playthrough in celebration of its 20th anniversary. This time around I'm using og Doom3 instead of the BFG Edition and play in full 4K resolution.
    Doom3 is often cited as the black sheep of the Doom franchise. It was a reboot, but instead of focusing in the action, it focused on the fact that people shat their pants with the original Doom back in the day. So we have a much slower, darker game, with a weaker player character, with jumpscares and very creepy passages with resembles a survival horror experience rather than a Doom one. It was also critiqued for its weak shotgun, abuse of closet monsters, lackluster multiplayer and the fact that you can't use a flashlight and a weapon at the same time (though this adds to the creepy experience imho).
    But Doom3 is basically a product of its time, where shooters were headed to a full linear, narrative experience... And they tried to follow the trend. It did have some cool features though, the interactive consoles are neat, the lightning is amazing, the atmosphere is well achieved, and honestly... it still manages to look awesome at times nowadays.

    Este es mi playthrough de Doom3 en celebración de su 20 aniversario. Esta vez estoy usando el Doom3 en lugar de la BFG Edition y jugando en resolución 4K.
    Doom3 es señalado habitualmente como la oveja negra de la franquicia Doom. Fue un reboot, pero en lugar de fijarse en la acción, se fijó en el hecho de que la gente se cagaba encima con el Doom original en su día. Así que tenemos un juego mucho más lento, oscuro, con un jugador débil, con jumpscares y pasajes muy tenebrosos que recuerdan más a un survival horror que a Doom. Tambien fue criticado por su escopeta débil, abuso de monstruos en armarios, multijugador pobre y el hecho de que no puedes usar una linterna y un arma a la vez (aunque honestamente esto aporta a la experiencia tétrica).
    Pero Doom3 es básicamente un producto de su época, donde los shooters ofrecían experiencias lineales y narrativas... E intentaron seguir la moda. Ofrecía unas características bastante majas, las consolas interactivas están muy chulas, la iluminación es increíble, la atmósfera está bien conseguida y honestamente todavía luce genial en muchas ocasiones hoy día.

    The lighting in this still looks insanely good even at 20 years old

    I always wondered what those "backing up files" screens did? If it was maybe part of some removed feature, or just there for adding flavour to the game.

    Siempre me a gustado mucho esa parte donde esta el tipo ese colgado al techo e invoca a los Maggots tiene una vibra a lo Hellraiser

    The thing that makes this game unbearable to me is that as soon as I get hit, the camera freaks out. Not that alone, but when paired with the fact that the wnemies don't slow down or flinch at all when they're shot just feels jank. At least that's how I remember experiencing it.
    Either impact feedback for both or none.

    “Marine! The squad is one level ahead of where you are! Pick up the pace!” Having that for many levels in the game is… frustrating. It’s like the lowest possible form of storytelling.
