OMG I caught a BIG Murray Cod in the Waranga Western Channel

- I wasn't expecting to pull a Murray Cod out of this irrigation channel, let alone the biggest one I have ever caught! The fish around here have been so quiet this winter, even more so than usual. I drove out to this carp-infested channel to target carp specifically, knowing that I would have a higher chance of catching something.
Between my excitement and the sheer size and weight of the fish, I could barely manage to lift it up at arms length to give the camera a good shot of it! I wish I had scales to weigh this beast, but I did get a measurement and a photo on the brag-mat.
Hopefully this trip was a sign that my luck is beginning to change! With about 3 weeks left until Spring starts, I'm very excited to be getting out and doing more fishing again.

A COD mate, I am so happy for you! When the drought breaks... WHOA! What a nice fish. It was probably eating the carp that were there for the corn :) Although, having said that, I have caught cod on corn and on bread when fishing for carp. And carp on big lures when fishing for cod. You never can tell.
Thanks so much Andrew! With cod that like hanging around, it's going to be harder to catch carp and reddies in there that's for sure! Not that I'm complaining hahaha. I'll be going back there in summer with stump jumpers and spinnerbaits!
@@RKJFishing Oh, dear, such a sacrifice mate. Small reddies and carp for monster Cod. I do not know how you will cope! i was going to say, when cod season opens for real, hit it up with some frog or other surface lures through the evening or early morning periods.

I don’t know why the carp can’t be caught on lures is even a myth, I catch em all the time on my local river with my number 3 stumpjumper

I wasn't expecting a cod either Nick! You can probably tell I was a bit excited hahaha. I had a feeling during the fight that it might be a cod by the way it kept swimming straight downwards, but I didn't want to say it out loud and then find out it was just a fat carp haha

@@BlackCountryPiker Not really, they try to electrofish and relocate them into the river as they have a habit of clogging up the farmers pumps lol. I might even apply for relocation permission so next time I can go release the beast into the river! Then all I have to worry about is how to get it there hahahaha

I recon you're on the money! Since cod stocking has been going on the reddys have taken a beating it seems. More big reddys than ever. Little ones fatten up cod nicely. Another good reason to release unwanted redfin

Rohan! Mate that is incredible! That is the beauty of fishing, especially bait fishing, you never know what is going to tug on ya line! Just goes to show fish eat just about anything! Who knows that cod may have engulfed a carp that was on the corn and came up second best! Anyway well done!

I wish I had scales! I would estimate it at about 18-20kgs, it was a heavy bugger! I'm definitely getting a new, sturdier net hahaha. I will do my best to catch more like that one! Thanks so much Phoebe

Just FYI, cod cannot absorb oxygen when pushed backwards in the water, next time you catch a big one, just push it forward out into the deep. Cold water holds higher oxygen rates and a push rushes water over the gills, the cod will do the rest..

I did end up giving it a gentle nudge at the end there when it swam off, once I was sure it had it's balance good and proper. Thanks for the awesome comment mate.

@@MurrayCrabbFishing Actually, cod cannot absorb much oxygen when pushed forward either, this is because they actually bring water in through the gill plate and spit it out their mouth when breathing, unlike salt water fish which breathe in the opposite direction, in through the mouth and out through the gills. All freshwater fish breathe in this manner. It is to do with osmotic regulation. Salt water fish have to constantly drink water to keep the osmotic balance in their cells. Too much salt pulls water from their cells and collapses them, thus they are always fighting to keep water in their system. In the fresh water, they have the opposite problem, that is, water is absorbed into their cells. Thus, they try to avoid taking in too much water by spitting most of what they take in during the breathing process. Holding the jaw of a freshwater fish in the release is the worst thing we can do, as the opening and closing of their jaw is what opens and closes the opercula to pump the water across the gills. The holding of the fish's mouth and forcing it into the current is a carry over from blue water fishing, where tunnel breathers such as tuna, marlin and billfish all benefit from having water forcefully pushed through their mouth and out their gills. This is how they normally breath. The best way to revive a freshwater fish, if they require it, is to just gently cradle it below their belly and allow it to breathe normally. It will take off when it is ready.

Thanks heaps Dave! Yeah over legal for sure, murray cod have a slot limit from 55cm to 75cm (22.5 inches to 29.5 inches). Hopefully I can get a better one someday! I want to join the meter club (100cm cod - 39.3 inches)

Wow that's huge for a bass isn't it? We have Australian Bass over here which are a different species to the ones you get over there, but it probably resembles a smallmouth the closest in shape but silvery green in colour
@@RKJFishing I also got a pb 50cm smallmouth. I didn’t handle it properly. Threw it onto my compost pile and a bald eagle came and ate it. I got some pics. Never saw one up close like that.

Cold weather is the best time to target the big girls for a pile of reasons mate. the fishing is slower in general but the size of the fish caught is generally better.

It is still quite cold here, but not cold enough to snow. Thank you so much! That fish was actually oversize at 89cm, to be a legal size fish to keep a Murray Cod has to be between 55cm and 75cm. I would have let him go anyway though, he was too beautiful haha

Nice one mate. I one caught a 75cm muzza in my irrigation canal using worms. The canals r awesome for fishing when the river track is too boggy.
