This is what I needed! Started playing legend as well from your advice, feels a lot better than with PES 2020. I have identified passing and defending as my greatest weaknesses, so I'll watch all your 2021 tutorials just as I did with 2020 when I started.

Great tutorial, I also want to add that u can use R2+X for holding position against the attacker, it was previous versions feature, but it still works in 2021. What this combination of buttons do is marking the opposition player but without going close to him, just copy the movements of AI movement. PS- we should focus now on corners, cause legend diff are deadly :D
Good Video, but what people need to learn as well is player facing position. If you recover and turn to an attacking player, they can press X and win the ball back. You see a lot of goals being conceding because of players winning the ball and than turning and facing the opponent player. Always try to face away from the opponent to auto shield or defend and retain possession of the ball.
Totally agree. Usually it happens when you apply too much pressure or push x button your player has too much inertia and the ball goes far off your control. (If not conceding a foul).

Curious why you don't like "swarm the box" tactic. Is it because the LB and RB get pulled into the middle too much? I use it because it helps nerf the CPU playing balls into a strikers feet for the turn and shoot.
They drop too deep, if there's too big a gap between their striker and your defender they'll turn and shoot freely. Watch the Data Pack 2.0 video and in there you'll see a turn shot and goal because of STB

Hey Spoony loving your videos. Can you do one on how to receive the ball. For some reason whenever I receive the ball it takes ages for the player to pass and he does so in a very weird position. I also have the ball bounce off my player for some reason when a pass is being made.

that Lenglet late minute clean tackle is a beauty... but I wouldnt dare to because most likely I would get a red and a pen. It feels like the refs in 2021 are just waiting me pressing the circle button to offload my players off the pitch! :(((

So i assume deep defensive line when i'm winning is causing me to tend to 'park the bus' unintentionally, and receiving that hateful turn on shot late goal at 85 minute. So it's better level up compactness to make midfielders help to close the gap, right?

This is the way. The only time i use a sliding tackle is when i am 1-0 down and cant score and get frustrated, so I nail a few players in pure rage. 😂😂
It's definitely a great tutorial and I completely understand what you're saying mate, also how that type of defending is probably the most effective. However it's a bit annoying how the game is made especially against legend AI, making it almost impossible to win the ball in their half of the field, every time you start pressing a legend AI player no matter who it is they immediately turn their back on you and it's like pushing against a wall. By the way what's your opinion on the way some people press the ball like in the older PES games (holding down X or Holding down both X + R1)? Cheers and keep up with those nice videos!
Thanks dude, yeah I've always said against legend AI it's best just to fall back in numbers unless you have a formation and more.importantly a attack/defence strategy that works. See the Must Know Tip video which may actually help you win the ball back. Those that hold X should be destroyed as they'll pull players out of position. Draw them onto you (see How to beat Gegenpress video)

Is it necessary or preferable to play with four fingers on the shoulder buttons? There’s so many commands my fingers get confused. And blocking lanes is hard, how do you watch the ball and the player you’re controlling at the same time?

You just have to adapt. There's always ifs and buts mate. You have to be ready. If he fake shots for example, you follow that. You just position your defender so he can't get a shot off. As for defender positioning, I'd use the 433 meta online formation (see video)

Hi Spoony. A common theme in pro evo against cpu is that the defence boots the ball down the middle of the field and it always hits their striker wide open and he has time to turn and run at the cbs. How can we get tight to him and cut out the pass or dispossess him as soon as he gets it or at least challenge him or foul him? Thanks!
Hi spoony, great video as usual, I use super cancel plus the x button on PS4 controller to make it easier to run toward the opponent cause I find it a little hard to run towards the opponent using R1 & R2 only, do you think using R1 R2 plus X is as effective as using R1 R2 only? The way the AI defend gets on my nerves haha just perfectly timed everything. Insane slide tackles with pin point timing and accuracy, just like irl... wait.
Nice insight into the secondary press with 2 players by holdin square when close, ive been doin that a lot if I'm close to them as it helps so much to win the ball effectively. Sometimes though it goes tits up if timed incorrectly leavin ur fridge at the back exposed lol :)
Does it make a difference when you press the shoot button to clear or head on goal? Like if you press too early or too late does it make a difference? Because I just mash the shoot button as soon as the opposition cross comes in.
In PES 2020 I feel like they take way too long before giving the pass so the best way to get posession is to tackle because interceptions are really hard. Nice to hear that they pass faster in PES 2021 and that there is a little bit more error.

Do you play full manual Spoony ? What camera do you use ? I'm using Dynamic Wide with 0 and 10 but still finding it a bit too close ..... despite finding it good for defending and attacking. Just hard to switch play.
Hey nice guide again. :) It is not easy to do always everything okay and AI exploits any mistakes hard (or even not really doing mistakes but other circumstances). You mention high compactness and high defense line again. Altough the ultimate 3-6-1 formation had 2 compactness 8 line. I use this setup in ML and I concede lot of goals in PL (okay I have relatively weak team with 16-17 year old players. :D while in 2nd divison I conceded around 4-5 goals whole season) however just few turn and shoot goal - but in that cases of course I could see much better compactness and manmarking. But maybe it is just the weaker team. I tried 4-1-4-1 with high line&compactness I was not pleased with the result I was much easier counterred and the 1 DMF was not really okay when attack came. However I used default 4-1-4-1 with much bigger gaps between defender line and midfield so the defense looked like a bit empty. It is strange as in other video you recommended it for myclub Legend challenge which I think the default - so it should work maybe not for me. :) You said you would do a formation guide too I am waiting for it. I planned my team for 3-6-1 but if it will be a problem later and need 4-1-4-1 I will be able to change a bit probably to beat the World. :) So far Superstar is good enough if I can easily win everything I can think about switching to Legend... Maybe few seasons later where "on paper" at least I have viable team against the big ones. Until that I need to master supercancel and most effective skills... I rarely use skills and it was not effective. But now I will have good dribblers to work with. Need 100 more matches I am getting better and better together with my team (but I miss lot of opportunities and makes mistakes so I deserve the draw or loss despite the "AI strong punish will"). :) I learn new controller grip too to always have my both finger on R1+R2. When I am lazy with SuperCancel I just see what I miss. But ML is so cruel I lose 3-4 matches in a row and I got all bullshit demoralizing goals - deflections, own goal, falling. I feel myself cheated so demoralizing. Okay that makes the final season result more realistic... and make the game difficult - not the brilliant AI... Yeah probably good player can solve these problems too that's why I dont need Legend to lose hard. Funny that my skill is the same but the result is so different. It is not me who forgot playing lol. But probably need 2 level more skill to win that games too... and it is not even legend. Maybe game will be less cruel with better team let's see in the next season where my management probably wants to win the title lol. They will be disappointed. Ahh lol I forgot my season goal was 6th place not 7th so I failed by 1 point lol. That was the last 3 games easy loss... now I understand lol. No money for the minus salary and I do not have save. What a bullshit :) That ruined my only chance to even extend my contracts LOOOOL. Raging out...

It's almost the same as OGS v PSG but different team selection. However when Bruno came on he didn't play as far froward this time (like VDB) so turn off counter target

I actually prefer without but love his work. If you're asking why...it's cuz the AI in cup competitions go crazy even when drawing 0-0 in the final 20 leaving themselves open as they go all out attack.
Mr Spoony. What I’ve learned from your tutorial is that am Not qualified to play it on SS setting( played Burnley as LFC at Home, couldn’t get one bloody shot on target) Dropped it Top Player setting, n Beat MAN City at the Etihad, 4-0 far too easily. What do I do?!!?
I suck at defending. Whatever I do the opponent ends up scoring goals... I feel my players are dumb and can't stop balls that gets deflected off their body on to opponent. Can you help me with any one or two methods that I can really stop them from scoring goals
How to defend against lofted through-ball spammers? I'm having a hard time positioning my CB when they are not in the screen. Then, when the ball comes through what do I do to shield, does jockey button help improve shield or just positioning?
I preferred the deep defensive line 8 compactnes and marking instead of tight marking . Counter target will be useful for the target striker especially playing that 80 to 90 minutes , try playing on legend difficulty...whole new level..fully beast mode needed.....😇

There is still a situation where I can't just reach the ball with secondary press and it is when opponent team is winning and he places the four defenders for example wide and just keep the possession with long passing. Especially at the end when the stamina is gone and it is very difficult to run. In that case what will works better? Man marking? Another question: anyone knows how can be possible that in Myclub I faced an opponent with Millesi who had as first formation 3 strikers? I bought him but the game allowed me only to have one.
Previously when the opponent attacks your target and you make the team retreat The color becomes blue, defending the whole team. You can easily extract the ball Either in the current version When you use this method The team gets lost and does nothing and the opponent scores a goal
The tackle at 3:19 is a penalty but due to Konami's code it feels like any foul for or against in the penalty the box is overlooked unless truly mistimed. I don't mean to disrespect your defending but the defender did Body feint your tackle and went down due to contact, hence why the ball still goes through your players' leg. Still appreciate the video, do you know when PES 2022 will be coming?
some of my opponent can guess where i will pass, their player is always there to intercept, i cant shoot at all, i have 53% of winning in division 1, how does they do it, they always can guess, although i pass in different direction where im running to. weird

Honestly doesn't make a difference. The AI just shoves my players off the ball no matter what

Definitely, get rid of DDL and those settings will do you good. FLP and aggressive will help too

The R1 and R2 allow far greater control, yes it's difficult but you'll avoid being stuck behind your opponent

Good question, it does actually matter. Timing has a lot of various aspects to it. Such as height, speed and trajectory.

Do you play full manual Spoony ? What camera do you use ? I'm using Dynamic Wide with 0 and 10 but still finding it a bit too close ..... despite finding it good for defending and attacking. Just hard to switch play.

Hey nice guide again. :) It is not easy to do always everything okay and AI exploits any mistakes hard (or even not really doing mistakes but other circumstances).
You mention high compactness and high defense line again. Altough the ultimate 3-6-1 formation had 2 compactness 8 line.
I use this setup in ML and I concede lot of goals in PL (okay I have relatively weak team with 16-17 year old players. :D while in 2nd divison I conceded around 4-5 goals whole season) however just few turn and shoot goal - but in that cases of course I could see much better compactness and manmarking. But maybe it is just the weaker team.
I tried 4-1-4-1 with high line&compactness I was not pleased with the result I was much easier counterred and the 1 DMF was not really okay when attack came. However I used default 4-1-4-1 with much bigger gaps between defender line and midfield so the defense looked like a bit empty.
It is strange as in other video you recommended it for myclub Legend challenge which I think the default - so it should work maybe not for me. :)
You said you would do a formation guide too I am waiting for it. I planned my team for 3-6-1 but if it will be a problem later and need 4-1-4-1 I will be able to change a bit probably to beat the World. :) So far Superstar is good enough if I can easily win everything I can think about switching to Legend... Maybe few seasons later where "on paper" at least I have viable team against the big ones. Until that I need to master supercancel and most effective skills... I rarely use skills and it was not effective. But now I will have good dribblers to work with. Need 100 more matches I am getting better and better together with my team (but I miss lot of opportunities and makes mistakes so I deserve the draw or loss despite the "AI strong punish will"). :)
I learn new controller grip too to always have my both finger on R1+R2. When I am lazy with SuperCancel I just see what I miss.
But ML is so cruel I lose 3-4 matches in a row and I got all bullshit demoralizing goals - deflections, own goal, falling. I feel myself cheated so demoralizing. Okay that makes the final season result more realistic... and make the game difficult - not the brilliant AI... Yeah probably good player can solve these problems too that's why I dont need Legend to lose hard. Funny that my skill is the same but the result is so different. It is not me who forgot playing lol. But probably need 2 level more skill to win that games too... and it is not even legend. Maybe game will be less cruel with better team let's see in the next season where my management probably wants to win the title lol. They will be disappointed.
Ahh lol I forgot my season goal was 6th place not 7th so I failed by 1 point lol. That was the last 3 games easy loss... now I understand lol. No money for the minus salary and I do not have save. What a bullshit :) That ruined my only chance to even extend my contracts LOOOOL. Raging out...

There's no best really...depends what you want to do and formation etc.

I’m curious why you suggest not to use “deep defensive line” & “swarm the box”; ironically those are the two I use. What advanced instructions do you use?
Depends what formation and team - it varies but I don't use those on Legend otherwise I'd get murdered

I actually prefer without but love his work. If you're asking why...it's cuz the AI in cup competitions go crazy even when drawing 0-0 in the final 20 leaving themselves open as they go all out attack.

Mr Spoony. What I’ve learned from your tutorial is that am Not qualified to play it on SS setting( played Burnley as LFC at Home, couldn’t get one bloody shot on target) Dropped it Top Player setting, n Beat MAN City at the Etihad, 4-0 far too easily. What do I do?!!?

I suck at defending.
Whatever I do the opponent ends up scoring goals... I feel my players are dumb and can't stop balls that gets deflected off their body on to opponent.

How to defend against lofted through-ball spammers? I'm having a hard time positioning my CB when they are not in the screen. Then, when the ball comes through what do I do to shield, does jockey button help improve shield or just positioning?
Super cancel tutorial is what you need.
I preferred the deep defensive line 8 compactnes and marking instead of tight marking . Counter target will be useful for the target striker especially playing that 80 to 90 minutes , try playing on legend difficulty...whole new level..fully beast mode needed.....😇

There is still a situation where I can't just reach the ball with secondary press and it is when opponent team is winning and he places the four defenders for example wide and just keep the possession with long passing. Especially at the end when the stamina is gone and it is very difficult to run. In that case what will works better? Man marking?
Another question: anyone knows how can be possible that in Myclub I faced an opponent with Millesi who had as first formation 3 strikers? I bought him but the game allowed me only to have one.
Previously when the opponent attacks your target and you make the team retreat The color becomes blue, defending the whole team. You can easily extract the ball Either in the current version When you use this method The team gets lost and does nothing and the opponent scores a goal
The tackle at 3:19 is a penalty but due to Konami's code it feels like any foul for or against in the penalty the box is overlooked unless truly mistimed. I don't mean to disrespect your defending but the defender did Body feint your tackle and went down due to contact, hence why the ball still goes through your players' leg.

No idea about 2022. It's hard to see on my phone but I'm sure he does actually make contact with ball as it stops.
some of my opponent can guess where i will pass, their player is always there to intercept, i cant shoot at all, i have 53% of winning in division 1, how does they do it, they always can guess, although i pass in different direction where im running to. weird
