  • Decompression Sickness: The link between Exercise, Fitness & Scuba Diving! Since the inception of diving there has been controversy and lack of understanding about what is and what is not safe to do in terms of exercise around a scuba dive schedule. For many years it was thought that no exercise should be performed 24 hours prior to or after a dive. This was done in a an effort to decrease the risk of decompression sickness for divers. But some interesting studies have been performed over the past 20 years that may prove otherwise. In this episode of Everything Scuba, Lyell looks into the science behind exercise and scuba diving; when is it safe (before, during and after diving), what types of exercises are recommended and why divers should in general look to maintain their physical fitness, and lastly how does all of this tie into the risk of decompression sickness?!

    i have been working out more religiously because of diving .. so this has been a positive thing in my life. the love of diving has helped me in a way I would have not normally done on my own.

    This is great info. As for me, I'm 50 and I run 4 days a week. I've always figured that the better cardio shape I was in, diving would be better. I have run a couple of hours before a few dives I did in Key largo without any noticeable effects, but my max depth was only 17ft. So depth wasn't much of an issue.

    Hy Lyell thanks for this contribution. It would be nice to deepen correlation between diet and DCS risks. Of course vegetarian and vegan diet are helpful to keep your fit and healthy. I will do some research and tell you if I find out something :-)

    Loved your video. I’m following this practice myself. Seemed natural and logical to me to reduce the intensity before and after. Also no wonder to me that the studies show that effect. HIIT training is after all gas exchange training…👍🏻👌

    So I work out daily, usually doing F45 type functional work outs. Cardio, strength, combo days. It’s fun and great. But on dive days I don’t workout at all. A good two tank dive is already going to burn 1000 calories, especially in cold water and shore diving here in Monterey. One thing I always remember is to stay hydrated

      Same for me Mike. After 2-3 dives even in 80 degree water you’ve burned alit of calories. (Even just in keeping body temperature up in warm water you are burning calories.) thanks for sharing your routine!

    Great presentation and topic. Basically if you can make time to get on a bike and cycle more to increase your cardio health you may find great health benefits improving your dive profile!

    Very informative but I would like to know more about the risk of moderate to heavy exercises like push up, burpee 1 hour prior scuba diving. Because I want to get in shape during my liveaboard.

    What do you think about this?
    5:30am-6:30am at gym weight lifting and HIIT training daily
    Noon - 5 doing two dives in Bonaire
    Repeating daily or most days.
    I’m on the island for 5 weeks.

    DAN also reported that most deaths while diving were related to pre-existing conditions that the diver had prior to the dive. If you look at DANS website they recommend to be able to run a mile in under 8 minutes because then you're less likely to die from a heart attack (for tech dives), not because the dive is strenuous but because it can happen at any time regardless.
    I've never heard of exercising before and after a dive but it makes sense if you make an effort to at least walk around. Think about most of your dives and a lot of time was spent sitting in a car then sitting in a boat. After the dive we sit some more to relax and there's usually not a lot of movement.

    I don’t train or exercise before or after diving on the same day. But I stay fit for diving. Sometimes I swim hard during my dives with my oxygenrebreather, so the dive becomes like a training session.
    Equally important as staying fit with cardio training is the food we eat. If we eat shitfood and our arterys clogg up around the heart, it still can cause heartfailure even if we think we are in good shape and fit. So stop eating fastfood and sugar and drink as little alcohol as posibble.

    I usually travel from Ireland to one of the Thai islands each year. So what I’ve taken from this informative and detailed video is the following.
    Prior to a dive, sit on the beach. Post dive, sit at the local bar sampling the local beers. 🍺
    I’m good with that 😀

    Hi I was wondering what is the best way to off gas doing deco or safety stops
    Vertical? or Horizontal ?
    Back in the 60swhen I was learning to dive we had j valves no pressure gage when you were out you were out if the j valve got accidently tripped you were on a free assent singing to the surface.
    We dove on the 60 60 rule, don't come up faster than your smallest bubble ,only use one tank a day ,and unless you bolted to the surface and got a embolism there isn't enough gas in a tank to get you in trouble.
    Also it was taught rool to the left it puts blood thru the heart and into the lungs faster to off gas how does that theory hold up today?

      we learned so much medical that people don't do learning to dive do today
      When I went for dive training I had to do all the medical and pass life guard training including pulling an unconscious diver out of the water and clear the air way and administer artical respiration both in and out of the water before we were allowed to touch a tank (we were
      allowed to snorkel)
      The only time it served me well
      Was in late November 1972
      We were working on the gas line 18miles out in lake Erie i
      It had been blowing for a week with 9 ft waves and we were unable to get to the job site
      The company was in a panic to get the gas flowing again we had about a quarter of the gas field shut off at the junction we were working on
      The waves calmed down to about 3 feet
      My buddy and myself went down when we got to the bottom
      my buddy didn't look right ? there wasn't enough air comming out of his regulator
      He pointed to his chest so I called the dive
      I thought there was a problem with his regulator we would go up fix it then go back down
      Back on the boat it was after 2 o'clock the guys on the boat decided to call it a day
      The company was furious we didn't bring the junction on line
      That night he had a tight feeling in his chest his wife took him to emergency
      He had a collapsed lung
      He was a tough guy he would of gone back down
      I finished the job the next day with another guy
      The company said I did the right thing calling the dive.
      The reason I was wondering if you are suppose to do your safety stops horizontal or vertical is back in the day the US navy was still killing people to figure out the dive tables and medicine has advanced so

    Ok so you can do some jogging 4 hrs after a dive, but what about body temp increase due to the exersize, wouldn't that have an effect on the bubbles?

    In my last comment I mentioned when your j valve accidently tripped and you were out of air you were on a free assent singing to the surface that is not nessarily true wen you came up the regulator let you breathe the remaing less pressure air all the way up .quit a sensation when you take a breath and ther is nothing
