      Imho the olympic archer deserves more respect, because this discipline is way out of her comfort zone. The guy with the longbow is able to aim faster and is used to shoot by "guessing" (yes I know, this ain't 100% correct, but as a fast explain, it comes close to its true meaning). This is actually a lot faster, but lacks on accuracy on the long range. The olympic archer is used to shoot without time pressure on stillstanding targets, you recognize it by the way she aims.

      @@DemonicVelocity Agreed. He is an instinctive shooter so in his wheelhouse. She is used to waiting for the clicker to tell her when to release and had to abandon much of what she knows to play his game and hold her own. She more than held her own and so was victorious in my opinion.

    • @nekochen
      @nekochen 4 года назад +1

      @@WaIIyMaven Look closer. You would think rings were dropped in random, sure, it was partially random for Peter as rings cannot be dropped down the same path if there is already a ring or an arrow obstructing the path. But, for the girl, part of the rings were shown briefly before dropping and her eyes were completely looking upward at it. This whole game was rigged to put Peter at a disadvantage for him to go first, letting the girl see how the game works. Then giving the girl an unfair advantage by completely eliminating the randomness of the drop location. At least the show had the decency to end it with a draw. It was obvious the girl fired the shot way too quick which was unnatural.

  • @philiplau9711
    @philiplau9711 7 лет назад +21

    Both archers had unique challenges:
    Peter went first, and as would be expected, needed a few shots to get the timing of the ring drop down. Whereas Zhang was able to prepare by witnessing not only 20 or so ring drops prior to actually shooting, but also visually seeing the timing of when Peter released to when his arrow impacted in comparison with the height of the rings at the time of release. This is huge. Granted, Zhang arrows are faster (which is also incidentally an advantage for Zhang), meaning Zhang had to take that into consideration when judging Peter's release timing.
    However, as a traditional shooter, it is easier for Peter to shift aim than it is for Zhang. Her weighted stabilizers actually may be more of a hindrance then an aid in this competition. The shooting distance is not very far, I'd estimate 15 yards or so (~9 meters). For a skilled archer, the amount of hold movement (ie... sighting movement) is super small at this range, which negates most of the benefit of a long stabilizer system. If accuracy down to the mm was important, then Zhang's stabilizers would be of benefit, but that kind of accuracy was not very critical in this case. On top of that, although Zhang had a sight, she wasn't really using it. She was using muscle memory to aim and shoot. There simply was not enough time to allow for her to sight as she would typically when shooting an olympic style rig. So, although Zhang's setup might look flashy to someone not familiar with archery, archers know that for this competition, Peter's shooting style and equipment gave him an advantage despite the humble appearance in comparison to Zhang's rig.
    Timing wise though, Zhang had an advantage. Her arrows were likely far lighter than Peter's. Notice how there was very little arrow flex in the slow motion frames. It is likely she was shooting a lower weight tip with a weaker spined shaft (which translates to a lighter shaft weight) than she would otherwise shoot in a 100m olympic competition. Her arrow speed was considerably faster. Just the slow motion frames alone tells you that. But her arrow behavior also suggests she was shooting a much lighter arrow build than she would use in a 100m outdoor olympic competition. Take a look at slow motion shots of olympic archers firing off their arrows and you see quite a bit of arrow flex on launch. That's because they're shooting heavy tips, high FOC, skinny shaft arrows to mitigate wind drift. Peter, on the other hand, must have been shooting a fairly standard arrow build for a typical traditional style archer. The amount of flex is typical of what you'd expect from a finger shooter. Probably in the range of 14% FOC, if not higher, and a 125, maybe 150 grain tip. A well spined arrow for that tip weight, for a roughly 28/29in draw, that's easily a 400+ grain arrow right there. On top of using a heavy luminock as opposed to a standard nock. Meaning higher tip weight needed to spine out properly. Definitely a heavy arrow build. How does the faster arrow speed benefit? It means Zhang has more time to spot the ring, shift her aim, and release. Peter would need to release several fractions of a second sooner by comparison due to slower arrow speeds. Fractions of a second might seem insignificant but it's a big deal when it comes to this particular competition.
    Firing speed was definitely advantage Peter. That was clear from the get go due to shooting style and also evident by the number of shots both archers ended up taking. This, to me, counteracted much of the disadvantage Peter had due to having to shoot first. I don't know if I would say it countered all disadvantage, but some, absolutely.
    Bottomline, both archers had particular advantages and disadvantages due to their setup and shooting style. Neither archer had an overall clear advantage over the other. But both demonstrated great shooting skill!

    The fact is that Olympic bow was shot without proper aiming - no sight was used as it is used to. And she draw bow in advance. In this sense it was not fare. The fact also is that Olympic bow is more accurate - using sight gives big advantage, but for instinctive shooting sight is irrelevant. Both are good shooters in their divisions. Keep it up!

    From this I understood that, the long bow that Peter had has a high rate of fire but a slower projectile ( = slightly inaccurate because of the drop) while the olympic style bow (idk what its called) that the nice Chinese woman was using has slow rate of fire but produces a substantially high projectile velocity which results in a better aim.
    I guess these are fair trade offs between the two.

      Always an enormous pleasure to watch a master . May I ask how many thousands of hours would you estimate that you have trained in your life?

    • @PeterOStecherClassicArchery
      @PeterOStecherClassicArchery  7 лет назад +2

      Thank You! In fact I'm a lazy archer, especially if you compare me with the Olympic Games Winner Zhang Juanjuan. In my opinion, if you found your style and you have trained only your form, then shoot 3 x 3 arrows a day using the right method, you stay sharp. For special challenges like the ring shots, you have to train exactly the difficulties of the game. But, you only can hit fast moving targets well, if you don't depend on any form of sighting, you have to be able to shoot just with focusing on your target - classic style archery. Shoot Straight!

    Why was Zhang using the arrow guide thing? (it's been a while since I've done archery so I've forgotten the name, but the little metal piece that goes over the arrow near the rest and will drop down when at full draw)
    For the trick shot part that musta put her at a bit of a disadvantage, if she didn't pull that extra bit more just before releasing the shot that could have guided her arrow the wrong way or taken off the fletching entirely.
    I guess it's just force of habit from doing competition shooting for so long or something

    Thanks for putting this up. I personal find it very interesting and exciting. While i am watching i cant wait to find out the result. I cant find a reason to dislike this. May be both side has his/herself own supporters, so like 50-50 likes and dislike. The likes/dislike issue does not bother me because both of you are great!
    However after i read the replies, ya English subtitle for the whole show would be very helpful. Or perhaps some may not like the show because they think the result is plan to make the show interesting.

    It appeared that she would draw her bow,,,then the ring would drop in front of her aim. You had to guess and react. I may be wrong,,,but great skill you both displayed. I did not dislike or like the video.

  • @niallguiver2861
    @niallguiver2861 5 лет назад +1

    I suspect she was told where each ring would be dropped and was already aiming in the correct direction - she then "only" has to time the release. I don't believe it's possible to pivot a stabilised Olympic style bow as quickly as necessary if she needed to aim left/right as implied in the clip. It's still very impressive shooting though as the sight etc will have been of very limited use unlike when shooting at a static target. . I'm more prepared to believe it's possible with a traditional bow.

    The advantage of pulling and knocking the arrow then Just waiting for the ring to drop is soo much easier than it is to see the ring then pull and shoot. If both were to wait to visual of the ring, pull and shoot I doubt the Olympic shooter would have any chance but props to both shooters very skillful.

    It feels like you were in a disadvantage position as the one who attempt the challenge first. As you clearly didn't expect how fast the rings were falling at the first few shots. While she saw how hard was it for you to make the shot and hence she got the time to adjust for herself.
    Perhaps they should've let both archers do a few practice shots before attempting the real challenge?
    All in all, it is good performance for both side, kinda demonstrated the pros and cons of traditional longbow vs modern olympic bow.

    I find it interesting that with enough technological assistance, a young static-stylized expert archer can match score to a more experienced, intuitive master archer. This speaks to the technology as much as it does to the archers, and it speaks to the situation presented them. Of course, both are amazing at the art. Still, if I were in the wild in a survival situation, I would prefer to have Peter as a partner, because his style and experience are more fitting to a dynamic environment. Each has its place and purpose.

      Thank You Sir! I think, the high trained mind, her ability to concentrate and the 100% training discipline of Zhang Juanjuan won. She was as good as she was not because of her more high tech equipment, but compensating it's disadvantage in this situation with her great shooting skills. It was a honor to shoot with her. You are right, I'd prefer my longbow tackle in the outdoors or dangerous situations. Best Wishes & Shoot Straight!

    You have to determine whether you're going to track or trap first, then you've got to get the timing down. Both of these factors put Peter at a disadvantage. The young lady was able to watch which strategy to use, and then get the timing down, giving her a substantial advantage, imo. They should have had her facing away while Peter was shooting. Whatever, this was an incredible demonstration of reflexes and skill by both of them.

    I shoot both olympic recurve and traditional recurve & longbow and I can tell you that it is actually way easier to hit the rings with the traditional bow because you kind of have to flick. olympic recurves are quite heavy to move with the stabilisers and you usually aim through the sight. while with the trad bow you are quicker on the move - especially if you aim instinctively. therefore: tons of respect for her, she did exceptionally well. Of couse same to Peter who is inspirational in every level.
