Can You Make a Sailboat From Hardware Store Materials? DIY Plywood Sailboat/ PD Racer Build.

- I really wanted a sailboat so I decided to make one from 3 sheets of plywood, construction adhesive, materials from my local hardware store and some bits from a thrift store. The boat I made is almost a PD Racer, the only difference is the bottom template I used is a tiny bit different. You can find lots of plans for PD racers online, I used ideas from many of them as well as the bottom measurements and some concepts from Michael Storers OZ Racer plans. His plans are very detailed, and a great resource.

I've lost track of how many times I've watched this video, thanks for such a comprehensive build diary. I'm almost ready to start myself.
Nice, I hope you have lots of fun making it!
Great to see dad and son creating together. Always a pleasure watching your videos
Thank you!
Great. To see you bonding with your son , he was beeming .
At exacted zero seconds this video is boring, too easy or too complicated.
You are a very good teacher!
I love this approach of using cheap stuff, improvise and be creative! 👏🏻❤️
Thank you!!
Great boat built there! I have a PD Racer that was built perhaps 6 years ago. Got it from another guy. These boats are really fun and since I am storing this in my garage, I am expecting to sail it for the rest of my life. i am 100% certain that this is the cheapest boat you will ever have - both in material cost, storage and in maintenance! I am wishing you many happy days ahead!
Yes, I really like it. I wouldn't mind it 2 feet longer though so my family could fit a little more comfortably....ah well, if I ever see plywood at a good price again, I might try it.
I live in Florida and don’t have a boat. I’m going to have to build this with my grandson.
Definitely!
That looks like some AMAZING father son time. That is always a win. Cheers
Definitely a win!
That's exactly the kind of boat I have in mind to build someday.
Definitely worth it.
Not a carpenter? Inconceivable!
Great video Chris! I lack the skills to ever accomplish something like this, but hopefully you'll let me take it out someday so I can test its durability :)
Hehe. Well, now that you've seen the video, it should be no problem for you:) We can do a canoe Vs sailboat race.....
@@LostWax2 Good sense of humor in the comments. One lucky guy, I envy you get to share this with your kids, I had a disastrous divorce and finally parental alienation from the mother, they don't talk to me anymore.
Simply Fantastic 😎
Grandpa's tools are gems
Great job and video. Love the narration. So many have silent fast videos that lack explanation.
Yours is very helpful and effective. Congratulations.
Thank you, glad it was helpful!
To get an accurate 90 degrees angled hole without a drill press you can create a simple jig consisting of a cube where you just cut 1/4 of it off creating a squared "L" shaped block, then start drilling with the bit resting on the groove as a reference, then remove the block mid drilling and go as far as you need, works best with longer drill bits
Ooh, that's a great, simple solution, thanks!
Another, even EASIER one is to take any CD, set it over the hole location with the shiny side up, then look at the drillbit as it reflects on the CD, your eye can see if it's off angle (i.e. the "two" drillbits will look like an intersecting angle, instead of a straight line), straighten as necessary and drill away. Samurai carpenter is where I got that, I doubt it his original idea, but it works well for any orthagonal/perpendicular/90° drilling!
i have Mik's OZRacer plans and have been looking at building ity "on the cheap". Thank you for the video. Well done.
I'm glad the video was helpful! Mik's got a ton of great info in those plans, well worth the $ just to see the processes he uses. I am super happy with both the weight and durability of my build so far- though it has only been out for one season, and I haven't been in a strong wind yet.
Always late to the party .... so love your projects and videos
Well, glad to have you at the party, even if you're late!!
Wow! Paul Pfeiffer from the Wonder Years builds boats now! Fantastic videos! Much love!
😂 Thanks!!
You did an awesome job, Lost Wax.
Thank yo so much!
I assume you will do a bang-up 2nd. video adding the cool grey foamy stuff to all the boat parts that all your other things/creations are made with?
😂 Well, it would add flotation!
@@LostWax2 We used your methods to make really cool buoyancy "cushions" for a sailing canoe.
Four layers of EPS foam laminated to the curve on the inside of the boat, shaped with rounded corners - then EVA foam on the outside to make a really neat - non squeaky - and nice to touch surface. Each side about 80lbs buoyancy but very little weight.
It is your tech all the way!
Thanks Chris!
@@MikStorer That's so great, I love it when ideas can crossover into a completely different space!
I enjoyed watching this so much, thanks for giving us a reason to smile. Your son is going to be as handsome as you are, growing so fast too!
The boat looks so cute, but not much can compare to a canoe!
Yep, he's grown up so much in the last little while. Gotta get as much time making stuff together before he leaves home!
@@LostWax2 true, they do grow up so fast! Enjoy each moment together and create good memories he can take with him...hugs and your family is great.

You did a great job with this video. I hope you get a lot more viewers and subscribers, you are a natural at making YT videos. I enjoyed the screw clamp tip. I am saving your video to my small boat playlist.😃😃👍👍
Thanks so much! Glad I could provide a helpful tip:)
LOVED the video, by the way!!! =)
Thank you! 😃
Are you sure you’re not a carpenter?! Well done!
Hehe, not till I've built myself a house:) Thanks Denise!!
You have inspired me to go out and build a pdracer!
Cool!! I hope the build goes well and you have tons of fun sailing!
pengerjaan yang akurat. tapi dan berkelas. salam👍
I have really enjoyed your dry humour in these boat related videos, so thanks very much Chris.
I watched the cheap canoe one ages agp (was that pre Covid? (I think so). A disclosure: I have both these plans from Mik Storer, but slacko that I am I have yet to build one. I did build my own modified version of a super heavyweight Pirogue that I made with my excellent boat builder of a brother who was my skipper about some 50 years ago, and for him, but he and his cactus back found it too heavy (no surprises there.
I'm very interested in any feedback you may have on endurance of the build especially given that it's not epoxy based. After an over exposure to epoxy I am trying to avoid too much of it anymore. I do seem to get rashes even thinking of opening thise A and B bottles.
So, I have started looking at as much PVA/TB2 0r 3 boat builds as I can. After you've had a bit of time on the water with the kids can you post an update to youtube for us? It would really help me to grasp my inner building of 'finished' boat demon.
cheers mate Aye.
wow fun project with family
Good video!!! Good sail boat!!! Great adventure!!!
Thanks!
Glad to see your trusty ping pong table survived another awesome project. Great video!
and I didn't even cut into it this time!
I love you “boat”!
😁
"Poor mans fiber glass" thats got me laughing hard.... I feel like its more like Carbon fiber though 😂
This is so cool!
Thank you! Thanks for watching:)
Your clamps are awesome .
Yes, they work really quite well. Gotta love those Kreg screws.
Can you make a dingy with a sail in a place that sells everything to build a HOUSE with... LOL
Amazing!
Thanks!!
Great video!!! I have a question. What size are the skid strips for the bottom of the boat?
If I remember correctly, I think they are 3/4" square
Thx.
I feel like this is one of those projects that sound quick, cheap and easy but then it ends up taking a lot of time, money and effort to take it to completion haha
Yeah, it's not something you're gonna do in a weekend, but I was surprised how much faster a build it was than my canoe, I think mostly because I didn't use any epoxy, so I did a lot less sanding.
I'm looking to buy an angel gauge like the yellow one you use in this video - what is the brand and where did you buy it?
It's just one that was passed down to me from my father, not sure where it came from.
Bow transom?
Good job! I thought the screws on the clamps would get glued in permanently.?
Hehe, that would be an interesting look:)
AWESOME INDEED!!!
Thanks Michael!
I often use plywood pads to secure patches. Kreg screws? You must be made of money! Just make a big enough hole in the pad so as not to engage the thread of an ordinary wood screw.
Hehe, Definitely not made of money or I wouldn't be making this boat:) but, yep, that's a good alternative. Of course the screws are reusable, so you really haven't lost anything if you have a use for them afterwards.
Yes. All boats are made with hardware store materials
“Submarine” is an adjective, usually describing a vessel; in your case, describing paint, for use under the sea.
In the sense in which your pun used it, it’s a nominalised adjective; the noun has been dropped.
An entire 8 ft Sabot can be made from 1 sheet 1/4 inch plywood and 1/2 sheet of 3/4 inch plywood
That's worth a look. I do have a sheet of 1/4 inch left over from this build......
I went to of racer web site only found plans for the hulls bottom curve. Where did you download your plans or can you pm me and email me a copy
I actually made up my plans, taking ideas from a bunch of different places. I think I've put all the relevant measurements in the video where I have the little animation of the boat.
Wow...
5200 marine adhesive 😉
im would totaly build this but my grandad never had a tablesaw...
That could be a problem.......
See Australian Goose sailboat
Yes! The OZ Goose adds another 4 feet of length. I'd love to make it someday as it's a bit tight with my whole family in the boat:)
You should use stainless...
😁
your son is cute
Sailboat? Okay, it floats, but...???😢
This is so cool!
