If you take fins and tail strait off as soon as ya catch it helps to get rid of ammonia. Good catch mate.

Dom, soak all strong fish in milk in the fridge overnight, but, better if soaked longer, change milk every 12 hrs. Turns, the poorest tasting fish to lovely tucker. Learned from an old Italian.

Only fish I would recommend to freeze before eating. When it thaws all the ammonia is extracted, leaving one of the best fillets you can eat from the ocean. I've caught a dozen or so over the years, im 53yrs old, only last 10 yrs I worked out freezing b4 eating the gummy hands down.

Definitely my favourite from the fish n chip shop mate. Flake is awesome. I remember that smell when a mate and I caught heaps in Tassie. Back when there were no boat and bag limits. You lucky bugga. Would love some flake right now. Well done mate. It was a great day out for you. 🍻👌

Hi Dom an other way to get rid of the ammonia smell is to chill or freeze the fillets before you cook them. Being do it for years.

I recon they test better after being frozen for a couple of days, although generally can’t help myself and eat fresh haha

Gday mate cant complain about that haul ,stonker whiting and a good gummy as well wish you had been able to show how to get rid of that ammonia smell ,years ago i caught some small bronzies in townsville but they stank so much i chucked em ,tell me why dont you keep the butter fish do they not taste any good ? Another great fishing adventure at the moment we are getting plagued by baby snapper as we are still under a ban from catching them they were in plague preportions last time i went out had to move a few times .

Thanks alot mate. Yeah the ammonia smell and taste can be hard to digest, lucky mine was perfect. Butter Fish okay, however when chasing the better fish, I throw them back

gday mate were under a ban on catching them until 2026 that will be a six year ban and they may extend it for another 3 years
