In the pre-game interview Southgate was asked what he says to the team before they go out on the pitch for a game like this; he flat out said that he doesn’t say anything; that he leaves that to Harry because in his experiences as a player the team manager often can make the situation worse…this for me is the number one reason why he should go; can you imagine Pep, or Klopp sitting silently in the corner of the dressing room before any game let alone a WC semifinal? This also suggests that there was an unfair amount of pressure put on Kane to win this game, that pressure obviously got to him. I don’t blame Kane for this missed pen, I blame Southgate for his lack of leadership.

What a ridiculous comment and shows how little you know about leadership, coaching and high performance. Ask yourself why so few past England managers have done so well? Ask yourself why players hated playing for their country before Southgate? Ask yourself why other countries now respect how we play? But there's no excuse for bringing Grealish on or any other player for that matter with 1 minute of injury time left in a WC QF. How is that decision remotely going to affect the game. Your throw the bloody kitchen sink at it. Take defender or 2 off and get attackers on. All out attack and go for the goal you need. It's all or nothing at that point. He's done the same thing in 3 major competitions in a row, hasn't got a clue about game management. It was purely psychological reasons why he missed that penalty. That is the difference between great players/great teams and average teams - great players/teams rise to the occasion. They lacked the killer instinct to finish off their opponents.

I think talking about the penalty miss is irrelevant, because whether he misses it or not, England should not be relying on a penalty kick to win a football match, they should be winning it in open play by playing good attacking football. I feel like it’s the same old story, of England just not setting up to win the game by outplaying the opposition and instead setting up to defend and play a dogged kind of game, where they hope to snatch the win. It’s the same strategy every time England play against decent opposition in a meaningful game and we’re always relying on decisions and things going our way, instead of taking the game by the scruff of the neck and trying to actually play creative and intelligent football to win the game on our own terms. We’re always relying on luck and it always costs us.

As soon as we were chasing the game at 2-1 he should have stuck Wilson on as a second striker, put Rashford and Grealish on too (kept Saka on as our most threatening player - he had the French players rattled) and gone for it. Instead he takes Saka off, sticks Mount on and puts Grealish on with 2 mins to go. Kane plays everywhere but upfront, so with Wilson on ahead of him there would be someone to link up with. No plan B
and we would have only been level! Woulda needed another pen probably as we couldn't put anything together in open play for 90 Mins. Poor ref decisions for quite a lot of the game also?

I am a big of Kane fan, but I agree about Jordan's view on Kane and it has been apparent for Kane over the past 18 months. However, Southgate appears to be a manager who has his favourite players, such as Saka, Rice, Maguire and Pickford, and does favour a more aerial style of play at set pieces at times, which does not necessarily suit Kane's general style of play. I also agree with the first caller who indentified some selection issues with Rashford not being started, and it appears Southgate has decided that Rashford, Sterling, Grealish and most likely Kane will be subs going forward if he remains as Manager. However it would seems that Southgate is unhappy with his treatment over the past 18 months, and may resign in the coming weeks.

Simon has never had to face pressure like that, none of us have. Kane had the bottle to score the first, but not the second? Makes no sense. In the recent interview with the Qatar spokesman, Simon and Jim bottled the big questions and were simply too soft, a bit like they accused Piers Morgan a few days earlier with his Ronaldo interview. 4 years ago in the same round he scored a penalty in the game and in the shootout vs Colombia.
He's taken 13 pens in games against other top 6 teams and scored 12 of them. The only that was saved? Against Liverpool, where he scored a penalty to draw the game some 10 minutes later.

When Trezeguet missed his penalty kick against Italy in the 2006 World Cup final, nobody in France blamed him for the loss. In fact, they offered him words of comfort and encouragement. When Harry Kane missed his penalty kick, English analysts and fans blame him, along with the referee and the coach.

French players could afford to miss penalties without blame as you have modern color film and photos of triumph. So when a player misses yet another crucial penalty, particularly the captain and 'leader' that means we have to remain in that grey nostalgic monochrome world indefinitely. Unlike Trezeguet who scored the winning goal at Euro 2000, merely six years before his miss, there will be a fair amount of people not ready and willing to offer comfort to that English player.

Simon Jordan as usual taking the easy option. Saying Kane ‘bottled’ the penalty and that’s what he’s there for’, is dismissing what elite sport is about. Kane is one of the best penalty takers around and gives you the best chance of scoring, but pressure affects the best. All the great players have missed penalties in world

harry kane doesn't play at the elite level, any player who doesn't compete for champions league finals and premier leagues is going to miss, if your used to scoring in the biggest of games he score both penalties, i remember maradona applauding gerrard at old trafford for hitting the post in his 3rd penalty, he scored his first 2 and the 3rd hit the post, maradona applauded him because he knew how difficult it was

Kane is a top class player, that's not even up for debate. However, he's proven to not be a big game player for both club and country. The CL and Euro's finals for instance, he needn't have bothered turning up on both occasions.
Without him against Italy we would have lost 1-0. His brilliant pass to Trippier led to the goal we scored against them.
@RolandDeschain That's because from about the 20th min we put 10 men behind the ball and prayed we could just hold on and after they equalized, prayed we could hold on for pens. Also put in a v neat cross for stones late on who narrowly missed with his head. To put it simple, playing negative non attacking football and parking the bus = little to 0 chances..
