Elliot: If someone has access to The Criterion Channel you can stream a film to see if you actually love it then make that purchase of their Blu-ray. Even if you buy during the 50% sales you can still make better choices rather than spending money for a maybe film. Enjoying the channel so far.

@@ElliotCoen Surely BFI offers a bit of that in its streaming service? And MUBI UK as well? Though, honestly, I tried a MUBI sub and never watched it. Real life puts a lot of demands on my time and The Criterion Channel is a better fit for me.

Been a Criterion Channel subscriber from beginning, and it is fantastic. A great companion to Criterion's discs, and the two formats have a synergy. For example, just last night watched Kagemusha on the channel and now it's on my select list of Criterion blu ray titles to purchase in future. Also, some of the Criterion titles that I've watched on the channel have been disappointing and so I'm glad I got to watch it and form an opinion; will definitely save me money and heartache when purchasing discs.

Sometimes you can get leads from reading booklets in blu-rays. For example, when I watched the Masters of Cinema disc of 'Simon Killer' the directors comments in the booklet led me to the work of John Cassavetes, who I'd been oblivious to up to that point. Result!

I wanted to really thank you for your content Elliot. In January, your channel was one of my first discoveries when I started expanding my boutique collection and I have taken your interests in some blind buys like A Matter of Life and Death. I really need to get The Red Shoes (but might wait for the 4K). I would also add that HBO Max has a tab for TCM films and many of these are Criterion, which is a great source for viewing before you potentially buy physical. Keep up the great content.

I agree with you on the Letterboxd reviews, but then again it is easier for people to digest an opinion when it is encapsulated in a bite-size line or paragraph. The downside is that it doesn’t always starts an engaging conversation between individuals that may further expand their feelings towards it.

Elliott: Your channel has been a terrific help as I have used much of my time during the pandemic to discover new films.
To single one highlight, I took your advice and watched Barry Lyndon. I enjoyed it tremendously, much more than I once would have imagined possible. In fact, I now own the Criterion Blu-ray edition. 😁
Regarding your tip about about watching movies on discs, that is very true.
Over the weekend, I watched the new Paramount Presents version of Nashville. I've seen the movie before (in fact, I also own the Criterion version). However, Paramount's improved transfer made it really great to watch the film all over again.
The improved colours and crispness of the picture helped me enjoy the movie far more than any previous time I've watched it.

I might be showing my age here (61), but might I suggest there are some fascinating books written about film. For example 5001 Nights at the Movies by Pauline Kael is an alphabetical by title compilation of shorter reviews she wrote for the New Yorker, I believe. But also her books Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and I Lost it at the Movies which are longer more in depth essays about movies which, even when you disagree with her opinions are enlightening. I'd also recommend Andrew Sarris' book American Cinema as a good starting point for a person wanting to learn how to think critically about movies. Also I generally follow directors so if you like Capra , you might like Cukor, or Lubitsch, the list could go on for literally a lifetime.

You're certainly right about finding people you understand to help you find films. My guy was Roger Ebert. I didn't always agree with him or his preferences, but it got to a point I could tell if him giving a film a good review meant I would like it or that I would hate it--and vice versa. Or if a bad review from him meant it might suit me. I could do this because most of the time he would say what was good and what was bad about a film. These days, most people who do "criticism" are just talking about if they liked something or not. That means nothing; it means less than nothing if I don't know you and don't know what the depth and breadth of your film knowledge is.

Definitely, when someone is recommending a film, I really appreciate when they give a description of the film, in terms of what kind of filmmaking it is (i.e. it's kinda slow, but thought-provoking and cerebral) and what the story feels like (i.e. sci-fi, and it also has aspects of tense political drama) so I can get a better idea of what the film is like so I can make a better judgement as to if I would probably like it or not. I also appreciate when they outline what it is about the movie that appeals to them (i.e. I thought the action was exciting and it had a lighthearted sense of humor that I found very funny).

It's all very well to mention the Criterion Collection. I live in the UK and every time I click on a Criterion title it sends me to Amazon. I for one have no intention of lining Mr Bezos' pocket for vanity space flights, so these titles are effectively closed to me. So, for instance, while I would never say that every Humphrey Bogart movie is a masterpiece, he's one of those actors who chose/shaped the roles he played very strongly. He worked with the greatest directors of his time and had a say in scripts. There are about 14 well known Bogart films that most classic film fans watch, but there are about that many more really good that he made. Some of the less known great films he made include. Dead End, Angels With Dirty Faces, Dead Reckoning, Beat the Devil, Dark Passage, Passage to Marseille, High Sierra, and We're No Angels.
