Dress Historians aren't the only ones who can have fun deep-diving into pop-culture garment analysis! Looking at the cream of the crop when it comes to men's TV and Film sweaters this week. 😍
I'm crying. I'll never forget Mr Rogers. I was an adult with small children but he filled a sore hole in my heart and gave me faith that men could be kind, masculine and caring without carrying a gun or wielding a threat. Down the line I found my own Mr Rogers because Fred Rogers showed me where and how to look. And he wears zippered cardigans.
Damn it. Tears. My dad was in the military and away a lot. Mr. Rogers was my surrogate dad. I grew up to learn more about the man he was and was even more impressed. Thank you.
I've always found fairisle, argyle, and even those leaping reindeer sweaters to be quite classy. Anything is ugly if you knit it out of clashing colors and squeaky acrylic yarn, but I find the "ugly sweater" trend heartbreaking when I see gorgeously-worked, elegant sweaters being categorized as ugly because they dared to be more than one color.
I come from a knitting family. Three of my grandparents were born in Scotland. There was no thought about me learning to knit. I was already making hats, scarves and mitts by the time I was five. We always had homemade sweaters. My Grannie would make up her own patterns and so did my Mom. They were never sitting without knitting. Even visiting on Christmas I still have the Mary Maxim sweater, with the Bison on it, that my Mom made in the 1950's for my Dad. Have you ever made White Buffalo wool sweaters. They were really big in the late seventies early eighties. Great for the prairie winters. Oh yeah how about that beautiful cable sweater Cameron Diaz wore in Love Actually ❣⚘
Good catch! The striped baby onesie in the movie is *chef's kiss* Also the matching hat Sarah puts on when she's telling the story of The Girl and The Goblin King. Both awesome machine knits 💜
‘Mens’ sweaters really do fit better. Mum made dad one for when he was in the navy. It’s cream, and sleeves are long enough. It’s so odd but it’s like it was made for me. It was given to me recently by him and dear god he looked after it well. It was made in 1989 and had literally only one tiny issue. It looks like she made it yesterday. He wore it all the time on patrol boats. It was proper wool so it’s so damn warm. I recently bought my family Aran sweater pattern. Which is delightful buuut I have to rewrite them out by line rather than panel. I am of the Burke clan. It’s going to be a project mum and I work on, but we have radically different tightness. I knit v tight, she knits more loosely. I have to change the needle size it’s that bad. So we need to work that out.
I am so happy that you find the hand knitted Christmas sweater endearing. My great niece gets one every year so that she can decorate the tree with her mum. Some were most definitely leaning towards the revolting. Birdy
Your pillows! I love them! Now the real comment...it’s so true how much the fashion and retail industry has appropriated native designs for many decades. Mr Rodgers is an Icon, he was our 2nd Dad! I clicked in your video expecting a whole snarkety run down of sweater fashions and you did not disappoint. But hearing you talk about Fresh Rodgers I got all joked up and even a little teary eyed. RIP Fred Rodgers.
Some might argue that Chris Evans is this generation's Fred Rogers. If he made childrens' content. And there wasn't a Tom Hanks (who, funnily enough, is apparently related to Rogers...explains a lot!) 😄
@@MaireColclough stop! You had me at Chris Evans, lol. I didn't know Tom Hanks was related to Fred Rodgers.
