John. You make this sound way better than I ever could! I hope you enjoyed making the video, I really liked listening to it. Outrageous tone and playing. Quite insane to think that those tones live inside of it.... Excellent work.
I solved that "problem" with an Tone King Iron Man mini reactive load/attenuator. Now I run it cranked and bring the volume down to T.V. volume, or with I.R.'s and headphones/monitors. Problem solved! Authentic Marshall 2203 tone from this one. I have the head. I like how its lighter and a smaller footprint.
I set my mine up with an attenuator, I can play until 4-5am and NOT bother anyone. And I live in an apartment complex. No complaints, and I get the exact tone I want to my live playing. I freaking love it. 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽 I have the head running a 212 cab at 150w.
Is that intro track yours? I really liked it, especially that tension chord between the A and the B minor (was it F#/A#? Or A# dim?). Once again I'll say it seems to me that playing through a real amp seems to bring out a little extra something in your playing!
Old metal guys used to scoop the mids for "best" sound. When in fact I found out they were just actually flatening them. Jcm800 have very big mid hump and its good to have them low for nice and balanced sound. Around 4 5 at max. Everything above sounds louder but not better. For volume turn up the Volume XD
@@aliengrey6052 Its pretty close. I don't play as distorted as this example....but overall satisfied with the results. ruclips.net/video/AUG3rN6Qgh0/видео.html
Do you have any experience in using the SC20 with a Helix for effects (via 4 cable method)? Ist it working well and is the amp reacting the same way on a for example Tubescreamer in front as in real?
Gonna be more upfront but I think a better long term value is an old 100 watter and the same load box. Or honestly a jtm 45/100 with a pedal sounds great at any volume imo
I don't know what the clone situation in the UK is like but in the US they are plentiful second hand and seem to retain zero value. I guess if you don't already have a load box then maybe if ends up being a lot more expensive but this doesn't exactly scream bedroom volumes to me
I have several modelers and amps (I use a torpedo live with the amps for recording ). I find inspiration in both really. I would say that my amp’s with the torpedo have a more authentic tone... but that is not necessarily better. Some of my favorite noodles have been on modelers (funnily I play my older pod modelers more than my helix).
I got super excited about the tones you got with the strat (5:20 - 6:20). Too bad the _tiny_ problem is what makes this amp pretty useless for me now. All though, I had the real deal 100w JCM800 with 4x12 as a "bedroom amp" when I was something like 12 years old. Wasnt that bedroom friendly rig either. 😅
Hey Arch! That's the thing, I feel like you'd maybe have to be gigging for it to make sense, or using an attenuator? Or I guess a volume pedal in the loop or something
I was the same,I had a 2203 head and 4 x 12, bought for almost nothing from a bloke who had it in his garage and don't know what it was. (unfortunately I sold for not much more when I was hard up). I've scratched my Marshall itch since with a class 5 and even that has to be on the 1 watt mode at home to get it to drive.
Wonderful playing John...your Volume pot...what type is it? Mine on my Strat is not as gradual as yours...what am I missing here? Audio taper 250K for a Strat, correct? ...and this amp has a 10" Celestion? ONE 10" speaker"...??? The tone from a 10 is just jaw-dropping...really?
I'm lucky enough to be able to play my 2204 at home at volume, but this would be nice for live. It's usually easier for me to be able to play loud at home than in a live environment.
Hi John, great playing and love the videos. I am thinking of moving over to amp modelling with the FM3, but would still like to occasionally run my JVM1 head like you are here with the 800, via load box, then into the fractal. Please could you describe how you set this chain up or do a quick video if possible? May thanks, Nick.
Oh true, I also got the SC20C, but it‘s quite loud if you want to reach the sweet spot tones. Any attenuator you‘d recommend, that’s not changing the tone too much?
Love your style John. I’ve got this amp and it is too loud for my bedroom studio. What amp would you suggest would sound the best for rock AC/DC styles at home? Combo or head I don’t mind. Or do I have to look at using pedals? Cheers!
I have the SC20h (JCM 800) and the SV20h (Plexi) and neither of the two amplifiers i can use without an attenuator. I think Marshall chose them to be loud enough for small gigs rather than low enough for bedroom playing. I agree that marketing could be different. But think: It will be worst if its not loud as a Marshall need to be. On the other hand, they are much more controllable than the 100w ones and remember that Marshall amps need to be loud for the magic to happen.
I have one of these I use at home. Can’t get the volume past 3 and need to pretty much crank the bass and cut the treble to almost 0, but I love it! Setting the amp for way too much gain and rolling off the guitar volume is another workaround I found. And using the helix to cut volume is another one. I should probably consider an attenuator though lol!
Mine never passed 2 at home and that is with a TwoNotes Captor. However, I use an MXR 10 band in the loop to shape the sound further to get into heavenly territory.
I have the Marshall Origin 20 and I struggle to get up to a drive level that would get any tube crunch even on the 0.5 watt power setting without my kids shouting at me! John I’m interested in your upper body garment, it looks like something more suited to arctic conditions! Don’t know why but it also reminds me of the video for the Bloodhound Gang - Bad Touch. I had one of those and yeh, same situation - it's a bit of a weird one because you sort of end up with an amp that's too loud for home, and possibly not enough headroom for live?
@@johnnathancordy doesn’t bother me too much, I can get all the crunch I need from the pedalboard and it’ll be next month before I get to use it live.
