- In this episode of Heroes in History, we finally take a look at Jiang Jun and his inspiration, the general Guan Yu of ancient China. I had a lot of fun putting this video together and I sincerely hope ya'll enjoy! Please watch the meme montage at the end as I did work pretty hard on this one.

It's funny that Guan Yu, a real human, appears in Smite, a game about gods fighting
he was cannonized as the chinese god of war in the ming dyansty.
He was just that awesome
It's because people worship him as a god.
Real life Sigmar or Talos, a man ascended to godhood.
Great warriors and generals always get defied.
I feel like Apollyon would have nothing but respect for Guan Yu.
Nah, Guan Yu is all about Brother Hood and honour, and a strict code on non-betrayal.
Everything Apollyon stood against.
Maybe it is best said that Apollyon have respect for Guan Yu for his battlefield intelligence, like what she did with Daubeny.

nah Cao Cao is all about order, to reunite the fractured empire and instill discipline in a Centralized Government. So that the Empire and recuperate from warlord selfishness and Enunch corruption. Sure his method may involve lots of betrayal and deceit, and he may be considered one of the most talented warlord of human history, but an eternal war isn't his end goal.
Apollyon is war for the sake of war so that Humanity can evolve. That is why she installs the most brutal and amoral Samurai and Vikings to high power, so that the For Honour Universe will suffer an eternal war.
This always struck me lore-wise: why is the game called For Honor if the main theme is all about Apollyon’s ideology, that war is not about Honor or glory, it’s about our primal instincts to become the strongest. To be the wolves among sheep. I guess you could say the protagonists are the ones who attempt to defy her views and fight strictly For Honor, but what is Honor in this universe?
I love playing JJ as he is just so free flowing using sifu stance to dodge really does make you feel like a master of combat until you get hit in the head by a Dane axe.

The year 4 and 3 heroes should have been first. Most of them only have 4-7 unique executions at most

Maybe after you finish ,,heroes in history" you could start a new series called ,, legends in history" and you could talk about important people of history like Alexander the great,Sun tzu,Oda nobunaga,Miamoto Mosashi,Caesar, Genghis Khan. You could never run out of people to talk about

well, in some capable hands who properly fights with all the tools in his toolkit, JJ is actually amanzing, its just that his light attacks are so spammable and easy to use that people started doing this.
It's about time you talk about the old man. He has been very patient with you, like most generals would.
Now I wondered who would win: Jiang Jun or Centurion? So far the two heroes in For Honor who are leaders of an army.

@@MeisterSchwabbo Technically their characters are leaders: Astrea (Warmonger) and Holden Cross (Gryphon).
Centurions weren't leaders of armies, they were leaders of a century (100 man units) hence the name Centurion, but in my opinion I'd say the Jiang Jun would win simply because he uses a pole arm.
@@lightningher894 yes, and cent doesn't have a shield... whats funny is that they actually planned to give centurion a shield but at the end they decided against it, cause than than the knights would have 2 shield heroes back in y1

@@spook407 Song dynasty schollars wrote with a Shu-Han agenda / biased , makin ga fanfic of history that spiraled out the real of possibility, although a good read raven didn't say what was and wasn't romance of the three kingdoms.
@@a_goblin22 But before the Song dynasty, there was a offical history document on the Three kingdom period called Even if the Song scholards wrote with that agenda in mind, we still have the source material to work with if we want to get a understanding of who he is histrocally.
@@ZinbaForLife the records of the three kingdoms exist, hpwever the mention of guan yu was a frontier general for the Shu-Han, most of his deeds that were popularized in the romance did not happen in history, however he was a compitent leader of his forces and the tales around jing province were probably more of the historical retellings of events

Have you seen the trailer from CoD Warzone with Godzilla and Kong in it? It looks like a cinematic trailer for a Godzilla movie. Anyway, I gonna repeat myself from your live stream, can Godzilla work in For Honor? It's no but would it be awesome to have a Titan size monster in the game? People said "no Godzilla would not fit in a CoD game" but when the trailer came out, a lot of people and CoD Fans were surprised and now are excited for Godzilla and Kong being in Warzone even if they don't fit in that universe. So I guess the question is if Ubisoft put Godzilla in For Honor, would For Honor fans be upset with that, or would they accept Godzilla because Godzilla is awesome?
Well considering there’s literal dragons in For Honor lore, I think it’s not out of the question

Guan Yu being one of the greatest general in the world is quite a stretch.
A fearsome and nigh-invincible warrior, no doubt he was.
But a general?
I personally consider Zhao Zilong (Zhao Yun) to be a true great general (for Liu Bei's side) in Three Kingdoms era.
Beside, while not discounting the peerless prowess of Guan Yu, his exploits were greatly exaggerated in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Heck, even in the same novel, Guan Yu, while mighty, was depicted time and time again to be haughty and grossly arrogant at times.
Furthermore, Guan Yu, as mighty as he was, is well-known for his undeterring loyalty- making him a popular deity for many chinese criminal gangs.
Don't get me wrong, I like Guan Yunchang (Guan Yu), a popular character in the Romance of Three Kingdoms.
He was one of Liu Xuande (Liu Bei)'s most trusted general, because he and Zhang Yide (Zhang Fei) were his oldest and closest confidants from the beginning of his quest to power.
But in term of martial prowess?
Even I, a chinese, know that his exploits were greatly exaggerated.
I could argue that *Xu Chu,* Cao Mengde (Cao Cao)'s tiger general can go toe-to-toe with Guan Yu.
And that's just from Cao Cao's side.
There are plenty more better generals and military commanders from the Dong Wu side.
And subsequently, the Jin side.
...and this is just from the _fall of the Han era._
i would say that Zhang Liao was far more capable as a commander since in real history not romance, there was no talk of amazing warriors, it was all about smart generals and guan yu was wise but he wasn't the brightest as history shows. outsmarted time after time, it's just that all han decline history is romanticized because of Song schollars

And Zhang Wenyuan...the perfect synthesis of cunning and charismatic, valiant and dutiful, candid and yet affable.
Zhang Wenyuan (Zhang Liao) is greatly understated in modern depiction of Three Kingdoms- showing his prowess only at the battle of He Fei.

@@nickypenn5841 if Zhou Yu lived longer he would have shaped up to be a decent commander i would believe, he knew what romance calls "the best and brightest mind of the three kingdoms" was up to and stopped it dead in it's tracks, he put his country into a position where Zhuge Liang could not interfere and Cao Cao could not meddle with iit without Wu profiting.
As a native chinese person, I would not say he is the greatest of all the time in Chinese history like how raven praised, as there are many other generals who have acomplished impossible feats exited before and after him , and also generals who is better than him both in terms of physical prowess or military capabilities. But acording to the Record of the Three Kingdoms, he was one of the top military generals at that time, or the top when looking at both physical prowess and military capabilities.
What we celebrates him for, is never mianly his military achievements like with other generals, but his loyalty and honor which is unmatched against other people of his time.

I have a good feeling that is an old anime
2007 if I remember right
This seems to just be things I'd find in a quick Google search and not an in depth look at what this hero is based off of. And you didn't even really talk about the hero much which I thought was the main focus of these kinda vids.(fix I just came back by the time that weird montage was on and didn't see the 5 minutes on jj)
In my opinion, as a introductory video to the old man, this is probably enough to get people interested and do their own research, possibly due to Guan Yu's figure in both real history and ROTK are both rich in character and detail, which is kinda hard to go deep in a video of 20 minute length. I would recommmend RTK (Records of the Three Kingdoms) for who he is historically, and ROTK(Romance of the Three Kingdoms) for how he is in the literary tradition.
If you're a visual learner, go watch the 1994 ROTK TV series by CCTV(fun fact, nowadays most Guan Yu depictions draws form the actor who played Guan Yu in this TV series) The 2009 Animated series of the same name is also recommedned for younger people who is interetsed. DO NOT WATCH the 2010 TV series as its as bad of an adaptation as the last season of GOT, extended to 52 40 minute epostodes.
