“I was speeding on the subway, through the Stations of the Cross.” What a lyric. I think we have all had days or nights when we have felt like we were going through those Stations of pain and suffering. This song is truly U2’s masterpiece.
*Moment of Surrender* by U2 is not only one of my favourite tracks by this particular band but by any band who has written any song ever. Emotionally, spiritually, and personally relatable - this "Moment of Surrender" was released at a time when I needed some help during a grieving process I had been plunged too deeply, owing to the loss of someone I love and will always love so much... however, it was time to recover. It did not make it easier, as it simultaneously made this specific track undeniably so special, that before this song became an official single, both myself and the woman I loved found this U2 track to be one of our shared favourites of all-time, shortly before her death as this magnificent song made its debut on radio. It was appropriate, it was destined, and I will always cherish *Moment of Surrender* for the rest of my corporeal days on earth. This is the best interpretation i've read about the song: I do not think the song is about "moments" but rather THE MOMENT... the defining realization that we're all living our lives in a catatonic stupour of ridiculousness while the true meaning of our existence is right there in front of us waiting to be grasped. Let me expand upon this interpretation with some thoughts to consider on this absolutely awe-inspiring ballad. "The stone was semi-precious We were barely conscious Two souls too smart to be in the realm of certainty Even on our wedding day" An introduction, demonstrating how our carefree attitude can even be found in our so-called love relationships. The semi-precious stone may refer to the importance we put on the damn diamond ring, and the nonsense surrounding wedding... two souls too "smart" to stop and realize the true meaning of what is happening. To worried about the "busy"-ness of invitations, decorations, thank-you cards... the STRESS! "I was speeding on the subway Through the stations of the cross" The stations of the cross are all around us. For Christians, we've been educated our entire lives to understand that Christ is all around us, manifesting in so many forms. We just fail to see this, rushing around in our daily lives without taking the time for reminiscing about faith, eternity, and the power of our consciousness. We barrel forward through our lives, streaking by the signs all around us. "Every eye looking every other way Counting down 'til the pain would stop" Our common way of fighting the pain in our lives is simply to complain about all the shit piled upon us and wish it would all end... count down the days until things will be better. Maybe buy a lottery ticket and wish, instead of turning back to God and giving in to the true plan and mission of our lives. "At the moment of surrender Of vision over visibility" Probably THE MOST powerful line in the whole song. Visibility is simply the ability of our eyes to look around. But to truly have VISION... to truly see what is meant to be seen around us, to realize what life is truly TRULY about; that is the ultimate answer and the only way we will achieve it is to surrender to eternity and quit confounding our existence with the trivialities, addictions, and "horrors" of everyday life. "I did not notice the passers-by And they did not notice me" A clear indication of the personal nature of this realization; the fact that everyone must experience it in their own way. When the protagonist does, there is a clear separation between him/herself and everyone else around, who are still continuing on through the deadness of life.
This one's in my U2 top three along with Miss Sarajevo, and Streets. Lyrically, this one I think is U2's best. And it's got beautiful melodies as well. That first stanza is definitely about heroin - tying yourself with "wire" and the word "horses" are two explicit references to the drug, which was nicknamed "horse" in the 60s and 70s. But like all U2 songs, each person can take a different interpretation to the lyrics to find their own meaning for their own life.

Where I was when this album was released ... I was in a queue for a music store on Dublin City's Grafton Street for the midnight release 🙂 Not the first time I done this, that would have been for Achtung Baby back in November 1991.
Any human’s “moment of surrender”-if authentic-is an intensely personal, exceptionally intimate experience. It’s as close to the bone as it gets. So a person may be folding to their knees in what is “the” moment for them . . . but passers-by won’t-CAN’T-grasp what is going on for that person. For those others, it’s just another ordinary moment in a day. Similarly, that person wouldn’t be aware of, wouldn’t “notice,” others around him or her anyway. Because the moment of surrender is *that* intimate, *that* internal, and *that* all-encompassing. For the person experiencing it, it’s a private, transcendent moment. That the band captured this reality so eloquently in the lyrics of the melodic chorus is one reason the song is so powerful. Sublime U2 song. Underrated because of the album it’s on.
Personally, I preferred U2’s SOE album over the earlier SOI album. Neither are among my top 3 U2 albums of all time, but SOI had at least a couple gems on it . . . while SOE had more to offer top-to-bottom. I think the latter album worked better because it’s closer to where the band authentically is at this point in their lives. Some brilliant pieces on there. Altho, it’s not a perfect U2 album; I think the flaw in SOE at times is they/Bono were trying *so hard* too imbue the songs with wisdom & message and to “say what needs to be said” that some songs crossed the line into *trying too hard.* A few of the songs suffered under their own weight . . . not achieving that sublime balance of Music + Message + the Intangible that other genius U2 songs/albums have reached. But overall, SOE delivers enough art to justify its existence & then some.
Saw them on their 360 tour in Berlin, Zürich, Vienna and Munich. Munich was a disappointment (like Vertigo Tour in 2005 in Munich). But Berlin concert was amazing, maybe the best concert I‘ve ever seen of them. Such an awesome evening and experience.
Bit late to the party on this one. What a beauty of a song. I think you have it spot on really. I find I can't listen to it too often, it's raw for me and takes me back to a time in my life that's pretty hard to go to. Bono has mentioned that this album was written in third person - I'm not sure to what degree though. But it does feel like a song about someone who is broken as you say or really lost, I think that is spot on, and this picture is painted of the world around them still turning during their broken-ness as the character is on their knees. The vision over visibility line is a killer one. I think you should probably privately check out the film 'Linear' by Anton Corbijn that accompanies this album with each track from the album with an additional gem of a song you shouldn't miss, I think you will both enjoy the film.
