  • Hey Guys! I know it's been a while, sorry for taking so long with the uploads lately. I have been quite busy as I mentioned in the video, guitar-related things (mostly lessons), maintaining the technique, finding the time to compose and things like that.
I made some adjustments to the guitar, and decided to record this video to share with you how it's going and sounding. I basically put a stripe of wood underneath the saddle of the right hand bridge, and changed to the Accompaniment set of the Solera Flamenca Strings. That brought up the tension quite a bit, giving the guitar some more volume in general.
Let me know what you guys think!
Don't forget to press the like button if you liked the video, subscribing if you haven't yet and commenting is a great pleasure for me to read your opinions and thoughts always. I appreciate that!
Stay safe as always, and I'll see you next time!
    Cheers!
    Luciano

These experiments are also fun to do besides playing. I've done many and still doing 😂
Basically the country I live in has no flamenco guitars in the stores neither I've enough money now to purchase a good one shipping from abroad.
I had a cheap factorymade classical guitar which was never satisfactory as a classical one...it didn't have the deep basses or sustain as a general classical has but from the very beginning I used to hear a sharp sound from it though the projection wasn't good.
After many researches online I ripped off the factory super high glossy and THICK finish which was a plastic one. The top is solid so I sanded to reduce the thickness however back and sides are laminated so couldn't do much about that. Then I French polished it by hand.
To lower the action I level sanded all the frets and very very amaizingly enough it didn't have any kind of buzzing even at 3 mm. action so I decided to lower it more and now in 12th fret low E string is 2.8 mm and in the high E it's 2 mm. It has slight buzz which is preferred, not bad buzz.
After the whole month project I was surprised by the changes if it's sound. It now has much better projection than before and even the sustain has increased. The basses bacame more lively, open sounding and trebles sound fuller, it has sharpness but not super skinny like before. I think mainly because of the wood finish changing from thick plastic to shellac, the sound has become unexpectedly better.
I won't say it sounds like a negra but maybe very close to a cheaper negra because it doesn't have classical tone at all. I'm now very happy with it. Hopefully after saving up some money I'll directly upgrade to a luthier made guitar from Spain.
Point to mention due to higher bridge position of a classical setup when I lowered the saddle bone the string angle specially in the trebeles became almost straight having no angle. Drilling another 6 holes for converting to a 12 hole bridge solved the problem. Also a smartphone protector is used as golpeadore (even actual golpeadores are not found here😂)
Sorry for the long comment but I feel happy to share the story😄
Thanks a lot Luciano for every video you post❤️

Wow man! Never heard of someone doing something like that.
Are you really sure about the changes in sound or even does it sound flamenco?

    • @Abid_g37
      @Abid_g37 3 года назад +2

@@juansebastian5706 Yeah Francisco! I recorded the sound playing same pieces before and after the modification project. I used same brand's bass set and even exactly the same treble strings combining high and low tension so the changes are obvious.
And the sound being flamenco or not I can say it's very close to Cordoba or Camps these kind of factorymade student model negras but it somehow has really nice overtones in the trebles which sometimes feels more expensive that it actually is.
Despite the sound I'm mostly happy about the playability. At least I can practice very comfortably now because of it's very low 2.8 mm action. Wasn't expecting its natural limit to be so good being a factorymade classical one.

@@juansebastian5706 Really thanks for the appreciation man😊
Btw I'm not Western. I'm from Bangladesh which is in south east Asia haha.
What I observed is most of the people outside Spain or Europe has a really wrong idea of how flamenco is. I'm lucky to hear the real flamenco from maestro Paco, Vicente, Antonio, Tomatito, Monolo, Camaron and people like Luciano and some others are now very helpful to teach internationally via internet.
I'm very much influenced and working on the right techniques, exercises and also pieces but struggling a bit to learn the different palos and rhythms.
      Thanks again Bernal!

Wow! Good setup! It still puzzles me how even good luthiers sometimes pay so little attention to action. I've seen flamenco guitars from top builders with 3.25 mm action at 12th fret that simply cannot be lowered any more. Add to that a 667mm scale and it becomes the perfect- sounding nightmare... :) It is better to have the opposite problem because you can always put a taller saddle!

I'm constantly messing with the action on my guitars and I use strips of old credit card under the saddle. I find they transmit the sound very well. When I'm finally happy, I cut a new bone of course although, the sound stays the same when I replace the plastic strips with the finished bone.

This is really interesting, I recently had the action lowered on my guitar which is cedar/indian rosewood. I find I sacrificed a bit in terms of volume but I find it more 'playable' particualrly when you don't have so much time to warm up and 'play hard' (as you say). Your guitar sounds beautiful as ever and thanks so much for sharing this journey with us :-). A great tip for raising the saddle aswell!!

Hi! Love the videos and thank you for introducing us to Solera strings. Will try on my classical soon. I wanted to share something that I found out through trial and error after making and setting up many guitars. The strips of wood work ok for raising the action and giving more volume, however, they rob the guitar of a big part of it's tone because it's changing the depth of the saddle slot in the bridge. If the slot is anywhere between 3.0 mm and 3.5 mm deep after installing the wood strips than it's fine. If it's something like 2 mm (or less) or even 2.5 mm the saddle/bridge won't work as intended in the original design. I guess what I'm trying to say is, maybe try to have a luthier make you a new saddle that raises the action to your liking (in this case with this guitar 2.8 mm or 2.9 mm at the 12th fret) and you will see more volume like with the strips but with overall improved tone. Hope this helps!

Interesting comments on the modifications Luciano and beautiful playing. Did you try the guitar before purchasing, or did you order it? If so did you predict you might have to make these changes? When I bought my guitar I couldn't really tell but after a few weeks I came to the conclusion the action is a little too high for my comfort - couldn't tell this at the time of trying it before purchasing.

Hi Luciano, I wanna ask a really important question of mine to which I couldn't find any answer nowhere. I bought a guitar from Spain let say it is a Prudencio Saez and not that much expensive one. I adjusted the action by sanding underneath the saddle and now it's 2.5 mm in the 6th string and 2 mm in the 1st one. However, the top of the saddle is curved-shaped so that the 5th and the 4th string actions, in the 12th fret, are also 2.5 mm (just like the 6th string). And I think that's why my left hand fingers touch the lower strings when I press the upper string. Does my problem have sth to do with the action of 5th and 4th strings. If yes, please tell me the corresponding actions of other string considering 2.5 mm to the 6th string. Thank a lot.
