Some days I head out and feel like I can do just about anything. Then some days I feel like I am just not with it and making little mistakes. That's when I know I better hit the parking lot!
smart strategy
I've been riding for over 50 years. I would rate myself a 6 to 7.5 overall. If I have that heavy feeling 2 miles into a ride it's back to the house for me. When I ride it's 100% or nothing....
appreciate the feedback! Ride safe!
I have a 2007 Yamaha Royal Star tour deluxe, another big bag touring cruiser. (858lbs without the rider) No fear of it at all, the key is proficiency in slow-speed maneuvering. Keep in mind it works the same as a Honda Rebel 250, you use the friction zone, and gyroscopic effect all motorcycles rely on to keep the bike upright. I've been riding 25 years and the way I learned was the same stuff Robert Simmons and Jerry Palladino talk about. I had the same advantage they had, I was trained to ride in police motorcycle school more than two decades ago, and every year since then recertification school with the dept. Get a good mastery of the basics such as that, work on more advanced stuff, and constant practice will take your riding to a new level and your enjoyment of your bike and riding like you never thought possible. Finally NEVER think you know it all! The way I approach it for myself is that it is a continual learning process, no matter how long you've been riding.
outstanding feedback!!!!!!!!! 🙏🏽
Robert has changed the way I slow maneuver for sure! Right hand slow turns are my Achilles heel!
Great video 🥓✌🏼
He’s really good!!!! Fry that 🥓! Gracias el bacon master 🤡
I know that I'm late but yeah I know that area, in the BIG Easy lol.
Yeah my first big bike was an eye opener. Went from a Interceptor to a KZ 1000. Then my LEO (Oakland PD) training on was the Electra Glide back in 92. But even when I went to the Big Wing, I just applied the same principles.
Man I love it when riders practice...Excellent Drills and beautiful bike.
Appreciate the shout out my brother.
Rich!!!! Always sir! Love your vids l! I 10 around the dome is a real test for sure !!!!!!
All good tips. I watch Jerry Paladino, I'm going to give Robert Simmons a try. I practice about once a month, I'd give myself about a 5 lol. I get those days when my riding feels off. I can usually tell from the short time it takes me to get from my driveway to the corner. Great video!
Awesome comments Nick! Thanks for the support !
U turns to the right is where I need the most practice. Dropped my bike twice that way but not the left. Great job AB.
Thanks Larry!
I've been riding my whole life, that's a tough turn so don't feel bad, you'll get it.
Years ago when i got my first bagger it was intimidating for a few weeks but came easily. After a major accident a few years back(texting driver) i went back to mid size. With my back n leg im just not comfortable supporting a 800+ pound bike. A few stoplights and im in pain. On a brighter note it made me appreciate my midsize bikes more. You hit it spot on tho. Empty lot practice and backroads is what helped me
Glad you came out ok! Mid size bikes are awesome!!!! Thanks Barry!
Yea 7 years ago now. Im most comfy on a dyna, sportster, softail now. Easier for my leg to hold up. On the flipside i can say i now know how to do a cross country on an outfitted sporty 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sorry to hear about your accident. Every day I hate cell phones more and more.
Great Video ABUSA! a great reminder to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Even the most proficient need it! As a matter of fact, That's how they got proficient and practice is what keeps them proficient! I am off to find a parking lot!
Sounds good to me !
AB!! Get it kid!!.. its amazing how alittle practice goes a long way!!
There are times when I'm not "feel" on top of my game..Those days I will do some u turns and figure 8 to get "warm"
Idk I would rate myself like a 6/10
6 is strong! Thanks for watching sir!
Thats why I never even test rode a bagger/full dresser, cause that intimidating size... Good stuff man
You could ride one for sure !
@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA actually its more of a mind game in my opinion... Same with my GS being so tall yad yada... Once I got on it that was it..Purchased!!
@@MRGS48 I love the GS. Such a fun bike and so capable. Really love those!
@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA for what its worth I believe its worth owning at some point in life. Its the Caddy of adv motorcycles!!
Hey Anon! I was watching some videos from Jerry and this came up as recommended. Great topic. I am a zero right now but intend to change that! Bagger or not, practice in slow manoeuvres is never a bad thing!
dad ! thanks for checking it out brother !
Awesome video! A good rider is safe, it's not about showing off. And I don't care how much experience you have, learn your bike.
Totally agree Dean!
Excellent video ABUSA! Way back in the early 2000 years, I rode a Road King. Did not have YT back then and did not even give any thought to practice. Times have changed in regards to safety and being a proficient rider. Even though I don't ride a bagger any more, practicing those skills on any size bike is good advice. Thank you for this video! Ride and stay safe where ever you may be riding, ABUSA!
Road king 😍. Practice can be fun too! Good challenges! Thanks Jd !
I try to dip into a parking lot for a few minutes before each ride. I'll just do 5 to 10 minutes practicing a handful of drills.
It has helped me a lot but I've got a long way to go before I'd consider myself proficient at slow speed manuvers
hey Walt! thanks for stopping by!
Had never rode a bagger till I took that streetglide out mate.. all the worries went after about 3 miles 😄... still love that bike. 👍 good stuff, enjoyed watching 👌
Martin! Thanks bud! Street glide is a sweet machine for sure!!!! Be well sir!
Took my Voyager up Pikes peak. A big bike works just like a small bike, don't let the size scare you.
yup
Yep, it all starts in the parking lot.. Practice practice practice those slow speed manuvers is the way to master any size 2 wheeled vehicle
100 percent agree sir! Thanks for watching!
If you don't ride 1000% defensively you shouldn't be riding. Ride safe watching every other driver and anticipate everything...........
Well said !
Love doing figure 8 in 4 parking spots! No one practice enough is my opinion
Outstanding!
If I feel sluggish riding I just ride through it, I have taken an advanced course given by 2 motor officers, learned so much. got a HD riding academy course close to me I practice on. You know by Zephyr field.....
That’s awesome! Advanced courses are so great! I sure do know the one! 😁
Yup! Slow riding, up hill sucks on a big bike. I learned to ride a bike on an 07 vulcan 2000, big heavy kinda clumsy bike! Still ride it, love it!
Lol. True story! Well said! 😎
I practice, but my biggest fear is practice is the place where you should allow yourself to make mistakes, unfortunately I don't want to make the mistake of dropping my 900 lb bike...when I practice, it's like I'm "on". I do the maneuvers you show, but I'm very cautious. Unlike practicing the guitar, where I learn from my mistakes, there is no room for error or mistakes with a $18,000 bike, even in practice, that's why I approach practice on a big bagger bike much differently than I approach practice on other skills.
wrap the crash bars in padding and you won't worry about a drop
Yep, they are heavy. You really need to practice those slow speed manoeuvres, as well as emergency braking so you know how long it takes you to stop.
Another good point. Emergency braking! Thanks Viper !
I’ve been watching that same guy on RUclips recently, that is a mean looking machine mate
Thank you sir !
Thank you Anon. This vid very helpful. I am in the market for a tourer and honestly, was bit scared of the size and the seating positions. My experience is only with 1K cc super sports. Yes, practice practice and more practice. Thanks again Anon
Very welcome. It’s a big bike but with proper technique and practice, you can master it for sure !
@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA AB, hope to get some advice from you on the voyager. A few vids I watched on Voyager review complained about riding through curves and loops. Seems like you cannot lean much to turn since the bottom is too low and scratch the ground. What is your experience? Slow down, trail break and turn on low gear? I am split between an used K1600GTL and Voyager. I appreciate your feedback.
@@zakharmidicheov1681 well these big baggers certainly cannot carve corners like you’re used to on the sport bikes. Definitely gotta slow down coming into the turn for sure and trail brake. I don’t know any big baggers that can be tossed around that much as far as lean angle. The BMW may have some more nimbleness than the big Kawi, but they handle SO different from what you’re used to. You can “throw” them around to a certain degree but nothing like a sport bike at all.
@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA Thanks a lot for your advice. It is better to hear from those who really owns multiple bikes than some of the YT review vids. Have a great day.
@@zakharmidicheov1681 i also have a sport bike so I understand where you are coming from 👍🏼
Great video AB!
Thanks MB !
Great video! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
i watch them both, theyknow there stuff and more
Sure do !
Nice job mate, great advice.
Gracias good sir !
Great video buddy! And I’m not just saying that because if the mention. You know I don’t blow smoke. 😁 Thanks for that by the way!
Preload!!! And Keep It Loaded!!!! 👍🏾
Love your principals sir! Thank you for checking mine out! Major compliment from the preload preacher himself 🙏🏽😎
@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA of course! You know I’m subscribed and the bell is clicked!!👍🏾
@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle much appreciated sir! 😎💪🏽
Weather permitting, I practice several times a week. 3-4 20 min sessions during the week. I just take my lunch break and hit a parking lot. Just to get out of my chair. Every Sat, I set up some cones for about 90 min. Every Sunday I get with a group for about 4 hours at a time. I consider my slow speed skills pretty good and there are still off days.
That’s some awesome commitment! Excellent!
Sweet ride! Lmao, I feel you. Im looking for a stratoliner, and new to big bikes. Im trying to find one thats a straight line path, with no interstate back home!😁
hope you find one! Yamaha makes a good one too!
Love your bike ! I have the 2020 but the 19 paint job is better Dallas cowboys color ! Love those mods you have done as well!
Thanks Don!
My most difficult slow manuever is doing the speed limit.
Hmmmmmmm. I think I understand! 😎
Excellent vid! The hardest exercises for me is right and left turns from a stop, the iron cross, snowman, & circles. I do not like being on a hill either. 😬
you will get it as you practice!
@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA Yep, I definitely need to practice more than I do. Thank you! 😊
@@karenshoucairmcgray4902 just take your time and learn one skill at a time. 30 min and done. don't practice if you get tired, you will develop bad habits, do it while you are fresh so you feel good and confident each time. you WILL definitely get it in time, no doubt! thank you for watching and commenting and enjoying the video! much appreciated! ride safe!
@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA I always start out with the slow race. I love doing that one. Thanks again! 😊
@@karenshoucairmcgray4902 excellent starting drill!!!!! Slow cone weave is also excellent!
I ride it out mate but take extra care 😎🤙🏻
Makes sense Bert !
AB, great content! I'm working up in rider experience to confidently buy the Voyager, maybe next year.
Right hand turn from a stop and right U turn are more challenging for me because of wrist angle/throttle control. Will definitely check out Richard's videos.
Yes the right hand turn is definitely more tricky for that exact reason!!!! Thanks for watching!
I’m buying a 2011 Vaquero…..I’m a beginner never even rode a bike in my life…I will be taking small steps
Motojitsu is great skills channel as well.
agree !
Great video ABUSA!
I don’t practice as much as I should...
I always say I’m going too..but...
I’d like to see someone do a two up video on slow maneuvers! Do you know of any??
Me and the wife and bike are 1300+ lbs
Annnd I’m only a little guy😂🤷🏼♂️
I get my legs in between our floor boards all the time at stops and it makes my heart jump every time
Ride like a pro with Jerry Palladino has 2 up videos with slow maneuvers. Very good ones ! My heart would jump in that situation too!!!!!! Ride safe Nick!

Come to find out it’s my passenger leaning and taken selfies all over🙄
I just found Jerry’s video👍🏻
Made her watch with me!
Keep up the great work 💪🏻
@@nickmoore996 nice !
Nice Iverson clip.......lol
Yes sir ! 😎
I’m a simple man, ABUSA posts, and I hit play 😜 ok now to watch
SALTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
good stuff...I have same bike 2018....it took some getting used to.....
Definitely takes getting used to for sure with the center of gravity! Awesome bike tho!
@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA ...have been on 3 long trips and pull a comfort Kamp mini mate ...pulls like nothing...I have 3 bikes the Kawi has 28k ...love it
@@patrickdavis7815 that’s phenomenal!
Hey AB, what kind of gas mileage do you get with the Voyager 1700? I enjoy your videos. Always to the point. Be well.
i never really tracked it so my best guess was in the 40s. I do recall riding very moderately one time and testing that and i was around 250 miles to that tank before fill up. But i didn't always ride moderately after that 😁 hope that helps but that's in my usage and experience thanks for watching!
@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA Thanks. That's about what I figured. 👍
@@richgrant5053 anytime
Still a light bike. My cousins fully outfitted street glide weighs 965lbs. Plus riders and gear.
And rides like ass
Don’t understand the “preloading” concept at all
I never use that much throttle it’s not necessary
And burning up your brakes as well
I’ve seen that guys videos
And your on a liquid cooled bike. Heat shouldn’t be a problem..another better thing than a Harley
thanks for sharing!
MC Rider is also a good channel
sure is !
Great video, thanks! I am planning to buy a VN 1700 Classic Tourer. I had a BMW R 1150rt which is also quite heavy. What do mean by preloaded? Best regards Marcel van Kesteren The Netherlands.
thank you! preload is a term used by an awesome motorcycle instructor check out his you tube called "be the boss of your motorcycle" he can explain preload meaning keep the throttle loaded prior to any maneuvering....
Thumbs up bro great video catch you later brother
👍🏼
I dropped my Electra glide due to using the front brake stopping. Since then I am afraid to ride my bike.what should I do?
go to a parking lot and practice the slow race
practice coming to a stop under 5 mph ONLY use your rear brake to come to a nice smooth stop don't ever use the front brake in that scenario
front brake is always going to make your bike pull and dive down to left at slow speed
practice friction zone, and rear brake and throttle control over and over
always use rear brake when coming to stop unless it's emergency stop, that's whole diff story etx practice builds confidence
Robert Simmons is awesome! In my opinion though, his videos are too long. Too much talking and too little actual riding instruction.
fair enough!
with the 10" windshield, do you get any helmet buffering? looking at getting rid of my stock windshield and getting shorter. i am 6'2" and have a 2012 voyager
Hey Scott. Personally I do not. However you have 2 inches on me in height. Not sure if that will be a difference maker. Wind vest makes a great product ! Love it !
👍
