Well design is not art. The way we see "art" today can literally be anything. See "Ready Made" art. a piece of hair can be "art". a banana taped to a wall can be "art". Arbitrary. Design is more defined. It has an objective to solve problems through communication. This is why design uses "both sides" of the brain. "Art" doesn't use the brain at all.

I agree with this but I tried to be more vague than defining art vs design since to me the lines are ever increasingly blurring as time goes on. There’s a lot of art in design, and design in art. So those two things can’t be clearly defined and separated in my mind, but it’s sure a good idea to recognize their separate purposes from an ideological standpoint- design as having a function and art not entirely having one etc.

      You: "design is not art"
Also you: "art today can literally be anything"

If art had no function it wouldn't have survived so long.

@guycampbell733 the way we see art now has only been around since the Cold War(See CIA Psyop, involving Pollock). Oops, you're right, art is so arbitrary that it can even be design.

My understanding of the definition of art is that it's something of aesthetic interest, and/or an expression of thought or feeling. Those things absolutely use the brain, art often requires a significant amount of reflective thought and creative thinking. Design on the other hand is problem solving, a number of decisions made to address a want or need.
One issue I have with defining art and design is how easy it is to get muddled between the two. Artistic expression and aesthetic may be part of the solution to the design problem. Then you have engineering, which is also functional problem solving, but more on the technical/scientific end without any consideration for aesthetics.
