I love every theories of this final scene, but my favourite will always be this one: Kevin did what he did to proof that his mother doesn't love him, but after seeing his mom is still visiting him after two years he feels confused. That's why he answers like that. He actually ISN'T sure why.
Nah he felt an instinctive anxiety that she was leaving him forever, because he was becoming an adult and his mom wouldn't have the responsibility to care for him. He felt that anxiety, and that's why he clinged to her as a last resort of a child. In the end, the mother is free from Kevin, and the name of the song that plays also gives u a hint of that.
"I used to think I knew. Now I am not so sure." He did it to torment her. That's why he let her live. Now that he is the one who is vulnerable, he feels lost.
After seeing the he whole movie I really feel horrible for Eva. Not only did Kevin leave her to suffer to most, but she now is seen as a bad person and horrible mom. None of those people even had a fraction of the Patience she had, they all would have given up Long Ago. Seeing her embrace her son who is a murder and the fact she stays close by him and didn’t disown or flee from him says a lot about what a good person she is.
I mean She was a horrible mom She never wanted him She thought there was something wrong with him from a young age and instead of taking him to a doctor to fix it she just saw it as him since he was really young knowingly wanting to make her suffer. All cuz of his blank stares, and different attitude around his father ya know the guy that didn't act like he was a monster. She threw him against a wall, broke his arm and on the drive gave an awkward apology where she talked about herself in the third person. None of this suprises me. She fucked up as a parent.

@@IMR95 Ezra Miller is the actor playing the role of Kevin. He turned out to be an actual freak. He's a groomer, he also assaulted many people, including burglary and all.
A lot of people have commented something similar, but in no way shape or form is Kevin feeling remorseful for the things he did. Kevin has now realized that for the first time in his life, he is no longer the king shark, and he is now going to be released into a place that will show him the upmost brutality.
