  • We have had our pigs for some time now. This is the first year where we have had pigs go out for sale as pork meat. In the last coupld of years we have had mostly pigletts and that is how we have been able to sustain our operation. But it appears that we need to have another way to market our port through direct sales in the fall.
We have really loved having our pigs have so much room to move around and get their walks in, but we really need to imporve our pig pen, for better seperation, and loading and offloading.
I hope you find the joys that we feel as farmers and the frusteration of dealing with angry sows.

I think I’ve probably mentioned it before but, grandma always said: Never name your food 😆

Animals. They never do what you want. You are right you need somewhere you can funnel them. If you can get hold of anymore of those scaffold poles you used to make your solar rigs you could fashion some kind of gate that you can have retract out of the pen on wheels with a lever to drop it into the ground. I have seen such systems used with sheep, though the steel isn’t as strong as that you need for strong, healthy adult hogs. But it’s all a learning process. If you manage to walk out without any injuries, well none serious then it’s a good day. 😎

I think Pete from just a few Acres Farm does it best. He Parks his livestock trailer just as you did, and uses it as a Feeding stall for about a week prior to taking them to the butcher that way they are used to going in and out every day. On the final day just close the trailer door behind them

Never run out of Diesel, your right when you say that they are there to produce and not as pets. Still a bit of income is always handy. Thanks for posting....

When backing up to a precision spot, carefully estimate the distance you still have to come back. In the truck, roll down your window and find a good target on the ground alongside the truck, stick your arm out the window and point to a spot that's the estimated distance away from your target, then with your arm held stationary back up until you're pointing at the target. You'll likely be close enough depending on how good you eyeball distances.

    Hi Ola,
My Grandpa had a white board 3x2’ handle on the short side, and a stout stick to guide them.
He always remained calm and could sort a boar from between the sows easier than anyone in the district.
Try it using a board each next time?
    Love the show♥️
