I think Barbie's biggest issue is that she doesn't have a job or a purpose like the other barbies. She's a stereotypical Barbie. She doesn't realize that she can choose to be whatever she wants to be.

@@GeorgiaDow I think it's the subtle difference in messaging, where "You can be a doctor, or a lawyer, or firefighter, or insert prestigious career of choice" where it's intended to inspire someone, instead puts this percieved pressure on them to achieve and be successful. As compared to like "You can be whatever you want" which seems closer to the idea of freedom.
That isn't to say that doctor, lawyer, firefighter barbies aren't important, it's that idea doesn't grow with child and are inadequate as they get older so they're not the end all of feminism that the those corporate dudes think they are.

I think America Ferrera’s character is pointing out how impossible the pressure is to think about these unspoken rules we put on ourselves as women all the time. And in real life, just sharing that stress with each other feels validating and liberating. I don’t think she meant to imply that Barbie isn’t a person, but saying that impossible pressure shouldn’t be so suffocating, for humans or dolls. Because dolls are who we want to play with and pretend to be.
I feel like that moment Barbie felt "unpretty" was kind of the most important turning point of the film. When she didn't feel as pretty as Barbie should, or as smart or accomplished, when she felt like she didn't live up to her own identity, that was the moment that she stopped being an idea of a person and became a person. What struck about what America Ferrera's character said about it being impossible being a woman, I see a parallel between the hopeless quest to "be a woman" and Barbie's sudden failure to be Barbie. And I think it also perfectly parallels Ken's attempt to "be a man." These are all crudely constructed identities built to live up to a social expectation. Something I learned a long time ago is that "being a man" is a false goal. There's no pot of gold at the end of that rainbow. The only worthwhile goal is to be a good person, to yourself, and to everyone else, as much as you can. That's where the reward is. All the gender expectations heaped on us, both regressive and progressive, are just false personas we're expected to live in. But we're not toys. We're not the idea. We're the thinker. We don't have to be Barbies or Kens, living our lives based on the label on the box.
That seemed like the point of the movie, which is why, as compelling as Ken is, this is absolutely Barbie's movie.

Love your choice ofpink attire for this. Greta Gerwig never disappoints. This movie does such a great job at deconstructing who Barbie is, as an individual and as a doll, and what she represents. By the end you really feel like she's gone from a mass produced entity to her own real person.

I knew/know a lot of models. Unfortunately the industry is brutal towards them, to the point that it ruined a few lives. No matter how stunning the person there was always someone critiquing the smallest perceived imperfection(s), and that was from the agencies they work for! Depression, eating disorders, anxiety, self loathing, self harm, etc were the hallmarks that I witnessed…. it was heartbreaking. We saw them as angels yet they only saw a monster in the mirror.
There has been a sub-group of people online that have been calling Robbie “mid tier”. I personally view it as deflecting their own insecurities… akin to getting a kick out of watching a success story crash.

Certainly comes across as a lot of projecting their own insecurities. Margot is very pretty (aesthetically pleasing) & she’s a fantastic producer. She’s SMART. I’ve watched interviews of her and she’s very Australian vibes and highly intelligent. She’s a business woman. Her producing Barbie and Bombshell made me respect her.

I would disagree with dismissing *all* people who don't see Margot Robbie as beautiful as "insecure." Are some of them insecure and projecting that insecurity? Almost certainly. Sure, It is also likely, given how people behave on the internet, that some of the people who call her "mid tier" are just trolling. However, most people likely aren't doing either of those.
Not everyone likes the same thing. Not everyone finds the same people attractive (whether sexually or platonically). These people could legitimately not see what everyone else does. Even between twins, there are differences. My twin sister and I share a lot of interests, however we also have a lot of differences. The biggest example would be in career choice. From high school, I knew I wanted to work in game development. I chose my colleges and spent my time oriented towards that goal. For my sister, it wasn't until her late 20s/early 30s that she decided she wanted to be a vet tech, at which point she did the same; chose a college with a degree program for veterinary technology and spent her time accomplishing that goal.
People are far more complicated than you two are giving them credit for.

When I saw the Barbie movie, I thought it was a perfect movie for you to react to, because it has a lot of examples of topics that you could talk about.
I loved all of the costume changes in this video.
One thing that many people have troubles with is that it is ok to enjoy something that you aren't good at. Or to do something that you aren't the best at.
I'm in a new job field in which I don't have a lot of experience. Many people on my team seem to know things that I don't, but that's ok. I'm learning. I keep needing to remember not to compare where I am know with them because we are at different times on our journey.
I am also not the best at all the games that I play with my friends. But, I can enjoy playing anyway.
Your wonderful thank you so much for making this video. When Margot Robbie's Barbie broke down and felt at her lowest low after she just lost her house, her friends and feeling she's not good enough for anything made me wanna give me the biggest hug. Gloria's speech is my favourite scene in the film and the scene all women needed. It certainly peerked Barbie up and Gloria feels like a mother to Barbie in lots of ways. Even as a male myself I've lived with plenty of strong women in my family, my mum, sister, granny, aunts, cousins and they are my rock. Barbie is certainly a step in the right direction for women in the film industry and society we need more movies like it. Thank you Greta and Margot for making this masterpiece!

I was literally just about to suggest you do one of these on the Barbie Movie so I'm stoked that you actually did. Can't wait for the inevitable Ken episode and I hope you'll also do one on Alan. He needs more love too.
I work in Costuming for theater and film and I have to say you nailed it on the head. I have not had a single fitting ever, without the Actor or Actress straight up give me a laundry list of apologies for this or that on their bodies. I've worked with A listers, people who are considered the most beautiful people in the world and they too have scars, moles, etc. that they feel horrible about. It really taught me bodies are bodies, even taking measurements taught me you really are built to perfect proportions of yourself, you might think you're lop sided, but no, you're really not. Even age and time, really does just add character to you. There's truly real beauty in flaws.
This movie made me cry like 4 times, I really ended up loving it.
And then some of your words here made me tear up a bit all over again lol!

Very nice video. My 17 year old foster care individual (male) told me yesterday “I see a pretty or attractive or sexy girl or whatever and I automatically assume she’s a ho and sleeping around a lot and a slut and like arrogant.” It blew my mind. I had to pause rather than say the gut reaction of are you freaking kidding me? Stop that, it’s cruel and incredibly judgmental and negative. I did however tell him that’s a limited way to look at people. We talked more about how there are women in his life who are supporting him. 2 case workers, myself, a manager. I said it’s just genetics. You can’t control your skin tone and don’t want to be judged for being biracial so why would you judge women in such a way. Then a further convo how some gorgeous people I know are very insecure. Some beautiful people I know are also the smartest and kindness people I know. And yes-he’s less than 2 months away from being 18 and wants to be talked to like an adult so I said ok, real, adult talk? He said yeah. I replied ok-you sound like an asshole and I don’t think you want to sound like a dick so you have to change your way of thinking.
Barbie was brilliant. Saw it twice. I was the ONLY film nerd (with a film degree) who clapped and laughed when Helen Mirren said note to the casting-don’t hire Margot Robbie because it broke the 4th wall so well. Barbie is a very self aware movie just like Enchanted is well aware it’s honoring and mocking Disney at the same time.

Maybe it is because of the bad influence from his peers or online contents, maybe he has bad experience with girls(got rejected, got bullied...etc)... That’s why I hate gossiping. It’s just judging other people by their looks, their actions or lack there of, their fashion choices, etc.
it’s never about THE person but rather about finding something to make fun of, to belittle their life to inflate others.

I figured the important point of the "I don't feel pretty" comment is that Barbie is still a Margot Robbie lookalike - but she looks so very human, especially with her eyes getting red with tears, and the strain in her voice, and as Gloria says, to be a human woman IS to have this pressure on you.

Georgia, I have a lot of respect for you, I have been going through your videos the past week or two and your is channel is an absolute goldmine of thought provoking content. Your education in the field of psychiatry is very clear in each and every one of your videos. You're very empathetic, I think you have a very thorough understanding of the human psyche regarding both its beauty and ugliness. I can tell that you are a very good therapist that all of your patients are very lucky to have, but obviously, we all have strengths and weaknesses, we can't be an expert of every field. Your weakness seems to be economics, while I can get behind the idea of encouraging employees to ask their employers to give them compensation that they deserve and need in order to support themselves and/or their loved ones. The idea of a state enforced "living wage" is not helpful, artificial interferences with the economy like that only cause money to lower in value, if every service is being paid more, then every service is made more expensive meaning that extra money granted by the new "Living wage" is no longer going to be enough to pay for necessities.
Thank you so much for the kind words and for sharing your views on economics and how to equalize the inequity in society atm. No matter where you stand we need to have discussions on it. = ))
Interesting thoughts. I think about in history when they used have a milkman deliver. They paid the dairy farmer for the milk, they paid for processing/bottling, they paid the man to deliver it (who in turn paid for his house and other bills...a living wage)...they owned and maintained the truck, they paid for gas and oil. And milk was 45 cents. MUCH more expensive now, while doing much less good for the economy.
Mmm, I'm interested in what you think of a basic income (work will add to it) and social welfare (education, public transportation, healthcare being freely accessible) which are financed by progressive taxes?

I read somewhere that Jennifer Lawrence, a world renowned actor, was told to lose weight by her director and she refused to jeopardise her health and self-esteem for the sake of the film, or rather, because her directer demanded it and stood up for women and men who are pressured to be a certain weight and I found that incredibly inspiring. I love her as Katniss and as a person.

So when people were flakey, unreliable or racist or mean...it didn't defeat me. As an adult, I'm NOT begging for relationships. In that, I now know my value. No settling. (Anymore = ) Yep. I saw the Barbie movie yesterday it was really good I can definitely relate to Barbie in a lot of ways similarly wise especially her juvenile like kind demeanor and her being kind and caring and loving is the real her and her real personality not a nefarious facade. As a gentle person myself in real life as a young adult you start to feel like some people will be freaked out by you being so kind and caring and loving towards them and other people and sometimes you can feel that you’re too much personality wise and that your kindness makes people pause like you being kind and caring and loving is scary and the falsehood that you are pretending to be nice and kind to do something nefarious to them and their feelings as people. When it’s the polar opposite the gentle kind caring and loving spirit is the real you inside and out. I’m working through this feeling currently and reminding myself that my gentle kind and loving caring nature and heart isn’t scary to others and you are coming with pure intentions and as the real you. I think a lot of people who are kind and gentle and genuine and that’s the real them are going through the same thing especially in a world that has become very dark and unkind.

Some of these points have a lot more to do with politics than psychology. Of course we should ask for the raise we deserve, but the character's absolutely right to say that it's seen as crass. And that's hardly something we can change with some psychology pep talk.

I think this scene is primarily important for both genders to just remind us that society has double standards for both of us, but those double standards don't define us.
Society needs to value assertiveness regardless of gender instead of being an aggressive asshole. Too many male bosses overcompensate.
Some women are assertive and get labeled as bitchy just because they are women in leadership positions.
Now there are women who will overcompensate by acting aggressive just like some of the male bosses. Either way, keep your ego in check. We all have our issues so treat other's with respect if you want to be respected. My job restructured how leadership communicates with others and it is much better.

There was a Social Experiments in the 2000s were 10 boys were kept together for a week without adult supervisor. Can you review that and say how things could have been taken or how one should react to this environment.
that was a wild set of experiments they did the same thing with girls you should see that one also
The thing is ive had a lot of issues with health since...always. which sucks...but one advantage is I've never been particulary competative. I did become a people pleaser and ive been lucky in my 30s to have an extremely supportive group of friends...and my family have always been aweome. So i have to be careful about where i put my energy. Even more so after i have kids. The end result is im tired a lot..and i do need my rest...but that is different from being apathetic or lazy. When im on a good day i catch glimpses of how unstoppable i can be at times...but that takes rest and when im like that i sinply dont have the energy for negativity or people's judgements. That energy is special to me and is reserved for special people.

After watching the Barbie episode of The Toys That Made Us on Netflix I understood a lot of the references.
I disagree, I think Margot Robbie was perfect for the role. Although we perceive her as pretty and perfect; that doesn’t mean she feels pretty all the time or feels good about herself

people think just because THEY believe someone is "beautiful" it means that someone also sees themselves the same way. unfortunately, that's not how it works. I know many people who I would call beautiful, but if I asked them about their self image, 9/10 they'd be more critical and cruel to themselves. People tell me I'm "beautiful" and I honestly wanna laugh at them because I fully believe I'm ugly as shit and I truthfully hate being told I'm "pretty" or "look good" because it just feels like they're lying to me.
