    Vaseline heavily coated cotton balls are great for starting fires. A tip i learned a long time ago and was told again when I USED to watch survivor back in the day.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska

      Hi Joyce, yes it is always this fast. Sometimes it is higher or lower and depends how quickly the snow and Ice melt is happening. We prefer early season because the water is much lower. Late season sometimes you can’t get to the island we like to fish from unless in a boat.

      Hi Damien! Yes, but patience always pays off right? It gets better! Those firelogs are pretty cool, even just to keep one in your car just for the hell of it or an emergency in the winter. Thanks for stopping in to say Hi. 😊

    Fantastic job with the video! I love that you're adding additional scenes to your videos and bringing the duration up to around a half hour. As it is, you still tease us with what it is you get to see and experience, so longer videos helps with the immersive feel of it all. Getting a sense of travel in the video with the footage while driving is always a fun experience, and it's great that you got to see a moose and get it on film! The river is just blissfully tranquil. I've watched the video through a few times now and could just stare at it for hours on end. I can easily see why you enjoy camping on the river's edge. The footage of Jim hiking through to his favorite fishing spot was fun to watch too with Ember bouncing gleefully along. The whole mechanics of salmon fishing is rather interesting for those who don't do it. I loved getting to see the food prep and will have to try that out. While the salmon I have is from the grocery store, I'll certainly be able to do the rest of it. I have my Great-Grandmothers cast iron skillet that I use practically every day and I think it'll work well for that too. The fire log was a really interesting thing. I've never seen those for sale, but see how they use the jet stove design, it would work wonders. I bet you could make them with hardwood and have them last longer (and burn hotter). Keep up the great work on your videos! I think you're doing an awesome job with them, and everyone sees it!

      When you pick up on all the details it makes us feel special and appreciated. When we were putting together our separate days Jim watched my footage and said, "You do realize it appears as though you sat around and ate all day?" I told him that's EXACTLY what I did and I even have a long boring time-lapse of the entire day to prove it. I'm happy he had a day on the river to himself. He goes back again and has better luck. it's a beautiful and peaceful spot. I never knew much about Jim's type of fishing either. My family had a King Salmon fishing charter in the summer, I thought I was a decent fisherwomen, then he showed me this "flip" crap where you have to get the hook in the mouth of the salmon. My initial reaction was "you're kidding me right?". It takes a huge amount of skill to read the water and get that damn hook in their mouth. With King Salmon they get irritated and slap at your hook, which is my kind of fishing. With Reds it's the only way to catch them in fresh water is with that flip method. It's time consuming but totally worth it when it comes to eating fresh salmon for dinner. This place is Jim's favorite spot. It's extremely peaceful and almost too quiet this year. For years it was somewhat of a secret spot for both of us. We would stand together and get our limit of three in less than an hour and then go back after midnight and catch three more each. Then it was discovered and it was shoulder to shoulder for awhile. We might take on combat fishing but it has been a slow run this summer. You should definitely give that recipe a try. It's my favorite way to enjoy salmon now. Before I was on this Lemon/Dill sauce kick. With those logs I think I'd consider keeping one on hand for emergency use. Thank you for supporting us Brian. I hope you have a lovely week. xoxo

    I was lucky to fish the Klutina River with some Alaska friends living in GlennAllen. We drove a couple of ATV from their place to a spot on the river that had a deeper slot channel.
    It was the end of the King season and the folks we were with apologized for the "slow fishing". Well, all three of us Oregon visitors caught nice ,powerful salmon in less than 2 hours!
    I have caught salmon on rivers in Oregon but Alaska fishing has always been amazing!! Thanks for the video and happy birthday!

    Grüßt Euch beiden 👍 Am Anfang musste ihr Mann den Wagen gründlich sauber waschen, wie der ja aussah. Jetzt sieht er ja wieder Landfein aus, aber ich glaube nicht mehr lange auf dieser langen Strecke und Reise 🤙👌💪 Ach ja, eine Frage habe ich doch noch, hattet ihr nicht bei so einen Wetter viel mit Mükenplagen zutun gehabt? Auf unsere Reisen in Sommer in Schweden, Finnland, Norwegen, hatten wir immer damit zu kämpfen fürchterlich 🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟 aber da mussten wir durch. Wir haben es immer durch standen 👍👌💪 Herzlichen Dank für das schöne Video von Euch beiden 🙏👍👌 grüsse von meiner Gattin Doris und Hans ❤❤ / Bayern/ Deutschland 🇩🇪 Ach ja , guten Appetit und lasst es euch recht gut schmecken. Sieht sehr lecker aus, der gegrillten Lachsfilet 😋

      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад +1

      Hallo Doris und Hans! Wir verwenden Insektenspray oder eine Thermazelle für die Mücken. Wir finden sie nicht ärgerlich, aber wir haben uns auch unser ganzes Leben lang mit ihnen befasst. Wussten Sie, dass wir die Mücke unseren Staatsvogel nennen? Je weiter wir nach Norden gehen, desto schlimmer sind die Mücken. Das Terrain von Alaska hat so viele Unterschiede. Ein Ort ist Sumpf, ein anderer ist Wüste, ein anderer ist Regenwald. wirklich ein erstaunlicher Zustand. Ich denke, wenn Sie sich eines unserer Videos auf dem Dalton Highway im vergangenen Sommer ansehen, haben wir über die Mücken gesprochen. Sie waren so schlecht, dass wir nicht aus dem Van steigen wollten. Als Jim letztes Jahr nach Nordkanada ging, schwärmten sie den Van aus und er hatte an einem Punkt über 100 Mücken 😂

    Can I help with removing the skin on the Salmon? Put the fillet skin side down on a hard cutting surface. On a bigger fillet, cut the meat down to the skin half way between head and tail. Turn the knife sideways against the skin fillet the meat off the skin, turn the fish around and repeat. On a smaller fillet you can start at the tail and work to the head, you just lose a little of the meat with the cut. Maybe you knew all this and I wasted my time typing it. Thanks for making these videos.

    Good video. It was a treat on Father’s Day. The good thing about this fishing season is no shoulder to shoulder bank fishermen because of the travel restrictions. You have the rivers to yourself. No tourist money though. Very sad😞. I Used to do a lot of salmon fishing on the Great Lakes, mostly Lake Michigan. Love smoked Coho and Chinook. 😋😋👍 I’ll bet those Colorado Reds would be good smoked.

      Hi Ann. I think the heating system is quiet. It makes a low whir sound and you can hear the cycles but I enjoy listening to it. It's almost a sound of "comfort" to me. Like, "if I can hear it I know it's running". Absolutely warm enough for our winters. Have you seen our winter videos? The heater in the van kept us warm overnight in the Walmart Parking lot, not plugged in, at -30 degrees, so yes, the Espar Heating system is amazing to us. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and thank you for watching!

      @@WingsandWheelsAlaska thanks! I just don’t like the propane heaters that sound like a jet flying through your cabin when the blower goes on - I can’t sleep with that much noise! 😱

    How do you find the size of the van? Many people go for the larger 170!

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад

      We find it perfect for us. We spent a lot of time debating the 170 and other options. A LOT of time. 😁. We can park it in any driveway or parking space. We gained a lot more in terms of convenience by losing 3ft of space. It means we get to sleep a little tighter and closer together but it also gives us clearance to take us into places the 170 can't go. After traveling with Van Trekking Lifestyle last summer in their Travato they could nearly every place we could, with a few exceptions such as down on the beach and back into a few gold mines, but overall they did a great job of keeping up because they were willing to push it as well 😁. I think that if someone is looking for a van that doesn't necessarily need to get super down and dirty then the 170 is great. I recently discovered a 170 that I LOVED and it's a green one named "Bruce Banner" from the couple We Roll With It on Instagram. I've never met them, just drool over pictures of their van and envy how darn cute they are together. But it's a 170 with a ton of aftermarket goodies and that baby can go ANYWHERE. Thanks for the question Rob, it's a good one.

    0:39. Have you guys almost hit a moose before? I had one run out in front of me on Sunday. Luckily the Revel has strong brakes and I stopped about a van length short of it. The thing was when we almost collided the moose looked at me as I’ve to say “what the F*** man!” 😁 She (no antlers on this cow) then gallivanted around a bit in front of me as if to show off and then finally crossed the road. That was the second moose I’ve almost hit.
    I’d imagine you have quite a lot of encounters up in Alaska.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад +2

      Yes we have. One of the trips we were in talkeetna (think we had it on video). The winters are terrible for moose up here because of the deep snow it pushes them toward the road. Glad you made it ok 😂. Stay safe out there!

    What type of bird was that that flew in front of the drone? Something else I was curious about Jim is using a rod salmon fishing. I have seen plenty of instances where they also use dip nets out in the current. Is that a different time of the year that they do that? Or does Jim just prefer using a rod? I was under the impression that salmon stopped eating when they were on the run up the rivers to lay eggs.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад +1

      Hi Terry, That was a seagull. There were a lot of eagles out there but they showed up blurry so we didn't add the clips of them. Dip netting on the Copper river is in season right now but is further south on the copper river. We don't really enjoy dip netting as much as fishing and yes you can catch a lot more fish that way but we find the good ole rod and reel fills the freezer just fine and is much more satisfying. You are correct they don't eat in fresh water so we use a technique called flossing. The line slides through the mouth till the hook catches. The only legal way to keep them is if you catch them in the mouth so technique is important. Happy Father's Day, we hope you are having a great day!

    The water seems to fast for fly fishing hope I'm wrong I'd like to see you catch one.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 года назад

      Hi Jose, The speed of the water actually helps with the technique for salmon fishing. Really you have to thread the salmon (line drags through its mouth). They don't eat in fresh water so threading allows you to legally catch them in the mouth.

      Wow, that is really nice of you to say. I think RUclips requires a certain amount of ego to even decide to begin the process, but it should never get in the way. Stay humble and kind. I'd rather stay a small channel and keep everything about us real, than explode into RUclips becoming our life and living around RUclips. We promised each other that would never happen. The second we stop having fun with this and the moment we start "creating" events or "making" stuff happen than it's time to step away. We want to share what we know and learn along the way and We really appreciate you stopping in with such kind words. Thank you

      Hope- I'm thinking your existence here on earth must be a sad one to sit behind a computer and spew hate with your finger tips. He doesn't want a clingy, co-dependant woman. It's 2020. If being alone makes us stronger, and we recognize that? That's called healthy.
      We spend 99% of our time together. He values his alone time too on his motorcycle trips. Does that make him selfish as well?
