mrzlcumrzlcu what makes you think these cars had 1400HP? There was no technology to measure beyond 1000/1100 back in the day, and if it had, the cars were all detuned to 650HP for the race or they wouldn't finish. In fact they didn't even last the 12 laps qualification at full power. Even with the immense restrictions in no engine development todays cars are like 10 seconds faster.

Saulo Silva Finally, a rare correct comment, when it comes to F1 power levels and speed!
I love these old cars too, but very often peoples imagination run completely wild when they're on nostalgia trips!
It's my impression that it really is common belief that the old turbo-cars all had 1200-1400 bhp (all the time), while in 89/90 when Senna and Prost had their biggest fights the 3.5L engines had 900+ (when in reality 650-700).
F1 is about agility and technical development through restrictions! (and has been like that for decades)

Michael I. Hansen only bmw and honda engines could produce 1200hp in qualifying but for race they changed the engines for cars with 650 -700 hp
