"Federal prosecutors in New York subpoenaed the company of President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner late Wednesday over their use of the EB-5 federal visa program. The program issues green cards to immigrants who invest $500,000 in U.S.-based developments, 85 percent of which are Chinese.
The irony of the subpoena is difficult to ignore. The Kushner family company is in trouble for essentially selling green cards at the same time the Trump administration is pushing a plan to curtail the number of green cards issued each year. The new immigration policy President Trump rolled out Wednesday would crack down on legal immigration in favor of English-speaking, “high-skilled” workers. EB-5 applicants do not have a way of proving their level of “skill,” beyond the ability to finance projects for U.S. developers.”*

I make an uper-middle class wage and have been approved for a loan of 300k. I have been looking for a house for a year and a half. I have made 13 offers and have been outbid ever time. I can't even afford a 1 bedroom condo in my area. I'm looking 45 min north of seattle. Rent for a studio here is almost 2k a month. I'm not even looking in a major city. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would have access to over a quarter of a million dollars but could not find a place to live.

We in Canada are having similar problem with Chinese "investors" buying up property in Vancouver and Toronto and pricing out locals from real estate

My husband and I lost out on two houses when we're looking to buy because of Chinese investors having cash up front. This is land and homes that could house American families that really CAN'T be bought or sold ever again, being held by people who have no intention of ever living here. So the houses sit empty and the land unused. It's sickening. Just another thing to add to the pile of problems burning on the coal fire that is America right now.

This is a big problem that has been going on for years....wen I lost my house after owning it for almost 20years in 2013, after been fighting w bofamerica to save it; a "3 letter" named co. (I'm sure it was a Ghost name) bought my house while being in Foreclosure. Bought it at the value that bofa appraised it, and remodeled it within 20 days. Turned around and sold it within the month for almost 3 times what the foreclosure was!! Now, that's SAD for America to allow this to happen!!

Thank you for mentioning the effect of Kushner selling visas for profit. Can you look at what the impact would be to the housing market and strategic properties of interest if the elderly lose ACA coverage, that allows them to stay in their homes and receive care. There is a stench of greed from the other side that wants to snatch homes from the elderly at a fraction of the cost.

I used to live with my parents(rented council house) in Brentwood a town 20 miles east of London my wages were £25000per annum I had to leave and move 20 miles further out to be able to get a property of my own l could afford.
The UK housing market is amongst the dearest in the world the average for the whole country not just cities is now £206,000
That for new home buyers on £20,000 gross or less a year is a mountain they can't climb.
London is just a joke with tiny basement three room apartments in the right areas can go for £450,000 upwards.

Tonnes of foreign investors have caused prices to skyrocket to astronomical prices...plenty of people seeking property a thousand kilometres west in the desert or the top end of Australia.

It's a tough one but we need to do something about all those homes bought as just investments, 10-20% of all flats is simply empty while people have nowhere to live, we need a resource based economy with an exponentially increasing tax i.e. a tax that doubles for every new home you own .. 1,2,4,8 etc..

Yes but the EB5 program only works in TEA (Target employment areas). Meaning that you can only build a project such as a hotel if it's in an area of high unemployment. It's suppose to help generate jobs. You can't do this anywhere.

Here in Melbourne, there are entire apartment blocks that almost completely EMPTY. Not just a couple of dozen, high rises of 40 storeys.
And then what happens is they become a target for a different sort of crime. Something considerably less capitalist. Then they swiftly bring down property values in the neighbouring areas. Then property speculators can bag more bargains and the cycle continues. Then the government give grants to property developers to build on green belts and precious habitat just to try to kick the economy back into life/ease the homelessness. There's a special area of hell for the individuals/organisations that profit from this game.
