Khayal and Bandish by Shri Kedar Bodas in Raga Gauri. This was part of a Concert at Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre, Mumbai on 22nd Feb 2015.

What is the difference between Gauri and purya?

Gauri has komal dhaivat but Pooriya has shuddha Dhaivat. Pooriya doesn't have pancham but gauri has pancham. Gauri has importance of mandra nishad and has a peculiar focus on mandra nishad. But Pooriya has focus on both gandhar, nishad and teevra madhyam. Gauri is based on Raag Poorvi but Pooriya is based on completely different chalan. Pooriya is completely vakra in its chalan. Gauri isn't vakra but the methodology of pronouncing swaras, called 'swarlagav' is very peculiar in gauri and without this proper intonation, this rare Raag can't be sung correctly.
