  • Learn from my failures
fig tree winter storage failures. Sadly, I recently lost a bunch of fig trees due to my failure to heat my winter storage.
Here I am doing scratch tests and testing the viability of the roots.
A trunk can be dead while at the same time the roots can still be viable. Do this simple test to learn if roots are still healthy.

Ugh thats horrible, so sorry to hear that. 😟Hopefully, some of them are still alive. What were your lowest winter temperatures?

That was part of my failure. I didn’t measure temp.

I’m the type to never count a tree out though, so I have them in my den checking for any growth from the roots.

Same Here! I have fig pops almost a year old. But still green so will keep them till they root or rot.

    Wow! Tough break😢
I over wintered in an unheated garage here in zone 5.
Looks like I will take some losses. Some are waking up, some were probably too young to be out there and some took a hit after I moved them outside and didn’t shuffle them back in on cold nights.

Yeah it sucks but I seriously didn't loose more than a couple varieties. But lost a bunch of trees.
