the girlysound demos are literally some of the best and most raw music ive ever heard
One of the best demos I've ever heard. This version really grabs you and has a more "lonely" feel to it than the album version, which is what the song is all about.
makes me cry...
This is the absolute best fucking version of that great song. Way truer feel than the "real" version. The production seems more honest to what she's trying to put across. Thanks for posting this gem. Peace.
I have to go with the live version when I saw her do all of Exile at the 9:30 club in DC...it was REALLY good.
Thanks for putting the tapes up here.
I've been looking for this version for years
[Verse 1]
I woke up alarmed
I didn't know where I was at first
Just that I woke up in your arms
And almost immediately I felt sorry
Cause I didn't think this would happen again
No matter what I could do or say
Just that I didn't think this would happen again
With or without my best intentions
[Pre-Chorus]
And what ever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy who tries to win you over
And what ever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy who makes love cause he's in it
[Chorus]
And I want a boyfriend
I want a boyfriend
I want all that stupid old shit
Like letters and sodas
Letters and sodas
[Verse 2]
You got up out of bed
You said you had a lot of work to do
But I heard the rest in your head
And almost immediately I felt sorry
Cause I didn't think this would happen again
No matter what I could do or say
Just that I didn't think this would happen again
With or without my best intentions
[Chorus]
And I want a boyfriend
I want a boyfriend
I want all that stupid old shit
Like letters and sodas
Letters and sodas
[Bridge]
I can feel it in my bones
I'm gonna spend another year alone
It's fuck and run, fuck and run
Even when I was seventeen
Fuck and run, fuck and run
Even when I was twelve
[Verse 3]
You almost felt bad
You said that I should call you up
But I knew much better than that
And almost immediately I felt sorry
Cause I didn't think this would happen again
No matter what I could do or say
Just that I didn't think this would happen again
With or without my best intentions
[Bridge]
I can feel it in my bones
I'm gonna spend my whole life alone
It's fuck and run, fuck and run
Even when I was seventeen
Fuck and run, fuck and run
Even when I was twelve
My favorite Liz Phair song. Either version.
Perfect song.
Never heard this before... Cool, I have a new Album to explore.
gorgeous and gritty!
thank you, i'd never heard this before
excellent!
Letters and Sodas
I prefer this to why can't I¿
She tells it like it is.
The song takes an entirely different vibe when it's stripped down and sang I think in what I think is a lower key and another verse?
“Even when I was twelve”
I could be a real fan of this Liz Phair, but I really don't like the more produced, new stuff. This is so raw.
It's not her fault.
I kinda wish that after this tour Liz never again plays any of it live. The songs are more relevant now than they were 25yrs ago. It would only serve to trivialize her achivement if the songs were merely trotted out to appease her audience.
Great chords
I like this version much more than the Exile version... it needs that last verse about the girlfriend. (otherwise its kind of hypocritical)
yeah it makes much more sense now
suckLmydick
Whaaat!!?
The Exile version doesn't have that verse? That's shitty. I coulda swore I remember it having it...:p
anyone know what equipment she used to record this i.e what type of guitar and what type of recording device? even tho it's lofi it sounds beautiful now
Actually, it was recorded at Idful Music in Wicker Park, IL by Brad Wood. www.BradWoodMusic.com Brad is in L.A. for the past 16-18 years now. Idful closed after he moved to L.A.
Brad was my college roommate and bandmate in high school and college.
Apparently I'm in the minority for preferring the Exile version... vocals are too quiet in the mix here and sounds like she's singing too low for her range, and the rhythm section adds so much. For those who equate low sound quality with authenticity, you should check out wax recordings!

I think both versions are good. The Exile version is the first one I'd heard. So...:)
But the guitar part here is gorgeous. I love it more than Exile's.
Yeah, Exile is kinda better in the way she sang so bright and cool, contrast w the horrible horrible shit she's in in the lyrics. I think that's a nice move.
I'm with you, I do like the Exile version better as well.
I like both versions and this one is the first I've heard.
Love this...so raw! But I'm definitely partial to the Exile version...the key she played this in for Exile seems sadder...more poignant. This version, while beautifully unpolished, feels more like a disappointed, but upbeat, recollection. The Exile version, on the other hand, drips with the painful immediacy of having JUST realized you've been used.
Sweaters and comfort...;)
The cover art?
Generally speaking, I like demos better than studio versions, but maybe that only applies to punk...
cars chord changes ... hilarious
? what u mean?
She changed the words to a cars song.
thomas h Which song?
I don't think it's the cars, it is "another Planet" by a band I can't think of right now
the only ones. And the Replacements do a great cover as well.
Since I was 12, I was told I'd never be good enough, sexually...;)
