I was waiting for the reaction to Bianca Lawson's accent after the praise of her acting. The story behind that states in DVD Commentaries that the show's crew decided last minute to give Kendra an accent and Bianca Lawson's accent coach was so into it that he studied remote regions of Jamaica and the Caribbean. When the crew heard the accent they had to tell her they were worried people wouldn't understand it, so it became what we now hear in the episode. The crew was going to scrap the accent after hearing what it became after that, but the accent coach fought for it saying Bianca Lawson had worked hard on the original accent and on what she had to do on toning it down. Drusilla has a mystical illness. That information is only given in DVD Commentaries and never directly stated in the series. So much for waiting for the exposition to explain in next week's episode about Kendra. The cat seems out of the bag on that one. The DVD Commentary also states that originally this was to be one episode, but there was too much story, so they expanded it into two episodes.
"When they heard the accent they had to tell her they worried people wouldn't understand it and it became what we now hear in the episode. The crew was going to scrap the accent after hearing what it became after that, but the accent coach fought for it saying Bianca Lawson had worked hard on the original accent and on what she had to do on toning it down." Now that speaks volumes. LOL
@@MarkWardReacts I know the comment wasn't directed at me but I think it is probably the only good thing about it, but also shows that she did work on it hard (bad or not). Spike on the other hand just gets so inconsistent (from good to mediocre to bad and back again) that I just considered it part of his in-universe character development and therefore the way he speaks.
If you mean more constantly crap, then yeah. But see you know I take no issue with JMs especially when you find out later down the line why he has this accent.
I love your dynamic! You guys are just fun to watch, keep including the pre-reaction stuff and having a laugh. Hope all three of you stay with the reactions until the end of series 7.
"What's My Line?" is also the name of a show we had in the US in the 50s and 60s. It's basically a panel of four celebrities asking yes-or-no questions to guests and trying to figure out what line of work they're in. Sometimes the panelists are blindfolded if the guest is a celebrity him/herself.
So glad you got this to work! I was here earlier when it wasn’t able to be seen. You guys are wonderful love this content- I think they worked in the ice skating because Sarah Michelle Gellar was really into it for a long time. Wanted to be pro as a kid.
I don't know if this was "Learn French with Mark Ward Reactions", "Mark Ward Reactions, The Musical" or "Top 10 Shocking & Horrifying Accents by Mark Ward Reactions" :P All I know is I was gonna congratulate Sebastian on how well he's been restraining himself from doing spoilers...... and then he just drops a huge one!!! Great reaction, guys, thank youuuu!!! :D
I don’t think you should have confirmed who and how she was. That’s supposed to be the big cliffhanger. Is she lying? Is she insane? Just trying to throw Buffy off? All these possibilities are blown out of the water now. Just try to remember that for the future. As others have said, the accent was added quite late in the game. And Spike was originally supposed to have a Texas accent. One thing to remember, TV in America, at least back then, was produced on a lightning and often shoestring schedule. They don’t have the time or money to find the perfect actor like movies do. They still do an amazing job in Buffy, with one horrific exception (in my opinion) you won’t see til a long time from now. Even the minor characters I find really well cast
Sebastian Hjalmarsson-Clark It’s ok, your friend wouldn’t get to experience Buffy at all if you hadn’t recommended it, and we wouldn’t be able to enjoy these reactions, so you are a hero. None of us are perfect but I just think it’s especially important to be careful around any of the big reveal moments of the show. Think about each show’s ending for a moment as it does, what it’s actually shown vs. what you know happens in the next episode. I want to thank all three of you for these Buffy posts.
Fun fact : Bianca Jasmine (Kendra actress) is actually step-sister of Beyoncé 😉 and she was born in Los Angeles but yeah that's definitely a terrible Jamaican accent lol. Part 2 is much much better by the way, can't wait for your reaction 👍
You guys are watching the HD remaster. It's shitty, said even by the writers. There's a whole campaign to remaster it properly and not by computers. You should watch the original version! In this one you'll see plenty of mistakes on the sides of the screen because it's not supposed to be widescreen, among many other errors! For more on this I recommend the video "the great tragedy of the buffy hd remaster". And that channel for more analysis on everything Buffy
Kevin Hagen really? It used to stream the remaster. A quick way to see it is if it's wide screen, the whole show is thought for 4:3 ratio. Although the dvd versión is wide screen without the HD. The HD makes the skins look plastic!
A really enjoyable episode, assuming you can get past Bianca Lawson's "brilliant" accent. Creepy Bug Guy is suitably creepy...and full of bugs. Also, hello Willie the Snitch.
Should we chat? Me: Yes. Alexa: Not so fast. And once again proof of the significant other stuck in the middle when on tv they often foolishly assume it's friends. Missed the musical reference though, I'll happily look (her?) up if you write it out. @4:47 LOL!!! Tell me it ends the same way. Spike and Dru are indeed wonderful. This show creates so many memorable characters. @10:27 perfect scream for Halloween muahahahahaha! I'll show myself out. Oh yeah when Bianca came out I desperately wanted those pants. Little bit into fashion. I can't imagine Boreanez and Geller kissing with those vampire mouth things. @13:53 for some reason this makes me curious how you would react to horror. You guys are highly intuitive. Not sure if I've mentioned that. I've noticed the accent issue only two others places. Anime and a dub company that does English but can't speak it well-that one is always entertaining. Don't recall the name but they dubbed an Israeli TV series called Split.
Barbara Baker Des’ree... she actually featured in the Baz Luhrmann version of Romeo and Juliet, singing at the party... and successfully sued Beyoncé for using one of her songs without permission. 😂
I never worried about the accuracy of accents on the show. It was enough for me that the accent be different. And for vampires, if you've lived 100s of years and wandered the world, you are likely to pick up things from different regions and decades/centuries... I think you guys would enjoy the show even more if you just got over the accents thing. It's like commenting incessantly on someone's clothes, or shoes - while missing some of the dialog and plot developments that are subtle because you are obsessed with the dialects. Talking about it once and then moving on would be far preferable to prattling on about it in reaction after reaction. Just saying... :) I do realize this comment is almost 2 years too late to matter, though...
I would posit that everyone enjoys things for different reasons… I think you’ll probably notice that every time we comment on accents we are doing it with a smile on our faces - we are certainly not ‘enjoying it less’ for it. But we find it entertaining and that’s our view…Ashley loves a good discussion of the fashion choices… and that’s just fact 🤷🏻♂️
@@MarkWardReacts yeah, I might have noticed that about Ashley. :) And I realize you are having fun with it, but there have also been a few times that I think you missed some interesting/relevant bits while basically rehashing what you previously said. silverspike1 more consistent than Spike’s though right?

Yes! The episode I've been waiting for. Great reaction!!! This was a good setup for part 1 I thought.

I heard from some commenters they gave her a pretty obscure dialect if it to learn.
Drusilla was nearly killed by a mob in Prague - Giles' info said she had been slain, but apparently she was just damaged/weakened.
Awesome reaction as usual guys.
Is part two not going up until next week Mark ?

As a Jamaican it's a huge no on the accent. 🤣 It nah seh nutt'n! (It's not saying anything! Meaning it's no good.)

Kendra. with the worst accent to ever grace the series. "Accent genius" You just can't help yourself can you...lol
