In this video:
The man was an Australian by the name of Albert Ernest Clifford “Cliff” Young, who decided to take up running as a sport at the age of 57. The competition was the Westfield run, which is an ultra-marathon that takes place in Australia. The race is 543.7 miles long (875 km) and is run from Sydney to Melbourne. What’s even more impressive than a 61 year old potato and sheep farmer even being able to complete such a race in the allotted time is that, he not only won, but shattered the world record for that distance, beating it by over two days.

Sharing his cash winnings with other runners - Ultimate Gentleman
The Cliff Young shuffling running style was later analysed and found to be highly efficient.
Am an Aussie & I remember when he won this race. LoL Bastard! Gave my sadistic school sports teacher another reason to push us non-athletic types harder - "if a 61 yr old can do it..." 😐
FoXii ToXii lol how old were u:0
Я Ilan Zatonski I was 11yrs old at the time. Admittedly she didnt want us to do THAT marathon but made us do weekly mini marathons which she did also..in her car..behind us..keeping us moving forward by driving very close & honking the horn **shudders** - the stuff of nightmares 😨
hahahahahh
So she should have done it.
I remember watching the pre-race interview with this bloke. His style was noticeably slower than the other competitors, but it uses so little energy...no lifting his feet any higher than absolutely necessary, no springing off with the toe, etc...and while it won't win any sprints, it's always going to give the edge in a race where stamina is the primary resource. :-)
Our head teacher loved this guy and we had a room named after him in our school
Farmer - YAY, I won !!!.
Farmers Wife - Dear there's a storm coming, time to round up the sheep.
Farmer - OHHHhhhh...........
Honey, off for a run! Be back before dinner!
(It's Thursday) Should be back before Church!
farmers wife: when are we gonna end your virginity cliff?
Cliff : just let me do one more shuffle. Gotta use my gum boots.
farmers wife: Jesus fucking Christ Cliff, can't we just have some sex?
This comment section got weird real quick...
Cliff Young. Sex Life. Sheep.
I had a Master Sergeant that shuffle ran. No one could ever run longer and he could carry a conversation at any point without the slightest indication of being out of breath. I could beat him in a dead sprint, but probably only because he was pretty short and two decades my elder.
*AND NOW FOR ANOTHER BONUS FACT*
I remember this. It was awesome to watch Cliff (as he was known) each night on the news. It was great to see a humble Aussie being feature in a RUclips video. I didn't think anyone outside Australia knew of Cliff.
A teacher subbing for my math class told us about this and haven’t forgotten since, nice to see it’s not too unknown.
Grunkle Stalin It’s a very well known story.
Farmers were damn tough back in the day. Impressive.
They still are tough.
@@T9RX3 Depends. My grandfather lived to 102 years old and farmed his land with no machinery, just horse and plow. That man was tough as old boots. The guy that lives beside my family now farms too, but I don't think I have ever seen him without a tractor, ATV, truck, or backhoe doing the work for him, and he's fatter than his own pigs!
They ain’t farmin for the same reason, they want the luxury nowadays… Head to the city then!
@@arealfootballplayer8052 Well, we use the tools available to us now, and honestly I would prefer to farm the easy way with tractors and modern tools than live in a city and make the same money. The country is a much quieter, less expensive, more beautiful place to live.
He's a sheep farmer, AND a potato? I'm very impressed that he won.
Melody sheep rancher and potato farmer
The artist is a potato, French Fries are art. -will crow
Makes his win all the more impressive 🤣😂
Why are you impressed. Farmers work there ass off.
He was farming all that XP M8
Knyq Barbosa lol
lol, and maxed out his ST for sure.
And a Fifth bonus fact: When offered a ride by motorcar from the hospital to his home, mr Clifford politely declined, saying that it was a nice wheather for a brisk walk. Besides, he added, having suffered this hospital commitment he hadn't finished rounding up his imaginary sheep yet and so was frankly quite anxious to get them before the imaginary storm would hit. With that he was off, the sound of his rubber-johnnys fading in the distance.
This man is a low tier God, confirmed.
Person Human no
Lvl 999 farmer
How many re-specs, though?
level 999 farmer perk: gum boot magic for extreme endurance.
He’s over 9000
fuckin hilarious
A Lead Farmer.
Now that’s someone that doesn’t give up
Impressive! I can barely muster the energy to get up the stairs to the video editing room sometimes.
stairs are hard, you fight against the whole weight of your body! No more than 5 flights for me.
Mac Kobalt first.
It took me so much stamina to just scroll down to this comment section.
Thanks guys! I immediately felt 100x better about myself!
Remember him well, showed up a lot of professional runners up.
His real name was forest gump
Rob-karen Kennedy-parker funny but not true (just to be clear) 😀
I got the joke 😂
Dheeraj Bhaskar No shit.
Beech Forest Gump.
Anson D. Grimes
its a dang joke!!! it made me laugh.
sense of humor classes need to be taught in school.
Rest in peace Cliff aka Albert Ernest Clifford "Cliff" Young. Ultra Marathon winner at the age of 61!
Albert Ernest Clifford Young, Born 8/2/1922, Died 2/11/2003
It's really not surprising considering farmers do more work before lunch in one day, than i do all week. Maybe even all month... lol
Ben Masta Possibly even a year
Saying they have no training is false...They train all their lives just by working the farm.
Yeah, I read the title and was like 'NO DUH'. He's a farmer!!! Farm work is hard work...
Cliff Young: 61 year old virgin ultra marathon champ! A marathon runner who gets up early and never quits prematurely.
Truly he was an Arch-Warlock and used his powers to gain incredible endurance
He was a level 60 mage in WOW. He didn't run; he cast levitation spells and whistled.
I was in primary school when he won in 83. Everyone was glued to the TV watching Cliffy shuffling along. He was a VIRGIN until he won (maybe this helped his stamina lol) he grew up & lived in Beech Forest running up and down hills after the sheep. He was a very very fit man before taking up ruining a fact that his fellow competitors failed to really grasp. RIP Cliffy a true blue Aussie champion!! His shuffling style was soon adopted by marathon runners across the world.
The 61 year old virgin... Someone make this a movie.
Isaac Newton, the supergenius associated with falling apples and calculus, died a virgin at 84. It's rare, but some people just don't feel any need for sex - though in Newton's case, he may not have been able to stand the company of anyone else long enough to get any. Or they his, for that matter.
I remember this and him fondly........he was a lovely man and very inspirational
The most I have gone is 50 miles in 17.5 hours in the mountains of West Germany and 140 miles in four days in eastern Netherlands. I did swim 17 miles, as well. Everything seems so insignificant compared to this man. Especially since he was 40 years older! And then even older. I did live the life as a professional athlete as a career combat firefightrer/advanced trauma & cardiac paramedic (it's really the job of an athlete). My hat's off to him! Respect. May he rest in peace.
Wow this guy is amazing. Beat the record by two days lol.
He ran slowly but didn't sleep. The faster runners did. What is this? The rabbit and the turtle story?
877 km long in 5 days? 7.3 Kmh actually not that fast but hell a lot of endurance.
"And now for another bonus fact"
If you haven't met a Sheep Rancher before lemme tell you something, they Work hard and don't quit till a job is done well and right the first time, they get up early and stay up the whole day.
Laziness runs in fear at the sight of a Rancher and sluggishness hides it's ulgly face.
Respect is instantly given because it has long since been earned, if you know a rancher, thank them for the hard work they do day and night!
He's a bloody aussie ledgend!! Fun fact. His running style was nicknamed the gumboot shuffle because it developed from running in gum boots. If you lift your feet to high they fall off, hence the shuffle.
Fun fact, my father and his side of the family used to live down the road from him. And my mother and her side of the family used to live in Gellibrand, also somewhat near him. :)
Hearing that he found a wife at age 61 makes me feel a little bit better.
Ego Proxy well, but you saw what happened because of his wife then?
Tri-Shake-Atops For keeping it in perspective, cheers.
doesn't make me feel any better. who wants to run for five days to get a wife?
Not until you hear how she spent all his money and left him to die penniless, that bitch is still hated in Australia to this day.
Better start running 😆
SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK🔥🔥🔥
And sane
You should do a piece on Courtney Dauwalter who recently won the Moab 240, beating the second place man by 10 hours and a marathon in distance. She states her diet consists largely of nachos and beer.
farmers are know for their super strenght this is their proof.
It’s also raw strength they have instead of weight room strength.
My nanas cousin!
Such an inspiration to me always.
Miss you Cliffy
Cliffy jogged about 8 miles a day for fun, he was a lifelong vegetarian and teetotaler, and underweight all his life. He had no preconceptions about the run, no one told him the limitations of other runners so his head wasn't full of that nonsense.
We used to call it "The Cliff Young shuffle".
81 years? Good run for a great runner.
Love the channel Simon!
Really one of my youtube faves. 👍
Ok , this is one heck of a fact snack. 👍
Never heard this before now, yet I won’t soon forget it, neither! Made my day -wowww! Love 💕 this farmer, and his entire family!
Sweet video and the bonus facts were particularly interesting; thanks for the great vid yet again
that's 50 deg celsius in Sahara, -18 in Antarctica for us simpletons
Rather, for us intellectuals who are fluent in Celsius.
actually i'm guessing intellectuals would go for 323 and 255.
oooh bazinga, droppin' the Kelvins!
I remember him he was a unsung hero in our eyes ♥️♥️♥️
I'm 58 years old. Maybe I should get on with it.
Its never too late to enjoy life.
But are you a virgin? First, get laid. Only then, be the ultra marathon champ that you were born to be.
Believe it or not you are actually in the prime for distance running. Best distance runners in the world are in their 20s and 60’s😁
Francois Lacombe Go for it.
Take that! Even if I run that much I still will die, so might as well be semi lazy and live my life.
Lord Gronor I mean he did spend years training, there's always time to pick up something new
Cliffy boi!!! He lived a few towns over from me, never knew he was a sheep farmer just a potato man lol.
yeah, in Oz they often referred to him as a potato farmer... the sheep story is way more interesting
Darren Lucas agreed!! But as a native kiwi maybe I have a thing for heating about sheep 😹😹😹
lol
Wow, what an incredible guy!
Wow, what tough guy!
Bonus fact Buller ice cream come from Colac
Bonus fact. It's spelled Bulla.
Here in Utah as a young kid my family ran an aid station for the Wasatch 100 starting somewhere in Idaho and ending at Sundance ski resort in Utah. We were about 80 miles in. I saw countless people life flighted out and even a few pass. My brother helped land the helicopter and that’s what gave him the passion to help people. He is now a firefighter/paramedic.
I have never been so early before! And I am so glad to learn this.
it's all in your hands what the limitations will be, nice story
I remember him when i was a kid, everyone was out on the street when he went by, it was a big deal
This story just gave me new life goals! I better start training. :-)
Cliff Young what a legend.
So... He was basically a old forrest gump? Mad respect for that guy. I would never be able to beat that marathon.
virgin sheep farmer is an oxymoron
Marcelo Dezem guess that's why he chased his sheep for 3 days... they were playing hard to get.
Marcelo Dezem Oh Mein gott really? Think you where a West Country farmer.
Only if you're Welsh.
Cliff Young's main rival in these ultra marathons was a Greek guy called Yannis Kouros. I think that Kouros won once and Greek people in Melbourne went nuts chanting Kouros!
Yannis Kouros won a number of times( no one beat him and or even got close to him) and cliff was no rival to Yannis. Yannis Kouros was in a league of his own. Regarded as the best ultra marathon runner that has ever lived. In fact to highlight that statement, they had to start Yannis 12-24 hours after the main field started a couple of times because he was just too good. Yep he overtook the whole field and still won.
So he skilled all endurance all his live.
1:40 Rounding up sheep is not what they call it in Australia. There it's called "securing the Harem".
This is probably where they got that bit in Forrest Gump where he ran and ran and then he had enough.
Cliff doing the Cliffie shuffle!
My father ran in the 1991 Sydney to Melbourne, ending up running 870km, withdrew to Tendonitis. Cliff young had been running his entire life, he deserved the win.
Simon in pre-school, "Today I found Out, 2 is a Number."
Wow its so trippy hearing colac named droped in a video my familys farm is their i didn't grow up their thankfully but its such a tiny farming town only about 6 farms or so are their.
More running vids please :) 'The Cliff Young shuffle' is famous here among ultra runners
Its not surprising.
He’s from Australia.
Knowing the Native Flora and Fauna, running isn’t for fun, its a matter of survival.
Some fun facts about Australia.
1. Australia is the largest island nation in the world, straddling the border of the Pacific and Indian Ocean.
2. It has a rich and exotic ecosystem supporting fantastic flora and fauna...all of which were unfortunately eaten by the monsters that live there.
3. Its primary spoken language is screaming.
[Source: Cracked.com]
This sounds really good
The Sydney to Melbourne ultramarathon was hardcore. Most years, a lot of the participants didn't even finish.
So many bonus factssss
This is my favorite RUclips channel
Respect farmers, farming is one of the toughest occupations on the planet💯
End of the race was in Doncaster in the eastern suburbs... Not far from where i grew up and even closer to where i am now!
"no training".. except he trained for 4 years and before that had an entire life of physically intense work.
You might want to take a look at the 'Bad Water" race. It starts in July in Death Valley and goes to 14,505 FEET on mt. Whitney. not many of those invited to participate finish.
I literally just finished your video on JFK's sister and this is in my sub box.
Would have liked to have seen some pictures of the guy and of the event he won. That being said, thanks for the upload.
I easily believe that because my grandpa is a farmer and he has beat cancer twice, plus a stroke. His strength has always being amazing as well as his resistance but totally obvious because since he was young he has worked the fields, with long hard days. This doesn't happen as much but most old country people I know that has kept a good farm schedule have had strong bodies and incredible resistance, physically and mentally
genetics have a lot to do with it!
Marathon running is pure genetics. You wouldn't think it looking at them because they look weak and bony, but that's the ideal body type for it. There's lots of stories of people with basically zero competitve training smashing world records because they have perfect metabolism.
It's not purely genetic. Yes, genetics do play a role in how fast you can run and maintain your pace, however, without training or practice, no one, no matter how genetically gifted, would be smashing any world records. In order to even compete at a professional level, it takes an incredible amount of work and training no matter how genetically gifted you are. There's much more to it than they were just born that way.
Shaun Diebel you literally can be proven wrong by Google in twenty seconds. There are a shit ton of record breakers who where generally healthy but no experience in real competitions. Genetics are 70% of it easily.
Nero_Faintly you don't have to be in a "real competition" for it to be valuable experience. what matters is how much effort you put in and how consistently you do it. if you listen to this video, you hear that the guy did a lot of running in his life because they couldn't afford a horse or vehicle. A lot of long distance runners come from third world countries where they too can't afford a vehicle.
weak and bony? Have you seen Yiannis Kouros?
I ran for quite a while, lots of 24hr races and 3 6 day races. I wouldn't describe most of the people I ran against as weak and bony.
For most, it isn't a perfect metabolism, but putting in the work to run as efficiently as possible. William Sichel is an example of that. Yes, he is a smaller guy, but he is one of the most efficient runners I have ever witnessed, and that work has granted him several world records.
Limey Lassen while I think you are exaggerating a bit, genetic factors like metabolism and skeletal frame matter quite a bit.
Of course, compared to most land mammals, any adult human in decent shape would be a superior endurance runner. While many other animals are faster runners over short dustances, and others have greater resistance extremes of heat and cold, there are actually only a few that could travel 5 km race continually moving at more than a walking pace even in mild conditions. Also noteworthy, of the few mammals that are on average as good or better at endurance running, humans domesticated two of them equines and canines thousands of years ago.
Did Simon just call that guy a "61 year old potato"?
0:50 You forgot to mention that his "shuffle" has been adopted by some ultra-marathon runners.
This guy's a boss!!
As a nurses aid I walk about 5 to 6 miles in a eight hour shift. Actually have to consume more calories not to be under weight. Don't use the elevator run up and down stairs walking fast all damn day. Plus physically lift residents bigger than myself. 57 on no medication or rarely get sick. Never got covid. The healthiest thing is to keep moving stay busy. Also chilling out time is very important.
I remember the movie based on this guy. ‘Cliffy’? With thingo, that guy that’s in everything made in Australia...Colin something? There’s a c in his name somewhere
watched the movie 3 days ago, absolutely one of those good for the soul movies, beautiful, and it is a true story! aussies and brits in my opinion make the greatest movies!
Impressive, most impressive.
That whistle at 0:36
I love having lots of bonuses
People forget the fact that farmers have developed their body on much more stress environment due to their work like the man stated he run like 2 days just rounding sheep thats insanse
And I get out of breath when walking from my bed to the fridge
Give him a tactical visor and send him to fight the Omnics. Hes the hero we need!
“I’ll convert miles to kilometres (for basically everyone watching), but for no reason I’ll give temperature in Fahrenheit only.”
WTF
Gee how did you find ol Cliff. I remember all that well, he was a legend. I seen him run past once.
this man was a boss ass bitch. he could have ran from New York to Florida in just over 10 days. farmers are the backbone of America
Please state the temperature in Celsius as well as Fahrenheit
Amazing Cliff. How come these races are never covered by the sports Networks?
driving that far wears me out.
