Hi Diane My final comment is that we have MTDNA tests for our mother's mother's side and YDNA for our father's father's side. But what about my mother's fathers fathers side? How best to trace that? Surely only autosomal is available

Hi Diane I am confused how to use Family Finder at FTDNA. How do I actually link someone to my tree. I have one match which is a 3rd to 5th cousin. Does this mean we share 3rd, 4th or 5th great grandparents?

You only use the official linking feature when you know your relationship to someone else. As for identifying your relationship to a 3rd to 5th cousin, that can be done, but it takes practice. In general, a 3rd to fifth cousin will share your 2X great grandparents, or your 3X or 4X great grandparents with you. Try out this blog post to help you: www.yourdnaguide.com/ydgblog/dna-matches-generation-of-connection.

Hi Diane another question I have is that very shortly one of my close male relatives on my father's side is doing the big Y DNA700 test for me. My grandfather's birth certificate shows that his mothers husband was not his biological father, hence going backwards will the Y 700 test show matches on my real paternal side?

YES! Let's cross our fingers that you have some good matches. But with a relationship that close, you will ultimately want to turn to autosomal DNA to help you. I outline how to do that in my book www.yourDNAguide.com/thebook.

Will you be covering how to do this using 23andme? Do I have to download the "aggregate data" and use a spreadsheet filter?

Hey Howard, sorry I didn't see your question. You can look at the XDNA at 23andMe by going to the Advanced DNA Comparison option under the Family and Friends menu. Or, you could download the data and view it in a spreadsheet, as you suggested.

IMO you are far too important and fantastic a presenter. Google has never yet suggested I watch your feed. It’s a travesty. You deserve greater exposure from Google. Not sure but presenter replies to comments might help too. Anything short will do. Like: Thanks! OR See my website (or book) re your question. OR “Darn, wish I could answer viewer questions but personal responsibilities, client work and “life” precludes this presently. Few presenters respond to comments older than a month.
An aside, your example seen today re the weakness of dna evidence to confirm native american heritage re or family story was brilliantly clear. This is a paraphrase: You explained dna reflects just 1/2 the story of our parent’s inherited lineage. Its like being handed half a sheet of paper containing the genetic story they received. But darn! Every parental generation Hope you mention your RUclips Channel on every podcast and RUclips and every webinar you guest on or presentation you make. We need more of you, lots more! Mention your website and book too of course! No dna expert presents like you- everyone who sees you knows this. You present with enthusiasm, graphically simple enough so we understand. ASK viewers to click LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and CLICK the bell for notifications. Every viewer interaction informs Google you are worthy of more notice. All (well almost all) emerging high subscribers ASK for viewer comments at the end of their videos.
